Chapter 4

Many years passed since Grayback's funeral.

Kontoln took command of the village as the Drillmaster of Battle.
The Varn were doing well, making strategic strikes that Kontoln knew
they could handle, where the village he used for larger strikes.
Many things had changed, over these years, a young seamstress by
the name of Rachiel stole the heart of the Stoneback. Knowing that
he could never love, for it would be seen as weakness, Kontoln
decided to leave it as it was. Wearing her robe was the only sign
he ever showed to anyone, except Rachiel herself.

And so, the pride of the Stoneback won over love.
Love is cruel, even when you have a back, or heart of stone.

Perhaps this was for the best, as Kontoln gave in to his first love,
killing mages for the Lords of Battle.

Chapter 3

With the death of Grayback, the bull father of Kontoln Stoneback, new
responsibility fell upon Kontoln.

Kontoln watched as his father's funeral pyre burnt. Memories of his past
flooded his mind. The rough upbringing of a mercenary was exactly what he
needed to become what he was. Though it was far too late to thank him in
person, Kontoln gave a silent prayer in thanks to his father. The Varn
needed a leader now and they chose missions as Kontoln saw fit. His foresight
was a mercenary band that was wise, courageous, strong, and worked together
to better themselves for their own pride alone. As the flames started to die,
the seal of the Varn and the word "Varn" were tattooed onto Kontoln's right
arm. The ashes of the Grayback were used to make part of the ink for the
tattoo, as is custom for the long line of the Varn.

Kontoln addressed the Varn after the funeral.
"Varn! We are strong, courageous, wise, and filled with pride!
Though Grayback led you for many years, it is not over.
For we are the Varn! Death to our enemies! Loot for ourselves!"

Though the speech was simple, Stoneback began quickly changing the Varn. He
began by writing to a druid. "I am in need of carrier pigeons or some similar
bird. Wise enough to find myself or my men and deliver messages, however no
magic is to be used in training these birds. I can pay you handsomely in furs
or whatever else you might require. -Kontoln Stoneback, Leader of the Varn"

Chapter 2

Over the many years, Kontoln Stoneback had tried to make a name of himself.
He tried to be a great sharp-horned bull of War. While his minor goals had
changed over time, his major goal had stayed the same. "I will be the
strongest and to protect my pride." Being physically strong is not the only
thing he had in mind.

For many years, Kontoln Stoneback has pretended to be a simpleton mage
slayer, but he does have a spark of wisdom gained over his years. Kontoln
spent many years dumbing down his words so that others would understand. So
they would believe him daft or simple. Only the few Leaders of battle know
otherwise. As Kontoln's written word is normal as any human would write. It
is an act, to appear more dumb to lull an enemy into a false sense of
security. In addition to this, he believes it also adds to his presence as a
fierce minotaur warrior.

It is this presence that makes him believe he can lead the Hoard of the
Barbarians into battle. Rising up from a gritty mercenary to become the
Commander of Battle. For thisb Kontoln Stoneback needed a plan, as the
current Commander is a difficult foe. Were the rites to be called, it would
take all of the grit, strength, and wisdom Kontoln has to defeat the
Commander. But first, he intends to join the Commander's side as Drillmaster
until his rise to Commander. A carefully written letter given to the
commander will hopefully tip the Commander's favor in Kontoln's direction.

Chapter 1

Born in a dark ritual, half-man, half-beast, truly a believed to be an
abomination. The taint of his creation stains his soul. Kontoln knows little
of his birth beyond what all others know. His life came at the cost of
anothers life. The bull that bore Kontoln raised him in the mercenary group
called the "Varn". Kontoln took many years in learning the mercenary way.
They called him "Stoneback" not only for his grey, slate (or stone colored)
fur that covered his back, but also because he was betrayed by a member of
the Varn, struck from behind. Kontoln was hardly harmed by this strike,
tossing the member aside with his horns. The life of a mercenary is rough,
Kontoln strived to become better than his fellow Varn. When they could teach
him no more, he left the mercenaries, none dare stop him.

Thus, the young minotaur began to refine his form with a proper teacher. His
parries and footwork began to improve. This is where his love for the martial
arts began, Kontoln's pride swelled marveling at his own magnificence. This
is when Kontoln learned of the existance of magic. He was training his
strikes with a whirl of his flail, when someone unseen began to chant strange
words before him. The words compelled him to sleep. Dark curses were called
upon him and poison ran through his veins. Violent magics awoke Kontoln, yet
he stood his ground, striking his opponent making them flee from his powress.
It began so simply, the reason to destroy the mages. One forced to defend
himself. "How dare one strike me!" thought Kontoln in his rage. Kontoln could
not see this foe, nor take vengence for his hurt pride. This infuriated him
further. And he continued to despise those who cloaked themselves in this
magic. This trickery of the eyes.

Until the day when two mages struck Kontoln. A dark-knight was not hiding in
his vile magics, Kontoln struck swiftly. Then a second mage appeared from the
eye-tricking magics. Kontoln's eyes narrowed. As the first mage fled, Kontoln
was forced to fend off the second mage. With tactics in mind, the first mage
struck Kontoln from behind the other mage. Kontoln showed them his superior
strength of combat forcing the second to flee. With that, the dark knight
fell to his strength, as his flail struck a telling blow. Cowering at
Kontoln's display the other mage ran to Galadon to hide in his magic. Thus,
Kontoln began to hunt mages, not for a price like he once had, but for
damaging his pride as a warrior.
