Chapter 4

Standing over a small gravestone, Kuryaelin reflected upon the memories of
his profession and call that led him to the Isle.
Looking fondly upon the stone, Kury whispers to the stone. "Twenty long years
it has been, grandfather, and yet it seems
that it do be only yesterday since you helped me find this path. I took to
heart the mission in my mind to safeguard the land.
In the guild of the assassin's I learned the trade of the death-mete. I have
traveled much, seen much, and defended the lands of
Thera as ardently as I do be knowin' how. I have seen the mighty
magic-haters; fought their blades, fists, and songs. I have faced
an Emperor, the WarMaster, the Shadow, and their ilk. I have met the Paladins
and known pain and misery from the Advisor to the Chancellor. For the sake of
the Balance, and all the peace therein, I did face down the
Barbarian Drillmaster and that damnable minotaur Kontoln alone to return the
Key of our Isle to it's rightful place. Though they taunted me,
for the sake of the Balance, I stalked and slew Abiritha Drillmaster,
hutt-dweller and misguided sycophant of the village, with a single
blow that did be endin' her life. It was not for blood I fought, no for
glory. For the world, and those who live in the towns who
live quiet lives of peace and necessity I did strike and do. I have not
forgotten why I left the city life. It was not for the mere sake
of friendship but of a life full of passion for something much larger than
myself that I have joined the Seekers. I have seen them
fall in battle and live to serve the Balance. I have lost friends, and gained
them; we do be a brave lot who interpose ourselves as a
shield from such powers that would usurp others from livin' how they might.
Think well of me, grandfather, until I lay down my sword
and do be joinin' ye on the otherside. Whatever it may be."

Chapter 3

When Kury was able to finally look up, it was into the dead eyes of one of
what he assumed was the drunks. Shuddering at the scene beyond, Kury nearly
wretched his lunch. The three warriors looked to have been butchered, caught
off guard as they were. "You, boy, will never speak of this. You will not
even think of this, because if you do I will bury you. Our guild does not
tolerate those that make trouble for the guild, and having those accursed
Blood Tribunals meddling with our affairs over these corpses."
It was a scant few months later that Kury began working to be able to pay his
dues to join this shadowy guild which valued trickery, sublety, and cunning.
It was years later that Kury moved to Arkham to study in the east with the
assassins guildmaster. He woke early every day, straining against the trials
that the guildmaster set. Training his body, Kury worked to learn the weapons
and skills of the guild to be able to work so effectively against those
trained in the art of war. Learning to use the loud distractions of everyday
life, the shadows of the night, and impersonating those of other professions
to infiltrate into the lives of those Kury was practicing the trade on became
his life. Always thinking of his grandfather's wordsm, he puzzled away at the
way of the world. One day, he brought the question to the Guildmaster in
Arkham. "Master, I have often questioned what it is to be one of those
light-blinded paladins always protecting, always helping those in need. I
have also wondered what it is to be one of those blood-oathed or even that
lot that work to resurrect the dead for their own means. My grandfather told
me to puzzle out the meaning of the necessity of all these and I think I
have. When the light has the power, a presumed peace pervades the land for a
time. Then evil rises up in secret and overtakes the land. People suffer in
the land, and those goodly types are not strong enough to fight them off for
a long time. Without the constant struggle, a balance, the land is torn apart
by the ebb and flow of each being more powerful in turn. I think I finally
understand the puzzle. Both sides need to have overt bastions in the land to
draw out those who follow either side, and it is in our best interest to
determine how to keep those sides in check. With my trade, I am suited to the
task I think." The guildmaster shrugged. "I took this route because I was
born into it. It is in my blood to fight, and it is in my blood to use the
best tactics to do it. I could never stomach the charge, dueling, or the
insanity of hoping magic would sway the conflict. You decide what is best for
you." With that, the conversation was over. Deep down, Kury knew that his
conclusion was right. A knife in the dark to keep the balance, for all those
who made up the bulk of Thera.

Chapter 2

"Remember. Remember all that I have have said, and do something.
You must choose, and be cunning. All of the strengths of
a man is not measured in his strength in body or merely in strength of mind.
The idea that he is bound to will run his heart even after it would normally
stop. Now, bring me a cup of tea and let an old man lie."
Kuryaelin reached his next naming day remembering all that his grandfather
said. His mother worked for one of the seamstress shops in the city as he
worked as a small messenger boy oft used by the mayor's office and the
merchants in the city. Years passed and he remembered giving his word to his
grandfather to find a way to help the people of Thera. Seeing the members of
the guilds of galadon fight in the streets, once the young boy watched a well
known warrior fight in the arena outside the city. The warrior won more than
he lost in his youth, and as the fighter grew older Kuryaelin was impressed
with his prowess. As chance would have it, one day in the winter, Kuryaelin
was delivering a parcel to the shop where the mercenaries were hired when he
was passing through the square. The prominent warrior was in the market place
speaking with guildmates when a cry from the group went up. The warrior,
armed to the teeth, fell in the snow for no apparent cause. The cityguards
were summoned, and found nothing that pointed to the cause of his death. By
chance, the boy was passing an alleyway when he heard drunken mutters of a
pair of vagrants sitting in the cold snow. Hugging the north street corner,
he tried to listen in on the two. "...slighted the guild before the last
arena tournament. The guildmaster put a bounty on that fool warrior's head as
a lesson to any that would insult our members, " finished the nearest drunk.
The other chuckled and broke in "I spent the last four months studying in the
east with the Arkham guildmaster, and I think he takes insults about as
keenly as our local one has. A dangerous thing to open one's mouth about..in
fact, I..." the second drunk, who clearly wasn't, broke off and cocked his
head. Kury couldn't see what stopped them but was soon shoved into the small
alleyway as the three warriors standing next to the newly dead champion
charged past him and the two bum drunks. "Break that blasted door down!"
Cried one. "We'll shove these damn darts down whatever throats we can get our
hands on," Cried another. Facedown in the snow, all Kury knew was the sound
of a small commotion of something smacking a door and then the struggle of
several men locked in combat.

Chapter 1

"Kuryaelin, my only grandson, there is something I need for you to learn,"
said a worn man lying on what could only be perceived as his death bed.
Unfocused black eyes stared blankly across the room, belying the cunning of
the mind within. "You may only be a boy of five, but I have seen much in my
years of living in Thera. I chose Galadon to live in because it is a crux in
the cities. I have seen legends stalk these lands in the name of good and the
name of evil. I have known true terror in those whom tormented those living
in the cities in the name of chaos. I have seen those lovers of Battle, those
Ragers rip the hapless magi into pieces for the sake of cleansing the land of
the magics. When I was young, the light-blinded dogooders rallied behind the
Knights of Thera for the sake of their good ideals and I have seen the lawmen
known as Arbiters become this Blood Tribunal. I remember when the Scion of
darkness materialized when the Masters of Magic fell to pieces. In my youth I
even remember the most horrific Lich walk the land..Zorszaul was his
name..yes, Zorszaul. Long has the Empire aspired to more than they can
grasp..them with their laws and brutal discipline. When the barons of Chaos
collapsed and the Sylvan warders merged with the remnants of the Barons to
become Outlanders..them who are focused and effective in their battle against
civilization, my bones tell me they are all necessary. Your father, my son,
Heutyril was a brash fool but he was well suited for this world. He traveled
to the known cities in search for knowledge about the guilds to find which he
could rise in..but as is the wont of the gods he was slain before his prime.
Your mother has never been the same but you must take this void and fill it.
What your father will never show you, you must learn on your own. Varied are
the guilds, and I wish that you would have a peaceful life but I think it is
not for you. The magics do not run strong in our family, neither is a love
for woodcraft or metalcraft. I have found that I learned most about people.
What I need for you to learn I will not be able to teach you. I would that
you will puzzle the reason they are all connected and bound to one another
and the land. This I charge you with, on your oath and word, though you know
not the depth or width of that which will behold you. You must find a way to
keep the peace in the land. In the cities and without. You will find a way to
influence the world, and you must be cunning. Leaders shape this world, but
they often make enemies who will cut their vision short as well as their
lives. Do not be one of these men, though your ambition may burn through.
Find a way to see each of the guilds and more than that, the mighty Cabals
who run this land and help the land to...survive...I read once an old saying.
"Cheer the bear, or cheer the bull, but cheer both and you will be trampled
and eaten. Now, give an old man a cup of tea and let him lie."
