Chapter 2

The weeks which followed, were not mere goblins. Hordes arrived, organized
battallions of all races. The first assaults were met with victory, as the
skirmishers tested the fortifications of Werthius's outpost. Soon however,
it all changed. The sky darkened as uncountable amount of arrows rained
death upon his men. Each night they would survive, but barely. As the days
became weeks, the reality that there would be no aid, no reenforcement over
the horizon. They must hold their ground.

There was no sleep, no rest, no mercy. Their enemies toyed with them, no real
threat, they would attack, retreat briefly, and attack again. Werthius and
his men were wittled down. Now numbering only a dozen men, they used the cover
of darkness to retreat within the forest, making way to the keep of the baron
lord to the southeast, while behind them, their outpost burned in
flames.

They moved in silence, avoiding the hordes, striking quickly and silently at
the scouts as they made their way east. As they arrived to the keep, only a
day ahead of their enemies, they numbered three.


The months of battle as he stood along the walls of the keep were an enlightening
experience. By chance, he would fight alongside the man who would aid in
the creation of the foundation of his faith, and everything he would come
to embrace. It was on that wall, Werthius found faith. Each day would be a
gift, a chance to mold the outcome of the day, he gave praise to the Lady of
War, that his purpose be blessed with guidance, his arm be given the strength
to bear his arms, and that he know life long enough to see change in this dire
realm. For it was that truth, how dire the state of the world was in, that
was an awakening and startling experience, as though a blade had come lashing
down upon him.

The realm was in grave danger, forces of darkness were emerging in large
organization. Armies of the east, south, and north were growing in alarming rate.
Following behind Emperors, Chancellors, and self proclaimed lords.

It was in this clarity, a ember sparked within his soul, purpose awakened within
his heart and mind. Determination and temperance filled his body. His would stand
against this force, this darkness, and like a fire that had ignited within his
soul, he knew his purpose was to be a blade for the light, and stand against the
darkness as it threatened to engulf the land.

Each night, as the horns of battle echoed over the land, he would make a quiet
prayer to be guided, his blade to be true, and his body tempered for the coming
battle. Unknowing why, he glanced briefly to the southeast, to see a star, like
a flickering flame, shine brighter then ever before. Upon seeing it, his blood
would cool, his body calm, his mind focused. Rejuvenated, he looked north to the
approaching army, the coming battle, and welcomed it with unwaivering determination.

Role

Chapter 1

Werthius was born within the realm of nobility. Graced by privledge, he was
kept grounded by his swordmasters harsh words and stinging blade. His
determination and stubbornness knew little limitation, where there was failure,
there was humility, but where one could succeed; no matter what odds, there was
persistance and determination to the very end.

Werthius however, like all who lack experience and true clarity, was a young
naive boy.

As the hype for the crusades grew in intensity, Werthius was one of the first
to answer the call to arms. With an entrourage of his fathers most trusted
guard, he made with haste to the northern borderlands. The illusion of glory,
fame, and combat within his grasp.

The truth, and reality however, were far from what he read within his books,
and heard in bolsterous tales over the campfire.

Put in charge of a northern outpost within the lands of one of the northern
most barons, his initial arrival to camp was one mocked by the verterans
before him; His boyish looks, new and untarnished noble armor, and his bold
emerald eyes quickly had him dubbed among all within the camp as the Emerald
Prince.

Werthius first flirtations with battle were met wildly with success. Brief
interactions as hordes of goblins and trolls assaulted his fortications. He
would shout battle cries as he effortlessly overcome the small, minions, no
real danger to himself. The reality however, has a harsh way of making itself
known.
