Chapter 9

That night Jaragh pulls Doc into his office and asks him to have dinner with
him. The two share a nice meal together and as they are finishing Jaragh
turns to Doc and says "Vasliin, it is time for you to leave the orphanage. It
isnt because we dont want you here, but it is because you have so much more
to offer others. Do you have any idea what you intend to do." As he sits
there he looks at Jaragh and tells him about the events earlier in the day.
"Sounds like Scions to me, but to be honest, there are too many of the light
who use magic in similar ways without really thinking of the costs. What does
it mean to you though Vasliin, Thrym chose that path long ago, or in a sense,
it chose him." "Master Knight, it means Ive seen too much pain in this
world, and I believe a lot of it stems from magic. I intend to become a
villager, and learn to heal with natural means. I intend to help this world
become what it could and should be." "Vasliin, call me Jaragh, you are old
enough now, and honestly son, I wish you well on your journey, even though I
dont agree completely with all of their teachings, the village seems to be
the last place a little bit of honor remains in these lands." The two finish
their conversation and share a long hug before Doc sets out. As he goes to
leave the orphanage his favorite teacher and nurse comes running. He gives
her a big hug and kisses her on the cheek and thanks her for everything she
ever did for him. He bids her farewell and promises to stop by from time to
time and with that his journey into adulthood begins...

Chapter 8

A few more years go by and Doc has grown to be a young man, ready to face the
world. He makes his way from the orphanage to Thrym's school for his last
lesson before he graduates. As he is making his way down the road a group of
men in dark robes are walking in front of him. Thrym sees them as he walks
out of his home and lets loose a scream in anger, "Cry Havoc and let loose
the Dogs of War!." He is quickly beset by the men, one throwing fire,
another that has shed his clothes and has turned into a tiger. Thrym is
sorely pressed and Doc screams as he watches his teacher being torn apart.
With a shout of anger he gathers up a staff and jumps into the fray as
another figure in black joins against them. He roars in pain as his leg is
burnt but he quickly puts down the man throwing fire with a quick succession
of rapid strikes with his staff. As the mage falls the other two men flee
the scene. Doc growls and notices Thrym is down on one knee with his famous
sword propping him up. He is clearly hurt bad and Doc helps him limp inside
the school. "Who was that teacher?" Doc asks. "Kid, yer can call me Thrym
now, yer grown up, and yer made mer proud. They were mages kid, and wha yer
just saw was tha problem with this world. They don care who they hurt fer
their power, and they ain got no right ter be usin it."Doc continues to
work on Thrym with bandages and some poultices he has found in the office.
"It isn't the best job as I dont know how to do it properly yet, but it
should help." "Yer did good kid, not ta worry, ah've had worse. Ah think yer
kno all ah can tell yer fer now kid, its time fer yer ta go and live yer
life." "Ok Thrym" Doc says with a smile as he hugs his grumbling teacher. As
he turns to go Doc looks back at Thrym and says "Oh, and by the way, you can
call me Doc." Thrym laughs a hearty laugh as Doc makes his way out of the
school for the last time as his student.

Chapter 7

"What's wrong teacher?" Asks Doc. "Ah kid, tha fargin nexans are really
strong right now and tha village is hurtin. Magic is taintin more and more o
tha land and ah'm ter old ta do anything about it. Ah gotta get more o ma
students trained in tha head, and not just tha arm." "I'm not too old though,
what about me?" Doc asks. "Yer still young, and ah want yer ta follow ma
steps, but yer gotta make tha choice yerself. I'll teach yer all about it
tho, and yer can decide fer yerself." "Deal" Doc says.

Chapter 6

The rooster calls and dawn breaks the haze of sleep once again for Doc.
Months have gone by and he has grown taller with age and more muscular with
his training. The boys leave him alone unless they want a good thumping now,
and the girls all look on with admiration as he walks about. In his time
with Thrym he has learned to use more than just a staff. He has learned to
use all of his weapons at least in part, and continues to train in the ways
of combat. He makes his way through the village to the warrior school and
finds Thrym reading at his desk. "Oi, hey kid, yer an me are gonna take a
walk terday ok?" Doc nods his assent and the two of them ready a pack and
make their way into Hamsah Mu"Tazz. "I wan yer ta see tha place ah called
home fer a long time when ah was a bit older than yer. It used ter be over
tha sea, but tha lords moved it a long time ago." They head west out of
Hamsah and move down the road stopping to grab a pint for Thrym in the bar.
They reach the crossroads and Doc is just amazed at the sight of Galadon in
gonna get there someday."

A little further down the road they turn onto a secluded forest trail and
make their way to a nearly destroyed gate of an old city. "This bein tha
ruins of Ostallagiah tha yer been readin bout. It was destroyed a long time
ago by giants." They come to a small village with a large man standing in
front of it. He smiles at the sight of Thrym and says "Welcome Battlerager."
Doc looks at Thrym questioningly "Battlerager?" "Yar, ah wan yer ta meet
some folks here." They take a few steps inside and come to a grass covered
hut. Inside a sweet smell is coming from something in a kettle sitting over
a fire. As they enter Thrym and Doc are greeted by a pair of warriors. They
take a few moments to introduce themselves and they go about talking with Doc
about being a field medic. Doc is fascinated and his eyes sparkle with
delight as they show him how they use poultices and bandages to aide their
comrades in the village. "You, you don't use magic?" Doc asks. "Nah kid,
magic is vile stuff and shouldn't be played with. It has ruined many lives
and it corrupts. It really isn't natural like people want you to believe."
Says one of the village defenders. After their time together ends Thrym
takes Doc to meet a man named Tahren. Thrym and Tahren talk for a little
while about something called the "veil" and what has been going on with it.
Thrym doesn't look pleased as they make their way back to Hamsah.

Chapter 5

A rooster's call breaks the haze of sleep as light streams in through the
window of the dormitory. Vasliin hops out of bed excited and apprehensive
about what the day will bring. He puts on his finest play clothes and slowly
makes his way to breakfast. He picks at his food as he is too excited to
truly eat. Once breakfast is concluded and the children head to their
lessons, Jaragh instructs Vasliin to head north through the village and find
the warrior school. He makes his way north and comes upon a rough looking
man in fur armor that snickers when he sees him. "Oi, yer must be tha runt
tha Jaragh was sending to me! Giggle er something?" Thrym says.An irritated
look overcomes Vasliin and he says with some heat "it's Vasliin, but my
friends call me doc! You can call me Vasliin." Thrym lets out a huge belly
laugh and says "Yer got spit kid, thas good, cause yer gonna need it!" Thrym
turns and walks away from Doc with a wink and a motion for him to follow. He
leads him to a room full of weapons and Doc's eyes light up. He starts to
pick up a steel axe and Thrym grabs his hand and says "Yer ain ready fer tha
yet" and points him to the wooden weapons. "Yer need ta get something tha
ain too big fer ya, wha yer think about this sword?" Doc picks it up and it
just doesnt feel right. He shakes his head and they start going through all
of the weapons. They finally come to a very plain look shaft of wood. Doc
hefts it and grins, it feels very good in his hands. "So, yer likin tha staff
eh, well yer gonna have ter get some small ones, but its bein a good weapon
fer defendin."

Having chosen a weapon the two make their way onto the practice field where
Thrym begins to show Doc a number of moves with the staff. He seems to be a
natural with the weapon and so they spar lightly for the rest of the morning.
At lunchtime Thrym tells him to head on back to the orphanage and he will
see him tomorrow. Doc walks slowly out of the training grounds and as soon
as he is out of eyesight begins skipping with delight all the way back to his
home. After the rest of the day Doc goes to see Jaragh and tells him all
about it. Jaragh is pleased to hear of the progress and bids Doc a good
night. Doc sleeps better than he ever has in his life.

Chapter 4

Years go by and we find our svirfneblin child playing with other boys and
girls of the orphanage.He is quite a bit smaller than them and seems to get
knocked around a good bit. In one particular game we notice that the boys
are being rather mean to him and are literally trying to toss him about. He
objects but there is little he can do. On ones of the tosses the catcher
fails to grab him and he falls heavily to the dirt. He wails in pain and the
boys scatter as Jaragh comes hustling to the scene. He kneels down and says
"Vasliin, what happened this time?" The boy wont answer however and just
stays quiet. Jaragh smiles at him and says "You are too noble and proud for
your own good sometimes, lets go the infirmary." As they arrive at the
infirmary the teacher on duty lights up as she sees Vasliin and gives him a
big hug. "Hows my favorite patient? Scrapped up a bit again I see! Well,
lets get some bandages and fix you right up." The boy smiles at her and
Jaragh pats him on the head as he leaves. "Can I tend it this time?" he
asks. "Sure Doc, you can take care of it" the nurse says. Within moments
the healing salve has been applied and the bandage is nearly perfectly
wrapped. The nurse checks him out and sends him on his way with a hug and a
kiss on the forehead.

The boys dont play rough with him again that day, but after awhile another
child is screaming in pain. Vasliin is the first one on the scene and
quickly asks what happened. The girls were playing a game of ring around the
Rosie and one of them tripped on a rock. Her knee is scuffed up. Vasliin
asks for someone to get him some water from the fountain and once it arrives,
he sees to her injury. He cleans it out and gives it a kiss to make her feel
better. The little girl thanks him and he smiles at the compliment. The
bell rings for classes to begin and the children make their way into the
orphanage. As Vasliin approaches Jaragh pulls him aside with a stern look on
his face. Vasliin is concerned with the look until Jaragh laughs and pats
him on the back. "I saw what you did for that little girl, Vasliin
natural with her and with those bandages. I am concerned though because this
world is a rough place to grow up in." Vasliin looks at Jaragh
questioningly. "You need to learn how to defend yourself and so Ive asked a
friend of mine to teach you a few days a week for now. His name is Thrym and
he is a sour old goat, but he is the best fighter I have ever known, and he
knows a thing or two about being skilled with a bandage. You start with him
tomorrow." Vasliin thanks Jaragh with a hug and departs for class.

Chapter 3

A few minutes later the door to the building across from the cemetery opens
and a large man steps out into the darkness. He looks about and notices the
basket. He sighs at the sight of the child, not from frustration, but
sadness that another child has been left at his orphanage. He gently lifts
the basket and takes it inside. The woman, having seen that her child is
safe, takes a dagger from her dress and slits her wrists deeply. As her life
flows out she utters one final curse to the gods.

Chapter 2

Nine months pass and our svirfneblin whore is large in belly with the weight
and size of her pregnancy. The johns dont even bother to look at her
anymore and she has to beg for money for food. As night comes over the
desert city an ominous dark cloud creeps closer to the city. An hour goes by
and with it comes flashes of lightning and peels of thunder. Rain pours down
upon the normally dry city and the whore is forced to seek shelter in the
only place that will accept her. The missionary women do their best to calm
her and feed her some food, but before long the contractions start. The kind
women boil water and prepare fresh linens for the delivery and a local doctor
is called in to oversee the birth. All through the labor the whore curses
the man she did not know for a fool and curses the gods for her fate. The
women try their best to keep her calm and say prayers to counter her curses,
but the pain does not relent until finally the child is born. He is
unusually sized for a svirfneblin child, but you believe that must be the
small element of human DNA he must have received. The woman does not bother
to name the child, but the women who cared for her are wonderful with him as
his mother recovers under their care. Two weeks later she is strong enough
to go out on her own. They send her off with a few silver coins and plead
with her to leave her former life.

As the whore makes her way back to the city center she goes immediately to
the local grocer and buys a reed basket, she then makes her way to the tailor
and purchases some scraps of materials. The whore takes her child and walks
to the park where she begins to make a comfortable bed to lay him in. As the
baby sleeps the whore curls up on the grass next to the basket and cries for
hours until darkness finally comes over the city and the soldiers begin
lighting the lamps in the streets. The woman stands and runs with the basket
under her arm, desperate to reach the gates before they close for the night.
Darkness conceals her movement as she walks north out of Hamsah and through
the village of Balator. Her trek takes her to the front door of a building
that has been closed for the evening. The woman takes a note from her pocket
that she had written earlier in the day in places it in the basket with her
child. The baby coos at her, but she pays it no mind and quickly wraps on
the door three times. Upon the third knock a candle is lit in the window
nearest the door. The woman quickly stops knocking and turns and runs into
the cemetery across the street. You see her hide behind a gravestone and
watch the basket.

Chapter 1

A very swarthy looking sailor saunters his way down Eastern Al Abbas Street
from the docks where his ship has just come into port. He jingles the gold
pieces between his fingers as he walks past the soldiers roaming about the
city looking for troublemakers. His eyes and mouth betray the joy in his
heart at setting foot on land for the first time in months. He walks with a
very determined step as he heads to the center of town looking for his
hearts desire. You can tell from his skin and hair color that he must be at
least partly gnome or svirfneblin, not to mention the fact that he is only
four foot five inches tall. Otherwise his features speak more of his human
ancestry. As he reaches the market center he makes his way over to a group
of prostitutes hanging about near a dimly lit corner of the square. He looks
them over and smiles as he notices a small female svirfneblin among the
choosing. He flashes a smile and a gold coin and she flashes back with a wry
grin and a swish of her skirts. Together they make their way out of the
square and to the nearest Inn.

Passion envelops the couple as the sailor fulfills a desire that has been
pent up for months on-board his vessel. The svirfneblin is just happy to
have a man that is more suited to her size for once. The whole exercise goes
on for a long time and each time the man is careful to make sure his seed is
spent outside of the whore. As morning dawns and the two awaken they are
overcome with desire for each other and have one more romp. This time
however the two are so engrossed in the pleasure that the sailor forgets to
pull away at the last moment. The whore slaps the sailor in disgust and the
sailor slaps her until she is unconscious and lying on the bed. Realizing
his mistake he quickly dresses and gathers his belongings and makes his way
back to his ship. The svirfneblin woman is later found by maids and taken to
a local healer where she is cared for and released under her own power a few
days later.
