Chapter 8

In the ten years that Shaendath has been a Maran, his thoughts and
personality have shifted in ways that perhaps even he himself doesnt notice.
Though now in the forefront of a grim war, he has strangely found more humor
and joy entering his thoughts and speech. Perhaps it is the poor state of
the Empire, or the constant influence of his Marshall and Captain.

Shaendaths thoughts about the various cabals havent changed much, though he
finds himself more conflicted when it comes to the Village. Some of their
dark-hearted, though slated for the foul end of the judgment, fight with more
courage and zeal than their less-tainted compatriots. Though he still
battles the dark-hearted with conviction, he nonetheless finds them, in
certain respects, less reprehensible for the way they accept their fate.

Most changed in his life has been his pride and zeal. Increasingly,
Shaendath cares not whose name is hailed as vanquisher, as long as the
darkness is vanquished.He is more willing to ask for help, be it in
material aid, or aid in a battle he cannot win.Certain compatriots of his,
who seem more concerned with not honor but glory when it comes to their
conquests, do not sit well with him. Honor he understands, and indeed
Shaendath will occasionally stay out of others fights for fear of being too
bloodthirsty or opportunistic. But he feels that vainglory will be a strike
against those who bear it to the judgment.

Chapter 7

"Hail Shaendath, strike swift and true, the battle still wages." Shaendath's
ears, trained for subleties, noticed a subdued note in the Watcher's
steadfast voice. Quickly, he made his way throught he Gray Halls to the the
altar of the Light. Though filled with Maran, squires, and Tara'bal, the
halls lacked a certain presence. Shaendath's stopped mid-stride as he
recognized the absence and his face fell. "Maran Argivo."

Though the Captain had brought Shaendath into the Fortress, and surely the
Marshall, Cardinal, and many others had battled along side of him, it was
Argivo who had truly made Shaendath feel at home. Many years his elder,
Argivo had been in many ways a new father for Shaendath: giving him advice in
battle, encouraging him when he fell, and humbly giving him more than his
share of credit.

Shaendath's memory drifted back to his last encounter with the Maran...

Argivo tells you 'You are wily, sir, and I have great hopes for your future,
though I may not live to see it.'

You tell Argivo 'Surely if your hopes are realized, Maran, it shall be much
of your memory that inspires me.'

...and his back straightened, filled with resolve. "Rest well, Argivo. The
Light remains strong."

Chapter 6

The stern elven voice of Eachainn, Captain of the Brigade, pierced through
Shaendath's soul. "You are the worst soldier of the light I have seen
Shaendath. You do the Fortress and your captain no credit."

"Captain, what would you have me do?"

"Leave."

Shaendath tried to straighten, but his shoulders remained hunched in
humilation. As he turned away from his Captain, he ran a hand over his head,
feeling his scalp through his thinning hair. Perhaps he should leave, before
the rest of his life was wasted ungainfully. He took one step, then another,
eyes downcast. Every pace felt closer to the judgment than the last...

Shaendath sat upright suddenly, a profound shudder waking him from the dark
dream. He thought he heard dark laughter in the edge of his mind, and shook
his head to drive it away. Standing up, the memory of his latest fall still
fresh, his shoulders found that strength they had previously lacked.

"I may be the Light's worst soldier, but I am a soldier still."

Chapter 5

Though Shaendath had not considered himself naive when he first started
adventuring, he would now admit that he had no concept of the things beyond
his village. There, justice and judgment had been a straight-forward affair.
Wrongdoing was dealt with swiftly, and true evil was but a fairytale. But
the first time Shaendath witnessed a mummy, surrounded by zombies and
devouring a still-fresh corpse, he realized that the evil at work here was so
great that no one could afford to stand idle. To do his part in bringing the
evil to judgment, he decided to pledge his blade to the Fortress of the
Light, in hopes of eventually being accepted as a squire.

Chapter 4

Having travelled more widely the lands of Thera, Shaendath has gained more
knowledge of both the Scion and the Battleragers. Shaendath saw the horrors
that walked beside the Scions, foul nightwalkers of extra-planar terror, and
grew to detest anyone who would beckon such unholy might. Their ultimate
judgment seems a foregone conclusion to him.

As for the Villagers, Shaendath grew in respect for them. Though the warred
against some of the Light, he saw in some of them great honor, if great
misunderstanding. He therefore approaches most under a flag of truce, unless
they are directly threatening his friends or the innocents. The darkhearted
he hunts when their character is revealed, though considers them less of a
pressing threat than most of the dark magi they fight.

Chapter 3

Though he appreciates the stern order of the Empire, Shaendath rejects the
Empire for its ruthlessness and opportunism. To him, the Imperial Law is a
thin veneer over a bloodthirsty mob, held in place for the amusement of the
Emperor and his dark lords.

Shaendath is much more sympathetic toward the Tribunal, and being inclined
towards an orderly society usually obeys their laws. But has no desire to
enforce their laws himself, as they allow evil to coexist among the innocent.
believes that laws should point the way to salvation, not be
objects of near worship in and of themselves.

Shaendath is wary of the Outlanders as he sees civilization as a natural
extension of the natural order.While he sees no necessity in large cities,
in fact preferring small villages or hunting shacks, he doesn't see them as a
blight either.

Most strongly, Shaendath is attracted to the tales of the Fortress of the
Light. Those of its fold have the blessing of the Gods of the Light
themselves, seemingly putting them in a good place for the coming judgment.
He is, however, somewhat hesitant to hunt evil at any cost, believing that
open defiance of the law may cause more casualties and damnations than an
orderly response to evil. In extreme cases though, such as third-party
defense, or where the justice of the Light sends a stronger message than
obedience to the law, goodness must prevail over evil.

Chapter 2

Shaendath's late birth let him see parents die early, his father passing away
only a few months before his mother followed. The peaceful, fearless way
they approached their deaths had a huge influence on his outlook: he didn't
want to have any dark sins to haunt him as death's door loomed larger. He
saw great value in helping the weak and protecting their innocence, that they
not lash out with anger and find satisfaction in their opponents' pain.

The functioning of his village also influenced his orderly outlook. Laws
upheld the social order, helping the citizens understand what they should and
should not do, informing their consciences and guiding their lives. However,
as Theran laws are not the ultimate authority, they may be violated in the
pursuit of the greater good if not openly challenged. Shaendath would make a
strong stand in defense of a third party, though the laws might not recognize
it as valid.

Chapter 1

Shaendath began his life in a small village not far from Galadon, living a
fairly normal existence in his youth. His aged parents lead simple but
honest lives, stressing the importance of doing the right thing, not the easy
thing. Beyond all else, they believed in keeping their souls clean before
the Gods of the Light, fearing and yet eager for the judgment to come.

Village bullies were not uncommon, but Shaendath's father insisted he learn
how to protect himself -- and, oftentimes, others -- rather than relying on
others.His small stature demanded quick strikes rather than brute strength
and stealth rather than plain confrontation, perhaps setting his path for
future endeavors.

Despite his small village, Shaendath had excellent teachers in his parents,
whose simple philosophy became his own.
