Chapter 6

Caitlyan has grown as a woman and as a BattleRager. Her deeds and steadfast
nature have prompted the Commander to ask her to be the next Drillmaster, as
Iepnier's death was a ways in the past. The naming took quite some time, however,
and Caitlyan began to grow concerned that the Gods of Battle deemed her unfit for
some reason. She eventually made contact with Lady Iunna, and later with Lord Thror,
who both told her that there was nothing unfit that they knew, they simply did not know
that Salyeris wanted her in the position.

It turns out that a simple typographical error by the courier may have been
the cause for the wait all along. In the end, the wait made the position even
more valuable to Caitlyan, and the experience caused her to grow in spirit and
strength.

Now she is Drillmaster, and a bit nervous about it. All eyes are on her as never
before, it seems. She will make mistakes and grow from them, but she may not have
as much leeway as before.

In addition, she has been graced by the presence of Lord Fjarn, albeit a short
visit, as Village matters pressed. The beginnings of a discussion, though, and
she begins to feel more at peace with herself than she has since childhood.

Chapter 5

Caitlyan has been made stronger by her earlier trials, and she has enough
wisdom and intellect to recognize this. She has worked to strengthen her
body and her fighting abilities. She has sought, and joined the Village of
the BattleRagers.

She was challenged by the Commander, Salyeris, with tasks of varying difficulty,
but all more stringent than most applicants face. In time she managed to earn a
recommendation from Salyeris and join the Village. She has chosen to
let her berserker rage come to the fore, and uses hammers as well as
knives to attempt to crush and slice the mages she has come to despise.

If she did not already have reasons to despise magicians, she's earned many
since joining the Village. She has managed to ascend to the pinnacle of the
guild of warriors, and has recently been spoken to by the Commander regarding
the post of Drillmaster, recently left vacant by the passing of Iepnier.

All of these things are fulfilling, but they are not answers to her questions
about Honor. She has managed to locate the shrine of Lord Fjarn, and has prayed
to him. No answer has greeted her yet, but she is not concerned. It will come, if
it is Fated to come, that conversation with her lord.

In the meantime, her own thoughts on Honor have evolved from the childish
expectations that factored from her time with her Father. While she understands
better, now, what her Father was feeling and thinking, she disagrees with it even
more strongly, now.

Still evolving, to be certain. But her view of Honor now includes the following:
One of the most honorable acts a woman can achieve is to bear the shame of her own
dishonor with humility, courage, and strength. To give in to the dishonor is to
dishonor yourself further.

Chapter 4

Since the events of that night, Caitlyan has drifted from place to place,
filled with self loathing. She can no longer bring herself to commit the
ritual suicide that her father and brother did. She feels shame at that.
She feels shame at having caused the death of her entire family. She often
thinks about how much easier things would have been for everyone if she had
simply given in to the advances of the foolish nobleman's son.

Mostly, she thinks about Honor, and magicians.

Magicians do not seem to know honor. At least, not as her father practiced
it. A true warrior fights with his blade and his muscles and his wits, not
with tricks and wiggling fingers and magic words.

And yet, Father's version of honor does not seem completely right any longer.
Rather than face his own shame and carry it with him, he left Caitlyan and
brother when they needed him most. It seemed selfish to her, now. Cowardly.

Dishonorable.

The events have left Caitlyan with a hatred of magicians, irrational as it
may be. Something snapped as she saw the mystical balls of fire engulfing
her home and family. Magicians must be killed.

Caitlyan eventually arrived in the large city of Galadon and attempted to
simply blend in there as if she had lived there all of her life. As she
considers her future and the concepts of Honor, she trains in the guild of
warriors, taking the studies she began as a child and pushing them further
than anyone who knew her then would have thought possible.

She has heard tales of the god Fjarn and will most likely seek his guidance
on matters of Honor. She needs guidance, but for now does not feel worthy
to seek him out.

In the meantime, she favors neither those who consider themselves pure nor
the ones that are deemed wicked. Nor does she consider the concepts of Chaos
and Order important.

What is Honor? Magi must pay. These are her world, for now.

Chapter 3

The nobleman's manor was no fortress, but it was not as simple as sneaking
up to the back door of a standard home, either. Yet this night, Father and
brother were like ghosts, moving from tree to tree, avoiding detection by
the manor guards and the magician attendants alike.

They slipped over the wall in between passes by the guardsmen, and stole
into the manor proper. Talons padded by thick-soled claw-guards, they silently
moved in the shadows toward the sounds of muffled struggling, coming from
the bedchambers of the nobleman's son.

Caitlyan was there, still clothed, struggling against the drunken son of the
noble. The nobleman himself was seated in a chair nearby, head in his hands.

As Father and brother moved further into the room, those gathered took note.
The nobleman's son slapped Caitlyan with a wicked backhand, sending her
reeling to the side of the room, and then made for a nearby weapon. The noble
stood quickly, attempting to dissuade the vengeful men, offering vague words
of apology.

Father paused momentarily, looking at his daughter, the nobleman's son, the
nobleman, and finally his own son. He nodded once, and then struck. Brother
struck the noble, Father struck the son, and both were dead in an instant.

Father looked at Caitlyan once more and sank to his knees.

"My house has lost all honor." was all that he said before quickly reversing
his sword and ramming it into his own stomach.

Brother stared for a few long, drawn out breaths, and then mimicked his father's
actions. "My house has lost all honor."

Caitlyan stood shakily. Her entire life was in ruins. She fumbled toward the
body of the nobleman's son, prying the long knife he had tried to use out of
his deathgrip.

"My house has lost all honor." she whispered.

Just then, the door opened. One of the magicians leered at Caitlyan and uttered
an incantation.

Caitlyan went flying. The dagger flew from her hands. The magician was clumsy,
however, and slipped in Father's blood as he moved to grab her.

Caitlyan evaded his grip and ran. She somehow slipped out of the manor and into
the night. She had escaped the physical, but the spiritual dishonor could not
be outrun.

Chapter 2

The nobleman's son had apparently taken notice of Caitlyan and had
desired her for some time. He calmly sipped tea, watching her over
the brim of his cup. Mother noticed but was far too timid and, of
course, respectful, to say anything.

He got up to leave and asked Caitlyan to walk with him to the end
of the path to the house. She complied, and as the path went round
a bend and out of view from the front door, he attempted to kiss her.

Offended, she rebuffed him. He slapped her angrily, calling her a
choice epithet that called into question her heritage, upbringing,
and sexual preferences, and stalked off.

He returned shortly after with several of his personal magicians.
They cornered Mother and all of the children, binding them all.
Caitlyan alone attempted to resist - after all this was the son of a
respected nobleman. What were the rest to do against trained magicians,
in any case? Though she attempted to fight, it was quickly clear that
Caitlyan was no match for the attackers and soon she too was bound.

The men carried Caitlyan away, leaving the rest of the family tied up,
and then bombarded the home with fireballs. Four innocents were burned
to a crisp.

Father and brother returned home to a scene out of a nightmare. Mother
had wriggled and writhed in her bondage, enough to cover the younger
siblings with her own body, but though she saved them from the worst
of the flames, she could not provide shelter from the horrible, choking
smoke.

One of the magi in the retinue of the nobleman's son had been careless,
leaving behind a clue that was enough for Father to discern who had
committed the atrocity. He and brother prepared silently, methodically.

Then they moved.

Role

Chapter 1

Raised in a strict household, Caitlyan is the daughter of a member of the
Guard of the Steel Tears, a bodyguard to arial nobility. Her father was
a master swordsman, though unlike most adventurers he chose to use two-handed
swords singularly, as opposed to the popular dual-wielding style.

He was a reserved man at home. His wife was demure, remaining home to tend
the children and await his return each day. The concepts of gaining honor
through obedience and respecting your elders were driven home hard to all
of Caitlyan's siblings, and to her as well. Complete your studies, both the
physical and mental. Play quietly. Respect Father. Respect the nobility.

Caitlyan was the eldest girl, with one older brother and three younger siblings.
When she turned fifteen, she began receiving training with small weaponry, in
secret, from one of her father's compatriots with the Guard. Never did she feel
more alive, more free, than when she sparred with him.

At the same time, her older brother was turning seventeen, and was considered
old enough to begin the training to become one of the Guard himself. Father was
very proud of his eldest, and unintentionally began to show the rest of the
children less and less love and interaction.

One day, one of the nobility was traveling to Galadon. The Guard was required
as an escort, and it was Father's shift that would be guarding him. The eldest
was going along for his first time to observe a mission, though Father had warned
that it would likely be quite boring.

The nobleman had a son, who came to call at Caitlyan's home. Mother served him
tea, the children showed him proper respect, and all seemed well.

But they were about to learn that birthright does not necessarily make one truly
Noble.
