Chapter 2

The howling would always begin somewhere far away and dark.

Somewhere out there, it was baying like some sort of deranged wolf or bear.

And yet when Dvalygg tried to envision the sound's source, he couldn't help
but picture something more human.

Blackness of night shrouded whatever it was from his sight. He was mostly
thankful for that. He had a feeling his imagination wouldn't do justice to
whatever was loping through the frostbitten forest.

But the sound came closer. The grating, fleshy rumble of the beast-god's
excited breath grew louder. The howls grew deafening.

And there, in the moonless night, it was. Felt more than seen, it galloped,
its massive size causing the air itself to rumble.

Dvalygg's body grew numb and his heart pounded within his chest and he was
sure he'd somehow leave his body before the the savage patron deity of his
people actually reached him.

That dream had come true, in a way.

In the arena, the half-elf said either Dvalygg or his father would have to
die, or both of them would.

"You should be honored. The great, great, great, great grandchildren of the
stronger of you are very important to me," he said, grinning. "They'll
probably even get me admitted to Nyathl Ikalith."

Vunereyr, insane with rage, wept and began to choke the life out of his
smaller son.

Dvalygg scrambled, kicking his feet. He was the terrified boy in his dream.
The beast was upon him, but there was nowhere to run.

Shadows gathered around the edges of his vision as he began to lose
consciousness. Wildly, he imagined the beast. Somewhere in the darkness at
the edge of death. He stared into the precipice and let go of his fear...

His father was choking him sloppily, he realized. He waited until the
pressure on his windpipe let up as his father cried and screamed and looked
back at his dead wife's body.

When that time came, Dvalygg was ready: He uttered some words and his
mother's hand tore away from her arm and flew through the air, gouging his
father's eyes.

Dvalygg coughed, gagged and uttered the phrase again. He couldn't hear
himself over his father's screams. His mother's stomach burst open, splashing
them both with all sorts of fluids and fleshy bits, and making way for her
intestines.

The entrails -- longer than Dvalygg would have imagined -- roped around his
father's neck and squeezed. Unsure of the power of his magic, Dvalygg stood
up to use his own hands to hold the gruesome ligature in place.

Now, to escape.

Chapter 4

Dvalygg was eventually marked as an Initiate of the Beast and chose the path
of the mummy to maintain his ability to experience mortal pleasures.

He was initially revolted at the thought of undeath, but as he began to age,
the thought of agelessness appealed to him.

During his incubation, Dvalygg believes he maintained some degree of
consciousness for most, if not all, of the years the process took. The
unnatural, claustrophobic sensation caused his mind to begin regressing.

In effect, Dvalygg is filled with childlike wonder over his new state.If
he were a human child, he'd be digging up worms, climbing trees and hunting
rabbits.

But he's not.

He's a newborn of undeath. Exploring his newfound abilities to devour life
force and inspire horror in the living has become a game to him.

Chapter 3

Outside the Inn of the Eternal Star, a kindly old druid listened to the young
boy's story, his face a mask of disgust and concern.

"What happened then?" he asked.

"I escaped and made my way here," the boy said.

Something about the child's intensity unnerved the druid. At first, he
thought it was a child's tall tale. But now, he wasn't sure.

"How did you escape?" he asked the boy.

"I made my father and mother come back to life, but not very well," he said,
his bright blue eyes either vacant or disturbingly present, the druid
couldn't tell.

"My mother kept the man in the cloak distracted long enough for me and my
father to escape," the boy said.

"Where's your father now?" the druid asked.

"He fell apart, little by little, as we walked," the boy said. "Every time I
looked back, more of him was gone. It was a long way."
The boy pulled a decaying hand out of a sack. It had a strange mark on it.
"This is all that's left."

He held it up to his neck, where it appeared to match bruises left around his
throat. The druid gasped.

"Well, look, son... I'm sure Olin needs someone to run dishes, and, eh...
well, you probably need..."

The boy cut him off: "I need to find a desert where a river runs. I saw it in
a dream."

"What did you say your name was?" the druid asked.

"Dvalygg," the boy answered.

The druid sighed and gave the child directions to Hamsah Mu'tazz.

On sanity:
Dvalygg is deeply traumatized by what happened -- both by the obvious
psychological trauma of killing one parent with the corpse of the other and
the mysterious magical experimenting his captor performed upon him.

He, however, firmly believes the event was planned by The Great Wild Beast to
force him to confront his fears and become stronger. He now seeks Saraba to
fulfill his destiny.

On good vs. evil:
Dvalygg sees only practical and impractical. Instincts are practical. Social
constructs are not. He is thus, for lack of a better phrase, an insensitive
prick.

On nature:
He is somewhat adept at survival in the wilds due to his upbringing in the
barbarian culture of the Ma'rin. He does not despise nature and, in fact,
sees necromancy as a naturalistic feat. He has a distaste for cities.

Chapter 1

Dvalygg let go of his mother's intestines, releasing his now-dead father's
neck from a strangle-hold, to wipe her blood and feces from his burning eyes.

The boy felt free and -- what's the word? Solid. Yes, solid. As though a
billion grains of sand in his soul coalesced into a stone. The fear was gone.

Even the hatred he felt for his captor, who had forced him to do this, had
dissolved. He calmly began to prepare his escape.

Minutes earlier, his mother and father were still in neighboring cages in the
center of a palatial room.

It had been nineteen days by their count since they were abducted from the
land of their Ma'rin tribe and subjected to countless tests and experiments
that twisted their minds. The talisman of transportation around his neck
didn't work there.

Dvalygg was fourteen years old. His father was a talented death mystic who
led a small village and served as a spiritual guide for its inhabitants. But
the Ancestors he communed with so often did not warn him of this nor guard
him from it. The Great Wild Beast, the deity of Dvalygg's people and the
terror of the boy's dreams, allowed this to happen.

A voice echoed through the room.

"The strongest of you will live."

Suddenly, they were in a small, circular room, freed from their cages. Blood
stained the ground. Old blood and new blood. An arena. A half-elf stood in
the center of the room.

Dvalygg's father, Vunereyr, was the strongest. Dvalygg knew it. The boy had
only recently learned to animate parts of the dead. His mother was not a
mystic nor a warrior and was not fit for combat.

The pale but handsome half-elf glanced casually at each of the three Ma'rin.

"More than adequate specimens, the alpha males..." he muttered. "The female,
however..."

He snapped his fingers and her neck spun to the side and her spine crackled.
She dropped to the ground.

"You could have done better."

A horrid numbness crept over Dvalygg as he watched his mother die.
