Chapter 5

Let all men know, that a lifetime of service to the Goddess Baerinika has left me
full of gifts and joy in equal measure. For each trial and demand there was the
accomplishment of virtue, and so doubly were my efforts returned to me.
That you may know my faith is sincere from my heart, I have written a hymn to praise
the Lady Baerinika, Goddess of Light, the Maiden of the Brave.


Though the Darkness may encircle,
I shall never fear the night
Though the mists gather to bewilder,
I will not abandon my righteous fight
Even if my path grows faint,
With Her beside me,
I march upon the road of faith
for the dominion of the Kingdom of Light.

Baerinika, Goddess of Light, Fierce Jaguar,
through You the Light inspires
the strong to harbor the innocent,
the wise to find their insight,
the devoted to find their joy.

In the jungle the shadows gather,
but they shell not find me at the campfire,
I am among them, waiting patiently
for the right moment to strike.
In pursuit I find an answer
to the riddle of life.
In striking the shadow I find
the echo of the Divine.

Baerinika, Goddess of Light, Maiden of the Spear,
through You the Light inspires
righteous wrath in the strong,
cleverness in the just,
and the joy in the hearts of the devoted.

Upon our crusade we march with Her purpose,
to end the threat of the darkness,
our purity is our focus,
as she guides us upon our journey
and our souls are in the care
of the Maiden of righteous fury,
Baerinika!

Chapter 4

Age pressed deeply upon me as my closest comrades fell
Of what purpose was their deeds, I wondered,
beyond sending our foes to the legions of Hell.
This spectre's ravages I could not fight,
as my strength faded and hair turned white,
my hope began to dim, and the deeds I thought
carved in stone, seemed in my darkest hour
written in loose sand, at the mercy of the passing wind.

The Jaguar Divine bade me sit beside Her
in the dirt to which I would soon return.
She nudged me from my falsely prideful course,
back to the virtue of the Light which I adore.
As my darkest hour loomed her faith burned bright,
and reignited the embers of my soul.
The future's hope is what I battle to bring forth,
That Virtue's triumph resides not solely in spirit,
but upon the earth.

The question I asked the Spear Maiden at first sight
is now answered in full,
Courage is freedom from pain, despair, and fear,
Feedom from doubt, freedom from hesitation,
Freedom from Death,
Freedom to give one's utmost in service of the Light.

Chapter 3

The fifth brother of the brood stood above Argivo's unmoving form. It hissed briefly at the
fourth brother, and then they both bent down to take great tearing, bloody bites. Battered and
weary, they sped away from the old farm to rejoin the larger Horde about to descend upon the
large village nearby. At their farm, an old couple, too infirm to reach before nightfall
the defenses prepared by the seargeant and his men at the village, wept silent tears for their
young defender as they survived another night.

Chapter 2

He stood on the road, under darkness, waiting. He felt the enemy move closer. Shadows moved
on the road in the distance, stalking toward him with predatory grace. He could catch glimpses
of them, occasionally, as they pressed closer. Behind him was the turn-off onto the farm of
the old, infirm couple too weak to heed the evacuation order. He could feel them too, awaiting
tonight's events with a sort of graceful resignation he could not understand. In his hands,
he held an old, rusted sword, its crumbling hilt carefully wrapped in rags. The edge,
barely honed after hours of painful effort, gleamed slightly in the moonlight as he drew it to
prepare himself.

He could see them now, massing on the road for the final rush toward him. They knew he stood
to challenge them, this night. There were five of them, twisted amalgamations of the worse
parts of different predators. Cruel raptor's beaks mixed with reptilian scales and
insectile pincers, amid a jumble of other less savory features. With a hiss, they fanned out
into a half circle and sped toward him. It was time.


Fear welled up inside of him with the pounding of his heart.
"I am worthless," Argivo whispered.
"Run now, and you might live!" his gut demanded.
"You whore's son, you'll never accomplish anything!" his father screamed.
"Give up, it's easier and safer," his mother advised.
"A untrained man will be eaten alive by 'em," the old seargeant warned.
And then, the quiet idea that started him on his path resurfaced, moments before the clash.
Argivo closed his eyes briefly, and thought, "I am unworthy. My life is nothing, but I can
spend it for the Light. If I am worthless, then I can shed my life like tree sheds its leaves.
I am unworthy, but I can give myself to the Greater. I can serve the Light!"
"Keep moving, Argivo," Argivo whispered. "Keep moving."


He opened his eyes to find the first beak descending. Parrying with all his strength, he slashed
the blade across its tough throat, and kept spinning. A flurry followed too fast to follow. Acting
on instinct, he allowed them their blows into his vitals, so long as he could drive his sword into
each in turn. Stumbling away to the side of the road, he left three unmoving. Blood thumped out
of him in great steaming bursts, and he had somehow switched to his sword to his left hand
He could not feel anything in his right hand at all and dared not look at it. The fourth creature,
wary and slashed, circled around to his front as he tried to breathe. He lifted his sword up for
one last blow, and something thick and heavy hit his neck from behind. He fell into dirt, stones
tearing into his eyes, and then knew only darkness.

Chapter 1

From : Argivo
Subject: My quest, Sirs.

Dear Sirs,
I send this missive to thank you for teaching me further about the Fortress of Light.
You have both challenged me and taught me to examine my purpose carefully...
Baylin with the blade, and Angynn with words. I have since we last spoke
challenged many of the tainted. I have much to learn, as even the least skilled of them
managed to evade my killing blow. Many of the most shrewd delight in using Healers and dirt kick
and our battles drag on for hours or even days, with no resolution. In the times between
such battles, I work assiduously on replacing my gold so that I can employ the leeches to such
purpose again, and on aiding those of the Light whom I am able. I do not keep much,
as I prefer to give away what I can to those comrades who are joined in purpose under the Light.
If there is aught in your wisdom you wish to share with me, or some purpose I should be pursuing,
I am always available to listen to your wisdom. In truth, such wisdom is worth far more
than a sword or gold in pursuit of the Tainted.

In a boarding house within the settlement of Darein, a young man named Argivo
carefully examines his newly shaved head and face in the mirror. The flush of the bath
still upon his cheeks, he stares at the contrast between his cleaned up presentation
and his old rakish slovenliness. A glimmer of dread touches him, and he wonders if he is worthy
to be a Squire yet again. "No," he thinks, "Baylin has taught me to forge ahead without doubts."
"The Light has redeemed my worthlessness, and whether or not I triumph, I shall fight to my last."
Fear and self doubt firmly banished to stalk in the shadows of his mind once again, he turns
to the quest at hand.
