Chapter 9

Anathema... The words sounded ugly even coming from the Zaan's sweet voice.
How had it come to all this then. Cotzibue, that greedy brash undead thing
had cause all of the Zaan's problems. It played coy and weak when it was a
human, but the second it arose as a mummy it's power hungry demeanor was
palpable even to others as hungry. Her or it as it was now's greatest flaw
was such a sad lack of patience for something that had an eternity to
accomplish what it must. The Zaan almost admitted he had underestimated Lohoq
as well, but realized perhaps it was some dark spell from the mummy as The
Zaan's judgment was always flawless. He had even played both sides, playing
the loyal War Master to Siyvh all the while demanding the votes of the
others. In the end their pathetic botched attempt had caught even him in its
vortex of stupid. The would all pay for this besmirchment, even the Emperor
for allowing him to be tossed aside like this.

Life as an Anathema had not been all bad, many feared him still, or
were still loyal despite his situation. Some, and Zaan would remember every
one dared to actually disrespect him, and they would pay when he rose again
like a great handsome phoenix. What would be a surprise to some, but not The
Zaan was all the fans he had amongst the heavens. Mighty Thror let him know
that his sappers would be watching to see if The Zaan fell into despair as
most Anathema did, or reforge himself to something greater in the fires of
adversity. Then finally Enlilth came to him, claiming not to be a fan, but he
almost pleaded with The Zaan to take the oath once more and rejoin an Empire
that was lost without him. The Zaan took mercy on them and accepted, though
to his great displeasure he was not immediately made War Master on the spot!
No he had to once again work his way through the ranks like some fresh oath
and not like the pending Emperor he was. The fire of his rage fueled him like
the hottest forge of Mortorn smelting mithril.

Weeks passed and at last his steely determination paid off as the
crowds roared with delight and his proud blades threw themselves at his feet
as he was reforged through the fire of his tribulations into the War Master
of the Empire once more. It had been a brutal reminder of how even one as
mighty as The Zaan could be fallen to the deadly politics and intrigue of the
Empire. However this would not deter him from his lofty goals, he would be
Emperor and this time nothing would stand in his way. He could almost hear
them screaming in adorations, "We Love you The Emperor Zaan!"

Chapter 8

Afraid The War Master Zaan had to fire his chronicler, the man turned out to be
just the word kind of lunatic. If you want something done you do it yourself, and so
the greatest story ever told continues.

Maugath stomped around the Throne room as usual spouting his garbled
religious dribble as always. The Zaan relished being the Devil's minstrel,
but saw his infernal master as a way to more glory and power, this Minotaur
was a true believer and the favored of their lord. He was also the only true
threat to the Emperor's seat amongst the existing council, and would not be
so easily vanquished as Oringus. While The Zaan found him a powerful ally he
did not play second fiddle to anyone, friend or foe. The Zaan would play upon
his zealotry, and would fill the bull's head with dangerous ideas, pretending
to practice his fiddle while lounged about, but really making sure the tune
helped the ideas lodge themselves in the bull's mind. The idea was rather
simple, only by daring the depths of the Inferno alone would Maugath truly be
as great as the Arch-Devils. Bringing an army only showed his weakness, and
so one day after months of prodding Maugath stomped off down below alone,
never to be seen again. Ah Vanity truly The Zaan's favorite sin.

The Emperor Siyvh was in the way of The Zaan's true glory, but The
Zaan had enough respect for the assassin to realize it had to be dealt with
flawlessly. The other council members posed little threat, Norrington or
perhaps his imminent replacement Lohoq seemed easy enough to control. Drexar
the rarely woken would be more difficult because The Zaan had little time to
ply his craft on him and what made him tick was a mystery. The new High
Priest Farror the lover of shiny things seemed pliable, but what trinket was
big enough to dangle in front of him. He would convince them the Empire
needed a glorious visible leader to inspire the masses, not one that spent
their time lurking in the shadows. The Zaan would bide his time, carefully
moving his chess pieces into position but in the end the world will kneel to
The Emperor Zaan.

Chapter 7

I fear Zan has grown suspicious of me, he may realize I have been writing two
versions of his autobiography. I've made several copies of my secret text but I
fear for my life, he is a madman.

Chapter 6

The mighty Zaan's plan had worked perfectly, his whores had been slipping
Oringus doses of mind control poison for weeks. So as War Master Oringus
called The Zaan into the sect hall to no doubt berate him again with no
witnesses present, all he needed to do was intone his commands at just the
right pitch. "Remove your armor Oringus, hand over that sack of coin, and
now impale yourself on your favorite polearm." sang The Zaan. Sweat covered
Oringus's brow as he tried to resist, but The Zaan had taken no chances with
this. "Thank you for the coin Oringus, this will ensure my place as the new
War Master." The Zaan mocked the lifeless bleeding corpse with a final
salute. The Zaan would be War Master as he deserved, next stop the Emperor's
throne.

The War Master Zaan, began his reign but Oringus had let the sect
fall into disrepair. The few Blades left were either suicidal like Skenhog
and Jabjulak, or power hungry usurpers like Astrex or Draktah. Especially
Draktah, The Zaan wanted to anathema him on the spot for his sheer lack of
respect to his superiors, a disgusting lack of tact in the wonderful game of
politics or his painfully obvious desire to betray The Zaan, but he would
keep this one close to better watch for his knife in the back, for now.

Chapter 5

Zaanzorbarus was so drunk he barely remembered the words to the song much
less where he was when he sang the Tribunal to sleep, to the absolute shock
of the War Master and a few other Imperials. He was very lucky he is such an
asset to the Empire and was promoted once again. It will be interesting to
see if he can avoid another such debacle. It is lucky his mind has been put
to order by the Blood Oath, but he is still a drunken mad man with an
incredible ego. At least for now he is no longer as prone to his rash and
erratic actions.

Zaanzorbarus hardly led the expedition to the Inferno he was merely dragged
along after his long time ally the Minotaur shaman Maugauth. He did find
the place more fascinating and terrifying then any he had ever encountered,
he was instantly addicted. It was not his family's shades he saw down there
in the cursed wood, just an absinthe induced hallucination and wishful
thinking on his part. Not all his debauchery and evil ways could prepare him
to meet the Prince of Darkness and what accepting to serve as his voice would
do to him. His enormous ego crushed, the dark truths he hid from himself
revealed, his will dominated. Zaanzorbarus will never recover completely from
it, but his ego has managed to twist the despair he feels into something
else. He wears the mark as a status symbol but he has fooled himself into
thinking his new melancholy music is because everyone else is depressed, not
him.

Chapter 4

They all fear the greatness of The Zaan. The War Master most of all, he
ordered me to sing and mid song entered Galadon, so deep in the chorus I did
not notice, my voice so strong caused a tribunal to faint. I awoke him with
another song but the tribunal so embarrassed issued a warrant for me. The War
Master used it as a chance to take away the promotion the Emperor himself had
given. Of course it did not take long for me to prove my greatness again and
rise to my Elite status once more. However it may be harder to dislodge this
War Master then I previously thought, he seems to service the Emperor in more
ways than one. The old me would have done something crazy and slay them all
out right, but I realize now even the Greats like myself most play politics
sometimes. Perhaps one of my whores can slip him some poison. I will drink
some more on this as it is most frustrating.

I have descended into the very depths of Hell itself, leading the Empire to
Infernal glory. There amongst the tormented souls I saw my brothers and
father for a brief second as we battled some horrible army of demon mastiff's
in the wood. I felt a strange feeling I've never felt before some might say
despair to think proper vengeance will never be mine. I cheered myself up by
offering the Provost of the Tribunal as a sacrifice that we might make our
way deeper into the pit, this leader of men laid low with but a whispered
word from The Zaan. Finally we reached where few mortals have ever tread by
reaching the icy prison of Satan himself. I have been chosen as the Lord of
Darkness's Avatar upon the lands for he saw the glory I am destined for.
Though I must admit, when his eternal darkness marked my Spirit as his own
and showed me horrors beyond imagining, something has happened to me. My
thoughts seem dark and dreary all the time, not full of it's usual prevailing
ways. I finally realized what it was, it is the pity I feel for all those who
are not Zaanzorbarus Gloriatus. Such a tragedy it is for them I have found my
songs now reflect that, and my music has never been greater. After my climb
to Emperor in my mortal life, I shall endeavor to become and Arch-Devil
myself, I wonder what drinking souls like wine will be like.

Chapter 3

The King of Hamsah Mu'tazz the Norington pleaded with me to join their mighty
Empire and make it great once more. Some said he was a King of bandits but we
all know how jealous others are of those in power. This worked into my greatest
of schemes even better then I'd hoped, and no less than a King would do to
give the Magnificent Zaanzobarus Gloriatus this Oath of Blood. The entire
Empire was in attendance on bent knee, and I believe the kings and queens of
the lands sent their scribes to immortalize this glorious day.

My Heart, My Life, My Soul for the Empire! In the distance thunder clapped as
angels must have been stricken from the sky. Knowing it would enhance my genius
mind, but even I did not know what to expect. I felt no pain, no blast of
energy, no cacophony of devils chanting. Instead suddenly the many bold ideas I
always had swirling in my head were pulled together into one focused thought,
so razor sharp it would have destroyed lesser men. The thought so powerful
others must have felt it's shockwave, I'm the Best around, no one will ever
hold me down. Nothing else would distract me from my course, my fist upraised,
frozen in my victory, I was now an Imperial Citizen and soon to be Emperor.

My first trip to my city, was a bit disappointing. They had no statues of me
prepared, though perhaps the local sculptors realized they could not truly
capture my beauty. I found the only decent tavern razed to the ground, which I
swore I would rectify some day. Though my mood cheered some as the BladeMaster
immediately recognized my glory, and promoted me from a mere citizen to a
Sheathed Blade moments after I entered the Palace. To celebrate I unsheathed my
"blade" for many a woman in the nearby village of Balator, I hear tell half the
nearby orphanage looks like me already. Those lucky bastards.

I continue my meteoric rise to Emperor, eclipsing all other Blades around me
but of course how could that surprise anyone. The War Master Zasowski, promoted
me to a full blade as soon as he witnessed me in glorious person. Then was wise
enough to slit his own throat to make room for The Zaan to take his place. For
now an usurper known as Sivyh has taken the throne, but he only keeps it warm
for me. After all, who wants some skulking shadowy type as Emperor? An Emperor
must be bold and handsome, a champion among men, and a conqueror of lands and
women, he must be Prevailing, and most importantly he must be Me!

Chapter 2

Zaanzorbarus Gloriatus was originally Zan Glor a prince of the small Empire
Thatos from the far west of Thera. The first born son of three, great
expectations were held for him. He was a wild and impulsive child from birth,
and spoiled rotten by his doting mother. He grew up with a fondness for music,
drink, and whores and not in that order. Much to his father's dismay he hung
about with the court musicians and jesters, and in Thatos the arts held a
special place among the people. He became quite a good musician, and that
coupled with his royal heritage made him an enormous celebrity at a young age.
His partying become a legend in the cities, but it started taking a nastier
twist when he began drinking absinthe and snorting the tiger blood flowers a
powerful drug. He become violent, paranoid, and a bit insane from it all,
losing his grip on reality and obsessing with his own greatness. He even
changed his name because he felt a great man needed a great big name. He went
on month long benders while his two brothers trained and studied. He became
involved in constant bar brawls, and some say much darker violence. They become
shining examples of what strong disciplined leaders could be, while Zaan's wild
ways made him a stain on the royal name. Eventually his saddened father
disowned him, almost unheard of and cut him off from his royal perks. Unable to
admit that he had destroyed his own life, he blamed his brothers. He wandered
aimlessly until he had reached Hamsah Mu'tazz, there he met an Imperial
Recuiter who spoke of an Empire where anyone could one day rise to be Emperor,
and best of all their Oath would bring order to even the most wild of minds.
Exactly what he would need to extract revenge on his family, and show them his
finer quality.

Chapter 1

I am Zaanzorbarus Gloriatus, the greatest man who has ever lived. The angels
wept at my birth into the royal family of the great nation of Thatos. The hope
of a millennia I was called, a god wrapped in mortal flesh and bestowed upon
the people of the world. The first and greatest of three princes, heir to the
throne of the unparalleled nation of Thatos. They say the Gods greatest
invention was Music, and I was the spring from which it flowed so sweet. As a
mere boy barely done suckling from my nurse maids breast I had mastered all the
instruments any man had ever heard. The people of Thatos worshipped me with
gifts of drink and the sweet smell of tiger blood, especially the ladies.
Though when you are a star among the heavens, there are many who would see you
fall back to the earth. My brothers and father, feared my greatness and used
their craftiness and plotting to almost vanquish my light. But fear not for I
am the Sun, and my heat burned them in its glory. Yet when you are a Dragon
among ants, there becomes little challenge in battle. I decided in my infinite
kindness to let them keep their paltry kingdom, I would stop blinding them with
my radiance and seek out my own Empire. So with my music to keep me company, I
left the women of Thatos weeping in the streets as I headed far away. I have
come upon a new Empire, that begs me to join their cause. With their Oath I can
have the one thing that would make me invincible. The discipline and order the
rest of my family used as such a mighty weapon, would be turned against them.
Oh yes the Zaan will Prevail!
