..\ I begin to grow weary of this existence. It is not the \
...\ feel of the wind through my hair, nor the taste of apples,\
....\ nor the smell of a rose, nor even the sordid carnal desire\
....| that I once enjoyed. No, I merely tire of the whole ordeal.|
....| One begins to wonder what it all means, when one has lived |
....| three lifetimes and sees no end in sight. /

../ Lord Reksah has forgotten me. I can hardly blame him. I /
./ would forget me, too. My ritual was a moderate success, /
.| revealing some of the history (or future?) of Arboria, and|
.| coating a small area in shadow for a very brief time. I |
.| might have realized more success if I had had more power, |
.| but only one of my fellow scholars within the Chasm even |
.\ showed his face. Two applicants did, and for their part, \
..\ they were granted entrance. \
...\ \
....\ At this point, I fear that none of my fellow scholars are \
.....\ truly that - we are a coven of murderers, and quite adept \
.....| at such. But the others do not learn from the murders they |
.....| issue forth. Perhaps some do. Perhaps some hope, as I do, |
.....| thought it has been long since I have gleaned any useful |
.....| information via the Method. |

...../ And yet I do still have reason for murder - not only in an /
..../ attempt to provide Lord Reksah with as many memories as I /
.../ can, but now, after a recent business transaction, to keep /
../ my own strength and vitality as plentiful as they can be. /

.| Davarrah, part of a group known as "the Coven", sold to me/
.| her knowledge of the Ritual of Canaballia. A corpse of an |
.| adventurer that is largely of my own making, much like one|
.| that is useful for the Method, may be ritualistically |
.| desecrated, and I feed from this. |

.\ I wonder if the time has come to renew my search for a way\
..\ to return to my own Age. Imagine a being with my current \
...\ power, ruling absolutely in the Age that I was first born \
....\ in. But why? Would that existence be any less wearisome? \
.....\ I have managed to glean the knowledge of how to do so via \
.....| the Method, in secret. I believe it is time to try. Time, |
.....| and Fate, will tell. |

....\ of overseeing the Scholars. What few there are. \

..../ ahead and bring in a fool here or a weakling there, but I /
.../ believe Lord Reksah already believes that I do not seem to/
../ intimidate those of the Chasm enough. /

.| Of relative interest is the recent Imperial interplay, as |
.| "the other" mummy, Cotzibue, apparently attempted to gain |
.| the throne via a coup and failed spectacularly. She is now|
.| marked as Anathema, and suddenly quite timid. Hah. Lohoq, |
.\ though...I've use for him. He holds the singular status of\
..\ someone who has ended me, alone, twice since I have gained\
...\ my new, powerful form. I brought him in rather quickly, as\
....\ he took on an assignment for me and was successful. \

.....| As to the others? Not worth my time, nor entrance into our |
.....| ranks. Zaanzorbarus has been welcomed back to the ranks of |
.....| the mindless Imperial Horde with open arms, and Farror has |
.....| not been seen for a very, very long time. |

...../ Lord Reksah was not very forthcoming on whether he can/will/
..../ confirm my findings about the Ritual that I have been doing/
.../ research via the Method on for so long. I continue to use /
../ the Method on fresh victims, and every sign points to that /
./ which I have already learned. Confirmation of a sort? We /

..\ Jallastan's death brought me many visions, all set within \
...\ the strange realm of Arboria. An interesting place. It is \
....\ seemingly outside of our plane of existence, yet one can \
....| teleport directly into it, or out, without use of the small|
....| portal in the High Tower of Sorcery. It has become quite |
....| clear that this unique locale should be the site of the /
.../ Ritual. /
../ /
./ Izolne's memories reinforced my conclusions about the site/
.| of Arboria - another elf, and more visions of the failure |
.| of the Silver Tower. Perhaps that tower is where we shall |
.| hold it - killing the dragon first, of course. That spot |
.| should offer a very good view of the surrounding area. |

..\ Oednyrr's memories revealed further incantations. Mzaffraa\
...\ revealed visions of corrupted Nature, perhaps indicating a\
....\ need for an item that represents such to be despoiled for \
.....\ the ritual. \

.....| The minotaur Wexaser showed visions of a grotesque minotaur|
.....| impregnation ceremony, wherein a human female was violated |
.....| by multiple bulls while unholy chanting took place in the |
.....| background. I am reticent to include such barbarism in any |
...../ ritual I preside over, but perhaps Lord Reksah may see the /
..../ matter with a better understanding. Perhaps it was merely /
.../ the chanting that was necessary. Or perhaps the intercourse/
../ need not be unwilling, nor end in the death of the female. /

.| Voas and Draughs fell in quick succession, and in their /
.| memories I saw multiple images of finality. A gravestone, |
.| the finishing line of a race, an empty dinner plate, a rod|
.| using its last magical charge and crumbling. I believe I |
.| have what is needed. |

..\ The Drillmaster's death was a difficult one to accomplish.\
...\ it required me to take the Head that he relies upon, and \
....\ then to chase him all across Thera. He finally fell dead \
....| in the shrine of his Lord, Daevryn, surely proving to the |
....| god that Olum was indeed a "diamond in the rough." Hah. |

.../ The Method proved quite successful, though I am unsure if /
../ useful toward the ritual we will perform. I saw images of /
./ Darkstone, mostly. I will have to see if Lord Reksah can /
.| discern whether something made of this material might be |
.| of use in our ritual, or if it serves only his ends. |

.| Next was Vinq, an Imperial Healer. The memories I gleaned |
.\ from his remains were flashes of unholy power. It is this \
..\ which leads me to believe an item with unholy properties \
...\ will be useful during the ritual. \

.....\ The Commander of the BattleRagers, Syther, was the next \
.....| victim with which I had success via the Method. In his mind|
.....| I saw a great deal of shadow, clearly due to his guildly |
.....| affiliation. I anticipate these shadowy memories, and most |
.....| especially the mystical incantations I heard in them, will |
.....| be quite useful. |

.../ brought images of reflecting sun and objects crafted of /

..\ And so it was that the Chancellor finally fell to old age.\
...\ The mantle of leadership was now squarely upon my skeletal\
....\ shoulders. Not that much had changed. Mharlndarn had given\
....| orders, yes. But leading? Hardly. |

....| And so I made it known to Lord Reksah that I did indeed /
.../ covet the position of Chancellor. He was...not exactly /
../ eager. My newfound power was obvious, but he seemed a bit /
./ hesitant. We shall see. Part of what I can likely do to /
.| prove my worth in the position is coming to fruition. I am|
.| endeavoring to use the Method to discern tidbits of detail|
.| on a ritual to bring more power to the Chasm and further |
.| our ends toward bringing forth the Eternal Night. |

..\ I've had no small amount of success. Perhaps having a more\
...\ specific goal has given me more insight with the Method. \
....\ A great many tidbits of memory have surfaced. They will be\
.....\ detailed in my next entries. \

.....| no doubt involve the sacrifice of a few famous, infamous, |

..\ The Conservator grinned at me again. This time, however, \
...\ I was not dreaming. I was about to, though. Or perhaps it \
....\ would be more apt to call it a nightmare, depending on \
....| one's perspective. |

....| As he pulled out a glass jar, I closed my eyes for the last|
..../ time and all went black. A dreamless sleep, and when I /
.../ woke? Perhaps the dream had simply started. The ritual was/
../ successful. I was wrapped in bandages. My flesh had begun /
./ to decay. Gummy tissue marked what had previously been my /
.| eyeballs, and I viewed the world without them. Nothing can|
.| block my unholy vision, now, it seems. Or perhaps nothing |
.| so far. |

..\ My new form is powerful. Magnificently so. And yet frail, \
...\ too - the divine burns my skeletal, gods-forsaken body, \
....\ while fire interacts with the formaldehyde and my bandages\
.....\ to cause excruciating pain as compared to before. Yet the \
.....| drawbacks are minor, and easily averted, in comparison to |
.....| the benefits. |

.....| Since my reawakening, I have attempted on several occasions|
.....| to use the Method upon my victims, with no success. Well, |
...../ none apparent to me, at any rate. Perhaps Lord Reksah is /
..../ able to glean some knowledge from the memories of those I /
.../ bring down. /

./ I wonder if Lord Reksah is, in fact, done with me now. Our /
.| agreement has come to fruition - he is invested within the/
.| pantheon, all he has promised to me (and more) is mine, so|
.| perhaps he no longer has use for me. He is not one to need|
.| insignificant mortals to sing his praises, after all. Not |
.\ that I ever did such. \

...\ We shall see. He has designs on who should lead the Chasm,\
....\ after all. And who can imagine what other schemes he has \
.....\ planned? Regardless, he has helped me to realize something\

..\ "So," I asked myself. "What to do?" \

....\ After several days of searching for Lord Reksah's aid with\
....| the Cleric who might teach me what I need to know to enter |
....| the undead state of the Lich, he had responded. He would be|
....| sequestering himself as he sought out the knowledge. Hmm. |

.../ I had assumed it would be a simple matter of Reksah, in /
../ in some way, strong-arming the Cleric into revealing its /
./ secrets to me. Foolishness. Such is not how my Lord works,/
.| nor would such tactics likely work on the Cleric, mad as |
.| it is. |

.\ The entire matter seems moot, at any rate. The night just \
..\ prior to receiving my Lord's response, I had a disturbing \
...\ and unusual dream. A dream which has lead me away from the\
....\ path of the Lich and down the path of the Mummy. \

.....| In the dream, I walked alone down a long aisle, as if in a |
.....| strange church. On benches on both sides of the aisle were |
.....| humans, minotaurs, dwarves and the like, as well as strange|
.....| creatures that I've never seen with my own eyes. They were |
.....| all pointing and laughing at me, or hurling epithets in a |
...../ harsh, guttural tongue. It was clear that there was a vast /
..../ amount of animosity here. /
.../ /
../ As I proceeded down the aisle, I looked down at myself. I /
./ wore the raiments of a bride(?) at a wedding, but was made /
.| purely of bone. In some part of my subconscious I knew my /
.| dream-self was a Lich. |

.| I began to feel weaker and weaker as I proceeded down the |
.\ aisle. I finally reached the altar, and my "groom" was my \
..\ own self. But in the bandages of a Mummy. Powerful and \
...\ impressive. My bride-self crumbled to dust, and I was \
....\ suddenly behind the eyes of my groom-self. I looked to the\
.....\ being who was officiating the "wedding", and it grinned. \

.....| It, too, was a Mummy. I now recognize the being as that who|
.....| calls itself the Conservator. |

.| moving the Mines of Moria up above Mount Olympus. All my |

....\ Thalos, and Midgaard? It is as if I have awakened in a \
.....\ foreign land. And yet some things are the same. There are \

.../ place or another, I am corrected by the denizens, who look/

Chapter 2

Tavlin was a powerful mage (just mage) during the First Age.
Nobody called it the First Age of course back then. He was
initiating a powerful ritual that he had been deceived about,
by an unknown agent of Shadow. The ritual would actually drain
him of all his power, granting it to the dark magi he had considered
his allies.

The ritual worked as intended, with a strange side effect. The
mages who had conspired against him could not locate his remains.
They assumed him completely disintegrated, shrugged, and went on
their way, content with their treacherous success.

Strangely, however, the ritual seemed to somehow connect, via
time, fate, and magic, to a similar ritual conducted recently
during the Fifth Age. That of the Vermin Queen Paraloiut.

It somehow drew a drained and bewildered Tavlin to this age, creating
quite a fish-out-of-water scenario.

Later role entries (as the character learns more of Fifth-Age Thera)
will detail his discoveries and plans. In general, the idea is for
him to figure out exactly what happened to him and seek to join Scion
for more power, more research ability, and perhaps find the trail of
the ritual that brought him to this time.

At that point he might decide to try to go back to the past for
vengeance, or decide to stay here as he regains some lost power, or
something else. We'll see where it leads.

..\ I suppose I should have known they would betray me. My own\
...\ desire for power, a trait so often found among humans, was\
....\ naturally my own undoing. Those of the Shadow were never \
.....\ terribly trustworthy, and my assumption that they would \
.....| see it as a profitable enterprise for themselves as well. |

...../ Foolishness. The color of my skin has often been a point /
..../ of trouble for me - racists seem more prevalent amongst we/
.../ humans, perhaps due to our own variance of height and of /
../ coloration - though one would expect quite the opposite. /
./ Yet the fact that the agents of Shadow who approached me /
.| shared my skin color put me at ease. Idiot. |

.\ Perhaps I was not betrayed. How then, to explain the utter\
..\ and complete failure of the ritual? The ritual that I was \
...\ guaranteed would not fail? I have learned little, but I do\
....\ feel certain that the Shadow cabal is dust. So perhaps I \
.....\ have managed the last laugh indeed. I may outlast them by \
......\ default. I can rebuild my power. \

.......| new cabal deals with nightwalkers, as the Shadows did. Not|

......./ us gifted in the Art. Apparently one of these "Scions" had/
....../ performed a ritual. I've only rudimentary understandings, /
...../ but it sounds vaguely familiar to the one I conducted. /

.../ I have managed to inject myself into that organization - /
../ I am to observe quietly and keep a low profile, and report/
./ to a strange being whose name I do not know. And if asked /
.| how I came to be a Scion, I am to present a magnificently |
.| tailored lie. It won't be a problem. We humans can lie as |
.\ well as dark-elves. And I am, after all, only human. \

..\ I am now Advisor to the Chancellor. For what it is worth. \
...\ I've met the Chancellor once, now. A dark-elf of few words\
....\ who seems as mad as I likely am. Much more interesting, \
.....\ though, is the 'Spirit'. A witty play on words, he/it says\
.....| when I call it that. It intrigues me. |
.....| |
...../ It claims that I am more interesting than others of the /
..../ guild I've associated myself with - necromancy. I'm not /
.../ entirely sure if that is a comforting fact or not. At any /
../ rate, the fact remains that this being and I have made a /
./ pact of sorts. My end seems easy - don't make it start all/
.| over with some other necromancer. I.e. do not take my own |
.| life in despair, or return to my own time. My own Age. |

..\ And what of that? Would I want to now, if I had the means?\
...\ I told the spirit no - an obvious choice - but perhaps it \
....\ was the truth. This new Age is different and at times it \
.....\ seems intolerable, and yet there are incredible advantages\
......\ here, and now. And after all, Fate may have had a hand in \
.......\ my circumstance, and who am I to argue that? \

.......| The spirit has taught me a very interesting technique, used|
.......| on a fresh victim's remains. He calls it the Method. I find|
......./ myself able to perceive bits and pieces of the memories /
....../ and knowledge of the recently slain - but only those I've /
...../ had a hand in slaying - and the results are interesting. /

.../ The most recent revelation lead me to the Underdark, where/
../ I learned about Darkstone, a mineral which apparently is /
./ translucent in complete darkness, but opaque when exposed /
.| to light. I'm not sure where this information will lead, |
.| but I've discerned a general location of a large deposit |
.\ of it. I wonder if the Spirit will be interested in such. \

..\ I had nearly decided that I imagined it all, so long had \
...\ it been since the Method had actually been successful. I'd\
....\ decided perhaps I truly was mad. \

.....| But then the most unlikely remains gave me the most useful |
.....| memories I'd gathered in some time. The corpse of Sihen, in|
...../ the form of a bullfrog, yielded secrets I'm certain Sihen /
..../ had no conscious knowledge of. The visions guided me to a /
.../ swamp, Ysigrath, where I was able to strong-arm one of the/
../ primitives into telling me of a ritual that happened there/
./ years ago. /

.| After hearing him recount the tale, I believe more firmly |
.\ than ever that this ritual is somehow the one that brought\
..\ me to this Age. This ritual and mine, of course. One item \
...\ of note was the mention of a being called a para'orcwalker\
....\ somehow being created as well. Perhaps finding this being \
.....\ will lead me to more information. \

.......\ I killed the primitive, of course, once he was of no more \
.......| use. First, in case he might be raised from the dead, I |
.......| used my magic to make him face the fear of death and forget|
.......| it all. There shall be none beside me and those I choose |
......./ who shall gain this knowledge. /

...../ As to other items, I have begun thinking about my own lack/
..../ of assurance of the future. In short, I begin to fear my /
.../ eventual demise. While the failed ritual did restore my /
../ youth as promised (in addition to the side-effects), I now/
./ grow old once more. I have heard of ways to defeat age via/
.| the rituals of my guild, and researched them. I will have |
.| to attempt one of these rituals. But which? That is the |

...\ by those who kept their faces masked or hidden in shadows.\
....\ None knew who it might be, but rumor and vague inaccuracy \

.....| I knew, though. I alone knew his name and what he was, to |
...../ some small degree, at any rate. I no longer think of the /
..../ so-called First Age as "my age." No, it has become clear /
.../ to me that this time, this place - these are where I was /
../ fated to be. As the herald of this new diety. /

.| I am the First of Reksah. |

.\ But what shall this mean, then, for me? Already I enjoy \
..\ power - not mystical might, not to the extreme I once had,\
...\ but power nonetheless - commanding scholars and others to \
....\ do as I will, using persuasion on those who would refuse a\
.....\ command...even with all of my mystical power before, I was\
......\ not a leader in any sense of the word. Now I seem to be. \

.......| My Lord - for that is what I shall consider Reksah, now - |
.......| bade me to search the memories of Underdark denizens for |
.......| information on Darkstone, and to find two who may be worthy|
......./ to meet him. I have done both, and provided a sacrifice, /
....../ to supply an unmarred and unliving body for him to use. /

..../ In return, I have been granted many things, but one final /
.../ step must yet be taken. I must seek the unlife myself. I /
../ will seek the Becoming, and endeavor to transform my aging/
./ form into that of the mighty Lich. /

.| Lord Reksah has inferred that he might offer some aid in |
.\ this, insofar as helping convince those with answers on \
..\ the particulars of the ritual to share them with me. We \
