She unrolled a thick piece of parchment and conjuring a brush from the folds
of her silk, she began to brush with fierce strokes. I watched in amazement
my mouth slightly agape at the beauty in her calligraphy. She not only weaved
words of importance but also art. If one was to read the strokes they would
instantly know the depths of the Neerja who constructed them. Powerful, wild
yet calm, beautiful and well beyond exotic; she noticed my concentrated eye
on her and looked up at me with a look of dismay. *Do you study me or study
what I teach? For shame child, you have already mastered the art of looking
from the day your eyes opened and captured the first glimpse of Theras
beauty.* Now she said tapping her brush upon the parchment, do you monitor
the strokes. *Remember them well* she began for the High Herald wishes upon
you to embrace his company and construct a picture of art that is formed with
words. I proceeded to nod furiously, never opening my mouth to speak. For as
much beauty she held, it was rivaled by a dominant personality that often
left me lost for words. Quite ironic for one who was praised moreso for their
voice than any other talent.

Chapter 1

I am all, all am I
Balance is with me even as I speak.
I remember well the moment I uttered these words to the Neerja before me.
She as all those before us was a sight of beauty, a guardian of balance.
Before her eyes I felt my existence eclipsed.
If I was told years before that I was to be the one to take her place, I
would quickly call you an utter fool.
And that birth surely chose the wrong one.
She on the other hand would have different words to say. That the lotus pool
never lied, that you are who you are for reason, and not to forsake such.
That my very name *Savarna* implemented such, translating to city dialect
into the daughter of the ocean.I shook off the thought as the Neerja before
my eyes commanded my attention with a flick of her wrist. We were to sit now,
and with a bit of a mechanical undertone I did such. Our eyes locked a
moment, sapphire to emerald before I looked down at her hands working busily.
She was teaching me another talent. One that I may add to my vastly growing
list, all thanks to her; she was crushing berries of different vibrant
shades, mixing them well with a lizard bone and working them into a liquid
paste that she would utilize to draft calligraphy. These talents, if you
will were a main part of the work of a Neerja, as alluring to mortals as gold
was to a thief. Within my tribe one with talent held power, and one with
power was wished upon. A Neerja was one who exemplified mastery in the
talents at her disposal and utilized them to heal the less fortunate. Mortals
often called upon them as courtesans, but we knew better we knew ourselves-
as healers.
