Chapter 6

As his body failed him and his life dwindled, Gurzgred looked back on his
life. He had achieved great success recently, and now bore Padwei's mark. He
was desert born, and he had always felt a strong kinship to Padwei's tales of
the red hunters and the Nyaed. He was very pleased to bear her mark, and it
was a constant reminder to truly live life, and not just fight a war.

That said, it brings about conflict, and enjoying the small things can be
hard for Gurzgred. His years have hardened him and he is a grim, jaded dwarf
most of the time, dulled to the pain and tempering his emotions as he marches
on, his life, as he has always dedicated it to being, a soldier. He takes
solace in the few he gives the sacred dwarven title of a true friend. Padwei,
Rhone, Nevaelle. He can always seem to, briefly, forget the trials of his
life around them.

As his days became truly numbered, he was presented with a task to prolong
his life, and he set about vigorously fulfilling the task, successfully
acquiring all the items he was asked to for the procedure. Upon delivering
them to Padwei, he was given a rather hard choice: Bear the mantle of the
Maran and not have his life extended, or have his life extended and likely
never bear the mantle of the Maran.

With a very, very heavy heart, Gurzgred chose to have his life extended. He
had dedicated his life to this, and though he wanted a great deal to prove
himself worthy of being a Maran and had once harbored hopes of even being the
Captain once again, he knew that those wishes and wants could not take over
his choice. He knew that the longer he lived and served the light, the
better. At times he does feel a bit slighted, being called Maran by others
and the insistence of those who know him that he is a Maran to them does
little but rub salt in the wound that he is not worthy.

Chapter 5

is a hardened dwarf at this point, spending years as a pleasure
slave to Borkahd is trying on even the most valiant of souls. Gurzgred is not
proud of how he handled his burden, he was less than graceful at times and
far less than graceful at other times. However his planning with Nnaeshuk,
Sollin, and Padwei came to fruition at an opportune time as Gurzgred's hope
and endurance could not last much longer.

Saved, broken from the chains that held him, Gurzgred is renewed and
rejuvenated. His dedication, stalwart as always has been reinforced and he
marches with new vigor and a fresh spring in his step. He's grown in another
beard, having been redeemed and that alone has made him a much happier soul.
Though he has lost something, from these ordeals. They've taken something
that only a lifetime of war and years of all-but-hopeless imprisonment can
take from a man.

So Gurzgred, an invigorated dwarf, marches on looking to redeem himself
further and prove himself worthy of the positions he once held as Maran and
Captain.

Chapter 4

Gurzgred is beardless. The ultimate shaming of a dwarf, and well deserved
after he recklessly gambled away the lives of the pure. Though he still
marches on in the War for the Light he has asked to be relieved of being
Captain and Maran, serving as a Squire until he redeems himself.

Nevaelle ended up taking part of his burden and sacrificing her Purity to
Borkahd to right Gurzgred's wrong. However, Gurzgred was not pleased with
another serving a sentence he felt that only he should serve and thus took
Nevaelle's place for the remainder of her sentence to him. To add insult to
injury Borkahd's 'freeing' the elves was killing them. At the very least,
their suffering will therefore not be eternal.

The raucous demeanor is gone from Gurzgred, for now. Perhaps in time as he
redeems himself it will come back. Instead he is almost even more reckless. A
cold, resigned sort. He has lost something of himself in this ordeal and only
time will tell if he will gain it back.

Chapter 3

Gurzgred often becomes anxious though, when there were not many to hunt. One
defining moment in his life came during one of these times. He saw the
tyrannical giant slavemaster, Borkahd, in the heavens and challenged him to a
duel in the Arena, in an effort to champion the Light.

Borkahd accepted the challenge but told Gurzgred that if Gurzgred lost,
Borkahd was taking twenty elven slaves, and if Gurzgred won, Borkahd would
set free twenty elven slaves.

Not happy with the burden of the elves on him, but seeing no way out of it
besides fighting, Gurzgred strapped on his maces and fought valiantly against
Borkahd. It was close, as far as those things go, but Borkahd bested Gurzgred
and in a rare act of respect vowed only to take five slaves. This was not
enough for Gurzgred, and he was determined to champion their freedom. He
wanted a rematch, and the slaves to go free if he won. Borkahd accepted, but
cautioned that if he won again, more slaves would be taken to his harem.

Sadly, this fight was not as close as the first and Gurzgred was against sent
to lick his wounds while the gloating fire giant left to celebrate, the
elves' champion broken on the ground of the Arena. Gurzgred was and is very
upset that he failed to champion the elves and feels that he is partially
responsible for their fate. He took out one hundred and twenty five gold from
his wealth and gave it to King Adrianor of Darsylon to distribute to the
slaves' families for their loss, but Gurzgred knows this is not enough.

He plans to try to speak to those stronger than he, and arrange a
prison-break onto Borkahd's harem for the elves.

Chapter 2

He stumbled into Hamsah Mu'tazz after a few days wandering the desert and
made his home there. He became very distressed by all of the wicked he saw.
Imperials from the north, Scions from the south, fire giant raiders from the
east, brawls leaving innocents dead to the west, and Scarabaeus lording over
the city in the most vile of fashions. He took to heavy drinking of the
desert drink, arak, to help cope with the wicked he saw.

However, drinking only helps so much, and after becoming a rather adept bar
brawler he realized that fighting may hold the key to making a difference. He
enrolled in the warrior's guild, and decided to dedicate his life solely and
completely to the annihiliation of the wicked.

Time verily flew by and soon he was in the Fortress, killing the wicked was
something he was somewhat proficient at. After a bit of time training as a
squire, a few notable things happened.

First, he met Padwei. Padwei became very influential and someone he looked up
to a lot. She reminded him that there was more then just the war, and saved
him from becoming so enamored with the war that he forgot to live life and
cherish the small moments of respite. Though he was not religious, he has
taken an interest in learning more of Padwei's faith, as it has made him a
much happier dwarf and his visits to her always rejuvenate him and teach him
more of both himself and others.

Then, he met Adekar and was found fitting of becoming a Maran. Adekar had the
aura of someone that knows more than he appears, and watches when you think
he does not. This made Gurzgred happy, he knew that Adekar was taking note
and he redoubled his efforts to be a good Maran. Not long after, Adekar
pulled him aside and with the same stern, grim approval approached Gurzgred
with becoming Captain. Something that Gurzgred was a bit nervous about, but
accepted. Padwei helped soothe his nerves and now Gurzgred embraces the
position.

Finally, he met Nnaeshuk, who encouraged, supported, and bolstered Gurzgred's
confidence. Knowing that Nnaeshuk was once Captain and approved of him did a
lot for Gurzgred and he was very thankful to Nnaeshuk for all that he did. He
also engaged Nnaeshuk in friendly combat in the Arena, and much to his
surprise, was victorious.

Chapter 1

Gurzgred Gredgurd.

He was born and raised in the desert of the Araile, the son of a traveling
dwarven couple. The father, a master smith, and the mother an average one.
The good nomads of the Desert were very hospitable to them and paid well for
the dwarven forged steel. After all, the desert was full of threats.
Talshidar, shadowy beasts in the night, chaos runners from the sands to the
west. All of these things were very real threats to the nomads, and the
dwarven forged steel was a crucial tool to fend off the threats.

When the Talshidar noticed where the nomads were getting their steel, they
concocted a plan and stole into the village at night with the sole intent of
capturing the dwarven family and forcing them to forge for the Talshidar.

And so, nightfall came and the Talshidar bore down, concentrated solely upon
the Forge and the dwarven abode next to it. Gurzgred, pushed under the bed in
the beginning of the fight, only saw as the Talshidar broke upon his parents
like waves upon a shore. Though they defended valiantly, and nearly held off
until nomad reinforcements arrive, Gurzgred's father was seized and taken
away, while his mother was knocked unconscious onto the floor. But his father
would not be enslaved. Halfway up the mountain, held onto by his beard, he
took a knife from his boot and sawed his beard off, falling to death's
embrace.

Life was much harder for the Gredgurd family then. His mother was a fine
enough smith, but not good enough to support both of them alone. To save her
from poverty, Gurzgred decided to venture off alone.
