Chapter 6

In the name of study and adventure, I accepted the invitation of Cinndria
and some associates of mine within the Empire to delve into the mysteries
of the Inferno, and if I am lucky, glean some new understanding of transmutation
from the explorations and experimenting upon the inhabitants of the various circles.
You who are reading this give some meaning to my journey, for at least some little bit
of what I have learned has survived.

I am now standing at the Entrance to the Fifth Circle. Understand that we sprinted a
gauntlet to reach where we are, and so I do not profess to have seen overmuch, but
I have learned that spells can effect the forms of even these devils, although spells
that require a metabolism do not. Other beings, like the mephits and these hellish
looking beasts, actually have a metabolism and so are subject to a wider degree of
alteration.

The way here was fraught with fierce devils, aggressive mephits, passive shades,
and licentious souls whose lives led them down a path of damnation. As I am
presently trapped here, I cannot help but reflect that my own lust to master my
art may damn me, but I will maintain my search.

I will stay here for a time, practicing spells, looking for some new insight
technique or application.

Chapter 5

I have concluded the preliminary steps of my field work, having attained
rudimentary skills in merging physical alteration with extra-planar theory.
For the most part my efforts have been to benign effect, although I have
discovered that accelerating someone fighting someone else is a splendid
way to bring about their death, and felars do not wholly appreciate having
gills grafted onto their person. I intend to perform similiar experiments
on the hostile warrior-descendants of those who once served the Order mages
of old, but it has been amply demonstrated my present facility with my
acquired skills is yet inadequate.

My research regarding the Biomancer and Creator has not been fruitful since
my last journal entry. My interviews have proven fruitless with all parties
I have discussed them with, and I have found no new written or material
record of their existence. The only interesting thing is that I believe I
understand how a Vivimancer and the Biomancer are different; the former
focuses not on life magic, but the application of positive magics on
living things. The Sz'sra, however, is reported to understand (and
likely utilizes this understanding) the concept of Weh, which would likely
entail the application of negative energies as well.

No additional sign from the hidden figure. I keep looking and listening.

Chapter 4

After glancing at a map of the outlands, I realized that I had not yet
made journey to Hillcrest, where I met with Mistress Juxposnina, a gnome
whose power lies in start contrast to her stature. I spoke with Vorondel
Estelias, who explained that a vivimancer focuses upon the "positive,
life-giving forces of our magics" before lifting her nose as elves are
wont to do.

As I returned to the Inn of the Eternal Star after my long explorations,
a voice spoke from beyond my sight: "I cannot begin to fathom why you
would waste my talents, apprentice." No word was uttered thereafter by
this unseen entity, motivating me to study harder. Who claims me as an
apprentice? Lilyboat, still?

All mysteries have answers.

Chapter 3

I have looked through the tomes and scrolls of the Lyceum for the
art of vivimancy, but in my initial search I found nothing of the sort
in the standard collections. There was a paragraph within the theology
section suggesting it was a branch with advanced healing skills, and a
conversation with the an historian, Lasentia Silvermoon, revealed the
name of a priest to Rayihn named Calbaseeti. The latter possessed the
ability to infuse her followers with remarkable regenerative abilities.
Another denizen of the Inn and Lyceum, a bard by the name of Saea, had
precious little to add. Should I see the High Herald, I will query him.

One of the first texts I read mentioned an art known as biomancy. Given
the prefix's morphological relation to 'life', I read about a saurian
transmuter called Sz'sra, the Biomancer, and a rival of Sz'sra known as
the Creator . The practice of Sz'sra (translated as
'wielder of life') seems to be highly influenced by the ideology of the
K'sra (for more information, see the Cultures section, topic Saurians)
whereas the Creator's path appears to have involved fusing the living with
parts of the dead (see Saugash, below). The Biomancer and the Creator
were embroiled in the politics of the Masters; the Creator appears to
have persuaded the Masters to turn on Sz'sra, but the biomancer was able
to thwart the para-elementals sent after him in a battle on or near
present-day Arkham. Sz'sra and Ssithra are said to have studied under
the druid Ssiselus. Ssithra is purported to having had a dream wherein
Sz'sra sought an identified power that would enable him to destroy the
Creator. (Culture Section, Topic: Saurian Appendix)

The Saugash were formed when the body parts of dead sorcerers were
joined with living subjects to enpower the host, becoming some manner of
free-willed creation not entirely dissimilar to the sentient undead.
Interestingly, the Saugash used runic magic, and they apparently chased
after the biomancer, questioning those they found, and were seen in
Darsylon, Easthaven, Spiderhaunt woods, and parts of Galadon. The authors
Arvam and Proserpina speculate that they feared that the biomancer had
or might one day possess the means to destroy the Creator, and with him,
all his creations.

I have yet to learn the precise differences between vivimancy and biomancy,
but they and the studies of Creator, whatever they might be called, are
areas of transmutation now holding serious interest to me.

Chapter 2

My first step in finding a suitable master has been to catalog
known teachers of the art of transmutation. Preliminary results
are as follows:

I found no instructors in Udgaard, Akan, Dagdan, or Darien.

* Mr Estelias is a self-proclaimed vivimancer. I recognize the allusion
to life magic, but I do not recognize how it is different from the precepts
common to all transmuters. This is an area worthy of further research.

** The transmutation guildmaster in Hamsah Mutazz is not known to me, but
his offices have a convenient access to the library, which would be
convenient for vicarious research.

Chapter 1

Date: 18th of the Month of Shadows in the year 317 of Our Lord

I have just fulfilled my terms with Ildreth Lilyboat. It might scarcely be
considered an apprenticeship, as the gnome was inclined to replacing his
natural form, whereas my interest lies in augmentation and alteration.
We part on cordial terms but separate paths.

I find myself now on a quest for lore new to me. I will begin my search
in a broad survey of the lands, looking to gather knowledge of the craft
and the best of its practitioners, and in my journal I will record something
of my discoveries.
