Chapter 2

I knew that when the Watcher first spoke to me my life was going to change
even more than it already had. I stood by his side as he questioned me about
the importance and duties of leadership in the Fortress of the Light. I
reflected back on those who had come and gone while I was a Squire, and later
Maran. The only one who had taken the mantle of leadership with any sort of
passion to me was Nnaeshuk, and he had long since risen to Asgaard and led
armies of the Light against the wicked with frequency now. I reflected in
that moment on everything that had led to this point. Mostly a lot of
bleeding. Whether it was them, or me, I threw myself into battle constantly,
against odds both fair and overwhelming. I fell a lot, but I rose back up
each time wiser than the last. My enemies constantly jeer and jabber about
this and that from relying on others to get where I am to the type of outfit
I wear into war. I suppose in a way thats almost complimentary. I promised
the Watcher that I would do my best to see the Fortress lead in the right
direction, and not just to be another body with a fancy title.

I've come so far since first meeting the Lady Baerinika in her ruins. I had a
firm resolve to my path then, but I still felt the fear. What I've found,
over the years, is that with experience the fear turns to inspiration. I
don't feel terrified, but challenged. I don't see death at the hands of my
enemies, I see failure to succeed. When you lose the fear of dying, you gain
a great clarity of each battle, of each risk and moment. Lately I have felt a
burning desire to purge the land fully of the wicked. Not as a one man army,
but as unifier. A leader bent on showing others how they too can pick up
weapons and fight. I will lead through example, taking up my sword against
the wicked with new found vigor and righteous fury. I have had many
conversations of redemption with those of the Light. And like my Lady I
believe that the choices the wicked have made have led them to their fate,
they have a free will and every moment they live to do evil is another moment
someone is hurt. I will be their redeemer, and their redemption will come in
blood.

Chapter 1

He doesn't want to be a town guard anymore.

They swept past him at the East Gate, dark mages and their demons and undead
servants, shadow-fiends. They didnt even pause as they strolled past him,
hatred burning in their eyes. They all had their own purposes during the
raid. Kemrin gave them no trouble, he was no threat to their malevolent
power. From the moment the gate burst inward everything but his heart and his
mind froze, each muscle and tendon locked tighter than any cage, his eyes
grew wide, his breathing halted, his heart boomed in his chest. He prayed
that the dark-fiends didnt look in his direction or notice him standing
there.

Those who say fear cannot kill people are wrong. People died in his village
that night. Good, innocent people. Guards, townsmen, and merchants alike in
the fires and explosions, cloven by axe and sword. Where was Kemrin? He
stood, still as a statue, trying to melt into the stone wall he slumped
against, paralyzed with terror. That disgrace of a guard, it was his job, his
duty, to die with the others, to protect the people.

He is a long way from that moment now. Far beyond the time of raw terror,
though it haunts him still. The evil beings took the holy relic from the
chapel, left all for dead, and vanished into the night. Kemrin gave weak
excuses as he gathered the survivors, saying that he was taken out at the
gate upon their arrival, but he knew the truth. He was ashamed of himself.
And yet, he is resolute and has a true purpose now.

He is much more than he was. He has taken the Oaths of the Code. He is a
Paladin now. He doesnt just guard one village, he guards the entirety of
Thera. He protects the populace by slaying the monsters, making the innocent
feel safe in their homes, cities, and fields. He doesnt just attempt to keep
danger and fear from their lives, but he wishes to inspire courage! If he is
able to vanquish great demons and dark-hearted beings with naught but his
sword and the power of his Goddess, will that not spur others of the Light to
join with him in the crusade? To bravely face any challenge or battle? To
take the fear of dark powers and death, and transform it into the energy
needed to drive their blades onward, instead of freezing slumped against a
stone wall like he did?

Kemrin will fight, now. No one else, no innocents, no other warrior will have
to fight double for his absence: he will sacrifice his own life before
another is forced to.

He doesn't want to be a town guard anymore.
