|
Mellaithdon Haeeth the Champion of the Virtues
DescriptionAn elven male, the lean form this man's frame suggests a life of martial training and lifestyle. His hair is held in place by a leather strip bundling it together at his neck, where pale yellow locks fall from there to the middle of his shoulders. His skin is tanned where exposed, but when you see it at openings in his clothing the contrast shows that he is naturally pale in complexion. His clothes are simple and functional in nature. Heavy boots for life of travel, layers of clothing to suit any type of weather, and little in the way of color or gaudiness.

RoleChapter 8 Another Letter, Written and then Set to Flame Added Tue Apr 27 17:43:05 2010 at level 39:Hello again father,
Things progress well in my efforts. I have become noteworthy enough in my actions that many know me not only by my given name, but also our family name, and I now hear those that I have never met speaking of me as a Haeeth.
I see myself as more than only an example to others now. I still strive to show others that avoiding the trials laid out for them is at their loss, and that they will not be prepared for others that are still coming. I also have begun to do more to speak to other of this, and where I think it is needed, intervening in their trials to ensure they are finding the benefits that come with them.
There was one youthful warrior that I came upon that I did not interfere with, that has since changed me. He was engaged in combat with a wicked foe that was clearly his better in combat, but he stood his ground well when I chanced upon them. He was preparing to withdraw when he saw me, which I would have deemed a wise decision, however he knew me as a paladin, though I did not know him, and expecting me to support him he stayed to fight instead of making his retreat and was soon defeated.
Making his way back and withering under the remarks of the foe before they sauntered off, the youth turned a pained look on me, and questioned why I did not aid him. I told him that I was not one that would deny him his own trials, and attempted to point out that there was much to be gained by him from what had happened, but he would hear none of it. He was quite downtrodden and even as I was speaking to him of what he could learn, the fire within his heart that would burn all the more fiercely, he looked on me once again with a a now empty gaze and took his own life for all eternity.
I thought much of that day since, and have seen now that at times some will not find the preparation that they find in one trial to be used for their next unless they are nudged in the right direction. At times I know that this keeps them from realizing the potential that they have from the given challenge that they faced, but it also enables them to at least find some of it, instead of clouding their eyes from it completely. I do often stay my hand, and leave them to their own devices as it should be, but I feel that the aid I have given in prayers and setting of bones has helped others find their way to being able to stand alone as well.
As an aside, Nimthriel, you are still in my heart, and my mind at all times. I remain steadfast in my promise to you, though it was all taken from us, and will never falter in my efforts to earn the moment that our souls meet again.
Yours,
Mellaithdon

RoleChapter 7 Smoke From a Burned Letter Added Wed Mar 31 07:38:31 2010 at level 30:Father,
Since the dreams have stopped, it seems odd to me in a way that although they were painful I miss the clarity with which I was able to see your face, not to mention dear Nimthriel's.
Even knowing you were dead, the dreams made it seem as if you were still with me, (although it does seem that in fact you were, trying to show me that I must move on) but without them now I am not sure how you share my feelings with you, so I will write them down, and trust that they will find their way to you.
In the final dream, you told me to find one who could teach me more of finding strength in what pains me, and I after some heavy searching I have found them. Thror HammerSong. Yes, a dwarven patron and dwarf himself, though my ignorance these stout folk has lessened and I have been given an approving nod of the Hammersong. To quote some of his words, although it seems to lose some meaning without his gruff and dwarven tongue, "Temperance is putting yourself in the thickest of fires, and coming out a different person." There were other things he said, some of which I hope do not come to fruition, but these still ring in my ears as I thought back to the day that I lost you, and although it took me some good amount of time I not only came out a different person, I see that I have come out with purpose.
You can rest assured where you are now, that the trials I face without you now will only make me stronger, and my purpose now is to continue on with this, and also do as you did for me and help others find this as well, whether they are willing or not in many cases.
I believe I will be a part of the Fortress of Light soon. I think it will be a good place for my example to show others what you showed me, and also be a place that I can bring trials on the dark hearts of this world as well, so that they can learn to forge themselves anew and for the better.
Additionally, I have continued as you taught me, to focus on my training, which includes working hard on the proper ways to commune with HammerSong as I invoke the prayers he has allowed me to call on.
Signing the letter quickly, Mellaithdon looked at for a moment, then leaned toward the fire, setting alight a corner of the parchment. Holding it before him, he let he fire consume the paper until he could no longer keep hold of it and tossed it into the breeze, watching the smoke drift away to bring his message those he had not seen since the dreams had faded.

RoleChapter 6 A New, Final Dream Added Sat Mar 20 14:35:36 2010 at level 5:The final dream was a new one. And he was surprised to find himself in a similar state of the other ones, but this time there was nothing to witness. Only the dream state, and nothingness all around him. Trying to figure out what he needed to see here to complete this dream, he froze mid-turn when he saw an image of his father standing before him, not an image of a memory to re-live, but an image that was looking back at him just as he was looking at it.
"Father?" He asked, though he was not sure if he could talk in the dream state, but it seemed to pass his lips just as it would in the waking world.
"Hello my son, I am not sure how long we have, so we must be brief."
"Is it you? Truly?"
"There is no time for that, just listen.
You risk losing yourself by dwelling on what happened. The purity you still have within you dies more each day that you let the agony of loss consume you. What happened was not your fault, but if you find the strength to accept it as what it is, then you can see that your life is still before you, and although you cannot change the past, you can still make things right."
"Accept it for what it is? Make things right? I don't understand."
"A challenge is was it was, one that you defeated in part by surviving, but one that you still face because you are letting it stop you from living. Take control of what you have and forget about what you have lost. You can learn from what happened, overcome it, and it will make you stronger. Then you can use that to strike back at the wicked and teach others to face challenges like you have, so that they are prepared to face them. I protected you, and I see now that I was wrong to have done so, because you were nearly not strong enough to overcome this challenge. I only hope that I have been able to see the mistake in time. You should embrace this, and follow the teachings of those that can guide you better than I could have. Find strength in your trials, not loss."
"I still do not understand. Follow whose teachings? What am I do do?"
"I trained you as a warrior, but you are meant for more than that I think. A holy warrior, one that others can learn from and find how to face their own trails. Lead by example. Be to others what I failed to be for you."
The dream fading away, Mellaithdon awoke to the sun just beginning to emerge over the horizon. Questions still left unanswered, he looked within himself and heeded his father's words to find what he gained in the outcome of what he dreamed of instead of what he lost.
Breaking camp a short time later, he set out for the first time in a long time having a purpose. He was going to go to the academy, and learn to be not just a warrior, but a holy warrior, and find someone that could teach him to face challenged head-on, and see the strength from those challenges instead of the loss.

RoleChapter 5 After the Dreams Added Sat Mar 20 14:31:08 2010 at level 5:Bolting upright in his camp, Mellaithdon held his scarred stomach from the remembered pain and he felt tears on his face. Enraged at the memories of what happened, he screamed into the night air and sat there sobbing.
In past experiences, there were no more dreams. Only resurfaced sorrow and listless wandering as the young elf searched the land for meaning and direction in what he would do with himself after the world he knew was taken from him. He'd continued to train, as his father had taught him, but he felt empty inside. It had been seven years since he'd lost his family, his love, and his friend, and the scars on his flesh paled in comparison to the scars that could not be seen. He searched the land for answers since that day, but after each day's passing all he had to show for it were painful memories that would not fade.
Wiping tears from his eyes, he looked to the east where the sky was beginning to hint at dawns coming and decided if he were going to find a way to make it through the next day, he would need some sort of rest to do so and lay back down.

RoleChapter 4 Third Dream Added Sat Mar 20 14:30:00 2010 at level 5:As much as he dreaded what he would see next, sleep pulled him back in quickly and the next dream came instantly. He looked upon himself, but he still felt as if he were living it as well. He was weak, and in pain, but could not tell why. His ears were ringing, and he was starting to realize that the pain he felt was throbbing from his stomach. Reaching under his tunic, he gasped as his fingers not only found blood, but a deep cut only barely leaving enough of his abdomen muscles intact to keep him from being disemboweled. In shock, he reached to where Nimthriel was laying to rouse her from sleep to go and get help and realize that something was wrong with her as well. Pulling her arm to turn his love toward him, his head spun and he choked back a cry as his were met with the empty stare of a corpse. He numbly pulled back the ragged blanket the remote tavern had provided them when they took this room and the one his father and Hirnaeranin were sharing, and finally let loose a scream of despair as he saw that her lovely neck was covered with blood and her throat had been clearly slit.
Stumbling backwards out of the bed, something still kept his body from reacting normally. His legs shook and he could not stand straight, wobbling back and forth as he bumped into the wall behind him. Holding his head he tried to figure out what was going on, and he remembered the travelers that had come into the common room and talked the owner into allowing them to break open a cask of ale that they had brought with them to share with everyone. They had only taken some to be polite, but even with a few drinks they had all started to lose interest in talking and turned in early. Assuming they must have been drugged, he pushed off the wall and stumbled to the door that was already partly open.
Swinging the door full open, he realized that his eyes were watering and his lungs burned from the smoke in the air and he saw everything was ablaze from the direction of the common room. Dropping to a knee, he looked the opposite direction for the others rooms. One door there was open and his father lay in the doorway with his sword in hand. Scrambling to his side, he grimaced in mourning as he saw the hilt of a dagger standing out from his father's chest. Checking for life he sobbed to find he was too late, and saw Hirnaeranin's body hanging partly out of the bed with his stomach more thoroughly opened up than the wounds he himself had taken.
Growing weaker, Mellaithdon laid a hand on his father's chest in sorrow and wished that he might have looked closer on the face of Nimthriel before leaving her side, but knew that his time was fleeting. Still crawling he made his way to the hallway window which was already broken open. Lurching out the opening, he fell, and the dream ended as his felt himself black out as he hit the ground some eight feet below.

RoleChapter 3 Second Dream Added Sat Mar 20 14:28:06 2010 at level 5:Waking from the first dream, Mellaithdon remember it entirely this time, which experience had told him was what was needed for him to move on to the next each time, so that he could finish them all and get true rest when he slept. Closing his eyes so that he could continue, he began to drift off again quickly.
The second dream took place several years after the first, but again took place in the training grounds with Hirnaeranin. This time they were not sparring, but were instead in the narrow building located on the grounds that was used by anyone that needed it to store equipment when it was not in use. They were cleaning and packing various things: Pieces of armor that served as training equipment, but was also serviceable in true combat. Travel gear such as knapsacks, canteens, and rations, and various other things that they would need for their upcoming trip.
The trip was an annual affair, one that his father had taken he and Mellaithdon on for over a decade now. The main difference this time was that it was going to be the first time that another would be joining them. Mellaithdon was surprised when his father had suggested that he invite Nimthriel, but he was glad for it, as they were smitten with each other in such a way that even the short time of a month they would be gone seemed far too long to be apart. Looking in on the day from the vantage of a dream state, Mellaithdon could only wish that there was some way to go back and intervene, and do something to stop the trip from happening entirely, anything at all that could be done to avert the coming disaster that to this day his soul was shaken from, and his heart wept.
With the light sleep ending from the short second dream, Mellaithdon quickly got out of his bedroll, not wanting to fall back to slumber yet because he knew what would be coming next and was not ready to face it. Tending the fire that did not need attention, drinking more tea though it was cold now and he was not thirsty, he pulled out a small parcel of rations before he shook his head and chided himself for not facing what he knew he must face. With a deep breath to steel his resolve, he set down the rations he held and returned to his bedroll.

#31804, "Mellaithdon's Role Chapter 2"
|
RoleChapter 2 Dream One Added Sat Mar 20 14:10:56 2010 at level 4:The first was the easiest, and called on memories that he enjoyed seeing again. He saw himself in the sparring grounds outside the village where he was raised, working through techniques with his friend, Hirnaeranin. This time he was wielding a staff, the weapon often changed from dream to dream, but it was rather consistent in most other aspects. As they worked, the two typically talked of random things, and this time they were talking of his father, who had also trained them both in weaponry. His father was a warrior who had spent time traveling the lands, but left it behind when his young wife fell ill. She passed away from the unknown illness when Mellaithdon was still young, and his father began training him early on in the only life he really knew. Years later, it was still undecided at that time what Mellaithdon would make of his training, but he assumed he would eventually find himself being an adventurous sort like his father, and take what life offered him when he found it.
With his training, he was skilled in various weapons, but felt most familiar with swords. He never did take well to using shields, and often took on the challenge of wielding a larger weapon that he could employ with both hands. He outmatched Hirnaeranin, though they were both rather good, but the day this dream focused on was one that his friend found the upper hand.
Nimthriel was one that they both knew well from the years of their youth, but she was one that Hirnaeranin knew was beginning to catch Mellaithdon's eye. They thought more on adventure those days, but the opposite sex was beginning to appeal to them more and more, and for Mellaithdon that attention was all the more caught when Nimthriel was near. The day of this dream, she had found some reason to visit the sparring grounds, and lingered close enough to see those that were training there, and more importantly to Hirnaeranin, close enough to be seen by them as well. With a grin, he pointed out that she had come to watch, although Mellaithdon had clearly already noticed as his fighting style suddenly had changed to be more embellished, and his attention was often drawn to who was watching instead of who he was fighting.
With the distractions, it didn't take long for Hirnaeranin to set him up and land a quick blow to the ribs followed by another to the back of one knee that left Mellaithdon kneeling in the packed soil trying to discreetly regain the wind that was knocked from him and resist clutching at his side where he was sure to already have a welt forming. He glowered as Hirnaeranin made a show of asking him if he was alright, and announced that something must have distracted him to not see that strike to his ribs coming, but he also recalled owing his good friend several rounds of drinks days later, as that day turned out to be the topic of conversation between he and Nimthriel that led to their early courtship.

|
RoleChapter 1 Another Night of Dreams Added Sat Mar 20 13:56:19 2010 at level 4:Alone in his small camp, Mellaithdon stirred in restless sleep as the nearby campfire managed a weak spark as it continued to lose its heat. The night had grown cold and mist hung in low areas as the soil relinquished the last remnants of warmth from the previous day's sun to mix with the chilled air. Despite the cold air, Mellaithdon's face beaded with sweat and he tossed his head around in response to whatever dreams filled his mind. Eventually, with a start he bolted upright and reached for the sword lying nearby as his eyes searched the dark woods around him.
Heaving out the breath he had been holding as he fully awoke and realized where he was, he left the sword where it lay and kicked himself free of his bedroll to see to the fire. First stirring the fading embers, and then adding tinder to bring it back to life, he hung a small camp pot over the weak fire and tossed a small amount of tea leaves inside along with a handful of last season berries he had foraged earlier. The dreams that had followed him that last few years happened often enough that he knew that they would continue until he saw them all entirely, and not in such a deep sleep that he would quickly forget them. From previous experience he knew it would require a light sleep, so that he could remember them when he awoke.
Sipping down the weak tea when it was ready, he gauged the hours until sunrise as he returned to his bedroll, knowing that he was in for a long night of poor rest.
Sleep returned quickly, but the effects of the tea helped Mellaithdon keep his slumber light and as expected his dreams returned quickly. He had experienced them all before, but still dreaded the memories that they stirred to mind. But no matter the foreboding feeling he felt as they began, he knew that the only way to be able to find rest in the coming nights was to make his way through them all and easily remember them when he awoke.
