|
Homard Brokenstone the Sapper-Trained of the Forge, Drillmaster of Battle
DescriptionHere is a grey-skinned svirfneblin with close-cropped white hair. His face is broad and bears a ruler-straight scar drawn from the outside-corner of his right eye to corner of his mouth. He is missing the top of his left ear. Between his thick lips you can see a chaotic mess of missing and broken teeth.
Most notable, however, is the presence of a gargantuan nose, the size of which you have never seen on one of this race. It looks like it would be more at home on a giant.
His neck is thick and bears some sort of skin-condition that disappears beneath his shirt, appearing again from under his cuffs and spreading to the back of his hand. Broad shoulders speak of deep strength.
The creature stands as tall as a man's waist and appears weighty and dense. Short, muscled legs bear him up.

RoleChapter 15 The Dwarf With No Hands Added Thu Jul 1 09:29:02 2010 at level 51:Now that he bore the mark of the Hammer set upon a Rune-Covered Anvil Draugnir stood aside to let him pass. Moving respectfully through the shrine, so as not to disturb the Smiths, Brokenstone began to grasp things in a new light. The light of The Forge.
He watched the falling hammers, listened to the rhythmic song, and studied the statues. He came to some realizations.
Thror was not important. He reflected on this. Thror, the foul- mouthed, hammer-handed God of The Forge was not important. It was the story of Thror, the Idea of Thror which mattered. During his long imprisonment Villagers did still invoke The Hammersong, did kill and die for Thror.
If the enemies of The village did imprison the Dwarf again, men would still invoke the Hammer-Handed one as a reason to forge themselves anew, and to pound their enemies against the anvil.
He, himself, had not endured imprisonment, torture, weakness, madness, STANK, searching, learning, Sapper-Training, killing, and dying to please the DWarf. He had done these things so that at each step of his journey he might be stronger, wiser, greater.
Thror's importance was as an Idea, and what that Idea kindled in the minds of others. It was thoughts of Thror that inspired those who would remake themselves and others. Now, an old gnome, he hoped The Brokenstone had become an idea for some.
He knew there were those who avoided him, fearful of the trials that clashing with those axes might bring. There were others that sought him out, seeking to test themselves and perhaps be tempered a bit, whether they were victorious or not.
He thought that this, where the idea of you was enough to temper the minds of others was when one truly stepped on the path to becoming a Smith.

RoleChapter 7 A Worsening Condition Added Mon Feb 15 11:18:38 2010 at level 30:It must have been the heat of the Forge that brought it out. During an audience with Thror, The Stink, the madness and the weakness all came roaring to the surface and presented as a terrible, terrible rash. The Brokenstone squirmed and itched in terrible discomfort. He was ravenous and thirsty like he never had been before. His legs were weak and required a full day's rest after even the shortest of journeys.
But, the cure was close. He was bound in comradeship with two Villagers, mighty Puldun, a giant who struck like a Devil from Hell and blew ash from his nostrils and Mwarrim, a lovely, but painfully shy Fela. Together, shoulder to shoulder, they would cure this ailment.
What information they had was scant. A muddy root was needed to drive the infection from The Brokenstone. That, and a sharp and tiny blade with which Mwarrim would bleed from him The Stink.
So began a journey into every swamp and mudhole they could think of. The journey continues.

RoleChapter 9 No More Waiting/Building a Hut Added Sat Mar 6 18:43:45 2010 at level 40:Awakening on the floor of The War Room, the first thing Brokenstone heard was the thundering voice. He rushed to The Shrine. The fiery Dwarf was there and the Hammersong filled the air.
Soon it became clear that despite The Stink he would need to press on, grow and learn. Thror said that no cure could be attempted until at least the second dance of the Macalla was learned. Brokenstone understood, but There was one last thing to attend to.
It was not that he hated the Earth. It was in his blood and bones, but after his captivity the freedom of The Overworld filled him with an immesurable joy. He had grown fond of climbing to the highest point and being able to see for leagues. He had killed spiders by the score for the chance to fly for a moment. The wind on his skin made his heart race and blew The Stink from him for a fleeting time.
The structure was in place, but needed a great deal of work. An aerie, built by some long dead Arial Villager in the tallest tree in the Darkened Forest Vale. Homard made the climb, pausing frequently to squirm or scratch. He found broken boards and a layer of dirt and soot on the floor. An easy enough fix, he thought.
He made trips to Ysigrath for what seemed like miles of vines. He hewed trees in The Weald, careful to avoid any Outlanders who might be nearby. He traded skins to the blacksmith in Hamsah for nails. He worked day after day.
When completed, he pulled the skin away from the window and looked to the East. He could see the beginnings of the Drogran hills. He was happy. He pulled up the vine ladder and went to sleep. There was much learning to be done.

RoleChapter 10 A Breath of Inspiration Added Sun Mar 21 12:42:52 2010 at level 46:A savage battle with the mindless assassin Lakoaf had resulted in yet another trip to the pit. It seemed the killer was some sort of automaton, killing out of instinct, like an animal. No strategy had, thus far, proven fruitful, not even calling the blood-rage. Homard pouted.
Then, without warning, the voice of a god filled his head. It was not the clanging boom of The Hammersong, or the fiery purr of Iunna. "Perhaps this will help," it said and knowledge flooded the mind of The Brokenstone.
Tactics to help a wounded warrior flashed into his brain. He smiled. Something the mad, stinking svirfneblin had done had pleased the gods and he was rewarded with valuable knowledge, war knowledge. The kind that mattered most.

RoleChapter 11 Trials Added Thu Apr 8 09:11:14 2010 at level 51:The belly of the Volcano was as hot as a forge, but the pantless svirfneblin felt cool. Barely visible in the shadows before him stood Amyliana Tender-Paw, Sapper of the Western Watch. The deed was done. The blood had burned and The Stink was gone. The heat of the lava felt like nothing compared to the sense of his blood burning within him. Brokenstone smiled.
The Stink conquered, Brokenstone was cleansed, but far from pure. He still had a touch of madness left to contend with and weaknesses untold. Yet, his training had begun and the road stretched out hazily in front of him. He turned to thank the Sapper, but she had slipped away unnoticed. He pulled up his pants.
Over the next weeks he felt supernatually strong. Driving The Stink away had filled him with strength the likes of which he had never known. The next trial he faced was overconfidence. A few poundings later and his old sense of humility had returned. Stronger he might be, but his greatest asset remained his mind. This must not be forgotten.
Much time he spent, gathering The Key and The Scepter, also items strong with Stink, that burned his nose as he handed them to the Smith Tahren. He spent days in prayer at the forge of The Hammersong, eager to continue his training, knowing that the madness and weakness could be driven from him yet.
He spoke often of his own trials, and learned of the trials of others. The terrible leader of The Blood Tribunal, Lamayinn, The Fist of Darkness told him of her inability to find the eye of her patron, bearer of the Flaming Crown. He assured her that this was merely her trial and that, as Puldun said, finding the eye of a god was easy, finding the mouth of a god was not. He also made a point of being a trial for her in and of himself, though her tactics are well-thought and she is a deadly foe.
An assassin applicant, Mne, asked if he could guide her from the Sands of Sorrow. He explained that the shifting sands were not a maze, nor a tomb, but simply a trial for her. "If you become desperate," he told her, "you could call upon the Warlord Borkahd, though you'll not likely agree to the price he commands." He later discovered that she had declined his offer to release her from the sands in return for her soul and a place in his hut. Furthermore she had, starving and near death, clawed her way from the sands. He wonders if she can imagine how many lost travellers lay under those endless dunes.
He burns. The Stink is gone, but in a sense he misses it. It was a constant to be overcome. He looks down that hazy road and wonders what lay ahead.

RoleChapter 12 Foul Brewings Added Thu Apr 29 19:41:56 2010 at level 51:Brokenstone sat in the War-Room and brooded. Anyone happening upon him might think that it was because a jaette-man-at-arms had rushed in and killed the Damn Nexun bard he was whaling on with a cry of "Now you die!"
But that was only part of it. He was disturbed by the light he had seen in Knacnar's eyes when The Commander spoke of killing dragons. Now killing dragons is a noble thing, indeed, and good for the reputation, but the light in The Commander's eyes had made The Brokenstone righly uneasy.
And that were to say nothing of the Stinking, filthy dragon essence that had been put in the pit of The Village. Surely it Stank enough for any of them to have smelled it. Yet The Commander insisted it not be destroyed. Foul brewings there, for sure.
But what was Homard to do? Knacnar would certainly not hesitate to burn his hut if he stood against him, and it had been long since he had seen Droma. The time had come to seek The Hammersong. Answers could be found in the clanging forge, if they could be found anywhere.
Furthermore, Rowane, Damned Nexun had been whispering in his ear, claiming that Knacnar did not respect him. Why else would The Commander jump in on a fight between Brokenstone and the Transmuter? More foul brewings.
Brokenstone brooded and wondered if this were a trial...or just something foul.

RoleChapter 13 A Rise Added Mon May 31 20:20:42 2010 at level 51:The ashes of Droma's hut had cooled. The Brokenstone stared at the burnt pit. He felt he was ready. He called out to Grime and gave the order to shovel over the ashes. The space would be needed for the new huts he would grant to the worthy. He was now the Drillmaster of Battle.
He was purer now than he had ever been. He would run his gnarled hands over his skin and squeeze, then sniff the air, searching for any hint of The Stank that might still dwell within him. He detected nothing. Good. It would not do for a leader of The Village to carry the taint of magic.
He wandered down to the stream and looked at his reflection in the still pool. This was what he had wanted all along, he realized. No, not the title, that was merely a a tool in the arsenal. Not the Sapper training either. That was simply to harden him for the long journey. He wanted a name that would not be forgotten.
He thought of a pile of stone plaques, deep beneath the earth, shattered, illegible. One of them held his true name, a name he would never know. He was now, and ever would be, a Brokenstone. But, unlike the forgotten others, he would be remembered, at least he hoped he would.
There were others like him, he was sure, the mad, the sick, who had been swept under the rug, swept under the ground, from Cragstone to The Arial City to The Frigid Waste to the furnace of Kiadanah, every people had those among them who they wished to forget. Homard Brokenstone stood for them. He had proven to himself, if no others, that weakness and Stank could be pounded out of even a sniveling, mad svirfnebli.
His trials were many, but they were far from over. He would need to be crafty, this new Drillmaster, for his body was old and his health not what it once was. With each passing year it became more important for him to use the weapon of his mind, as his blades and feet became less reliable.
He thought back to that mad child, tortured in the darkness by the long-faced Drow. He wondered if one were to sneak to that child's cage and whisper to him what was to be what that child would think.

RoleChapter 14 The Smell of Singed Fur Added Wed Jun 23 22:13:03 2010 at level 51:Brokenstone awoke and took stock of his situation. His eyes were heavy, his limbs appeared to be filled with creaking lead and his head throbbed as though it were full of pulsing, jagged rocks. Still, though, it was a damn sight more pleasant than being in the throes of The Stank.
The Village was strong, or so it seemed. He wondered if it grew bloated, falsely inflated. His keen nose detected what the thought might be the acrid tang of cancer, but fearing that he was wrong, that it was just old prejudices rising to the surface he chose to burn no huts. After all, cancer or not it would soon fall on the shoulders of another.
And then, like a bolt out of the blue a not so old dent in the back of his skull twinged and began to ache. At the same time his nostrils filled with the smell of singed fur. His hand leapt to the back of his head. It was the spot where Iunna had, not long ago, whacked him for implying that her favorite Therans could be found among their huts instead of behind the bar of the Inn. He ran quickly to the Caravans.
Through the bonfire he found the fiery fela chatting with Aelorn, a young paladin who served the spiral. For a long time the three of them talked, of marriage and war, poetry and faith. When all was done The Brokenstone did feel a vigor infuse him. His limbs grew a bit lighter, his head a bit clearer.
His step quickening he took to redoubling his efforts. The tasks he sought to complete included bearing the Mark of The Hammersong, whose Sappers had long ago purified him, driving out The Stank; making a greater name for himself, so that the held down, the strapped down, the STANKED down might know that the purifying fire that will save them is found only within themselves as they forge themselves against the trials of life; and to bring more Dwarves to The Village, the stout folk know courage and honor and make fine anvils upon which to forge others. A brigade of Dwarves might be just what is needed to cleanse The Village and purify it of cancer.
The fire roared in his old blood.

RoleChapter 6 Bragthrak Stone-Smasher, Elemental Rock Troll Added Sun Feb 14 12:09:22 2010 at level 29:Brokenstone sat in the Voralian guild under the watchful eye of the Elven guildmaster. Homard sneered at him. He had come bursting into the guild, drenched with sweat, shrieking that Bragthrak Stone- Smasher, Elemental Rock Troll had been chasing him since Darsylon.
Thing was...there was no troll. Was there?
He could swear he'd been stomping through Arendyl, hoping to catch a Doctor or two at work on the Elves when he'd been stricken with The Big Freeze, a complete and utter inability to move. He figured that this was it. They'd finally caught up with him and he was going to be held, immobile, until they strapped him back down in Teth Azeleth.
But, once The Big Freeze let him go he saw the Rock Troll burst forth from beneath the ground. It chased him willy-nilly until he broke for the goodly city of Voralia.
It was halfway down Shepard's Row that he began to question what had happened. Howling and caterwauling, the travellers he passed (and tried to warn) took no heed of him, but rather averted their eyes and shushed their children.
By the time he got to the guild he was convinced of only one thing: He needed this thing, this madness, this weakness, pounded out of him rightly quick. It would have to become one of his top priorities, which now listed killing doctors, impressing these Villagers, and freeing himself from the evils that beset him. As he muttered the list under his breath the Elven guildmaster glared at him. Homard glared back. It was a good list, he thought.
As he slunk out the door he added one more thing to the list: Keep an eye out for Elemental Rock Trolls.

RoleChapter 5 Mad, Weak and Stinking is No Way to go Through Life Added Thu Feb 11 09:53:09 2010 at level 25:The Brokenstone sat against a tree in The Holy Grove. His axes lay beside him, his helmet on the ground. He was transfixed by a small creature hard at work in a bush level with his eyes.
It was a caterpillar, though he didn't have that word, so he called it a "worm." It was building a chrysalis, but he didn't have that word either, so he called it a "worm-house."
He couldn't imagine why it was doing such a thing. The worms of The Underdark never built houses, he didn't think. It was a strange spectacle, but it was distracting him from his problems.
He stank. He stank as any warrior who fought day and night, but he also Stank of The Stink. After decades of being twisted and blasted by magic he could feel it inside of him and smell it coming off of him. It disgusted him.
He was mad. Not enraged, but mad like the howling Dwarf down in the Drow city. The other day he had tracked a bard from the desert all the way to the Frigid Wastelands. Why? At the last moment he stayed his hand, but for the entirety of the hunt he was convinced that the bard was a sorcerous doctor come to drag him back down. What could that be other than madness?
Perhaps they were right all along. He knew it was unlikely that every wizard in Thera was a doctor coming for him, but when he saw them, when he smelled them, the rage and fear just took over and he'd go slashing at them with all his might. Fine, that, fine, for it is far better to be safe than sorry where one's eternal imprisonment at the hands of the sadistic Drow are concerned, but hounding some poor singer? Madness.
And what of the time he took a blade to his own face? He was a child, yes, but he still had no explanation for it. Fingering the scar he remembered trying to draw forth tears with the blade, but failing. Another sign? An early sign?
And weak. Perhaps it was atrophy of mind and muscle after all that time with the Drow, but he struggled to kill his enemies, sending only one Doctor to the pit, though he fought at every turn. He could fill them with fear, sure, make them run, but as of yet he had only repaid one the debt they were all due. It frustrated and saddened him.
Mad, weak, and stinking is no way to go through life.
He remembered one of the things the howling Dwarf would scream: "Oh Thror, Heat Me Up, Pound Me Down, Quench My Pain, I'm Me Again!" He wasn't sure what that meant, but he'd find this Thror and ask for his help.

RoleChapter 4 A Peculiar Last Name Added Sat Jan 30 08:53:41 2010 at level 16:Svirfnebli scholars among you might be intrigued, or even somewhat taken aback by Homard's last name. Topsiders, however, probably don't know the significance. Here's a lesson in Svirfnebli burial custom.
When a Svirf farms his last crystals, his body is "returned to the earth" in such a way that the deep-gnome communities do not have what topsiders think of as graveyards. The names of the dead are then inscribed on a great wall of rememberance, which is a fixture of most deep-gnome communities.
But, not all names are remembered in this way. If certain boundries are crossed, the name will not be written on the wall. Murderers, traitors, and, yes, the mad have their names inscribed on stone tablets. These tablets are then broken with a hammer and cast onto a pile.
At this point the taitor or madman loses his Svirf-name and is granted the dishonorific "Brokenstone." It is a not uncommon insult in these societies to guess at the number of Brokenstones in a rival's ancestry.
The size of a communities pile of Brokenstones is a matter of shame or pride for the deep-gnomes. Every Svirf knows the rhyme of the town of Chert, whose citizens could not be compliant and whose broken-stones were the size of a giant.
What this means, of course, is that there are a handful of Svirfnebli who walk Thera, but are dead in the eyes of their people. They are the Brokenstones.

RoleChapter 3 The Next Thirty Years Added Fri Jan 29 13:30:43 2010 at level 11:The Next Thirty Years
Thirty years spent in a Drowish madhouse would likely drive even the most sober-minded paladin to the depths of insanity, but such places, of course, do not exist.
The Dark Elves maintain the illusion that have treatments for the unsettled minds of any of Thera's races. They trade mithril and magics for mad Dwarves and Humans; copper and geomancy for Gnomes and Svirfneblin. Usually the families are doubly glad for the small payment they receive in return. The true value is in being rid of the afflicted child. No more nights spent in terror, days long-wound with worry.
Even some of the established hospitals will trade with the Drow. Entire wards of mental-cases emptied in return for a cart or two of glittery- black weapons. "Who will miss them?" is the justification. "The militia needs to be armed, after all. And I'm sure the Drow can provide better care than we could ever manage." Though few actually believe that.
The Dark-Elves realized some generations ago that this was a far easier way to acquire specimens than dashing in with swords-flashing and Driders spewing venom. It could be difficult to determine whether a small settlement of Gnomes harbored a war-mage these days. Easier to trade some useless blades for a few of the "touched" instead. They weren't, after all, savages.
The specimens mad their way to the schools, of course. What better way to learn to kill a Minotaur than to dissect one alive? It turns out that the Bulls have a rather weak spot just under the...well, we'll keep that a secret for now.
Now, it just might happen that a young svirfneblin might be taken to the school of magic where he might spend the next years being enlarged and reduced, burned and cooled, tortured and healed, transmuted and invoked.
That would be terrible enough for anyone? But it might just be worse for someone who landed in this mess to begin with because they were extra- ordinarily sensitive to a particular smell, a smell that few have the nose for, but which reeks like sulphur and orc-shit to the few who can sense it. The smell of magic.
Granted, there are some for whom the smell is like roses borne aloft by cherub-farts, but not for this one. He smelled the nascent spark in his childhood companion and stove in the youth's head in an attempt to cleanse him. Foolish, yes, but so work the minds of children.
Now imagine such a nose being held captive for decades in a place where magic seeps from the walls. Someone not already mad might be driven there by such an experience. Don't you agree?

|
RoleChapter 2 The rest of the papers are here Added Fri Jan 29 09:39:05 2010 at level 8:Incident (Year 7)
Subject has displayed behavior of "inspecting" other patients (smelling.) Apparently discovered something disagreeable on other patient (male) and throttled until near death. Victim's status is reported: critical, but expected to recover.
Recommendation: Speaking freely, I get a bad feeling about this one.
ADDENDUM: (Double electric-therapy, add 1/week water-therapy {Gneiss})
Chief Security Officer children's Wing Asylum Cragstone (Lower) Officer Igneo Basaltus
Evaluation (Year 10)
Subject has grown increasingy obsessed with "cleanliness" of, as yet, undetermined definition. Smelling of patients and objects has continued. Violent outbursts have increased on a yearly basis (see attached folder of 42 incident reports.) Explanations for behaviors have not been forthcoming.
Elemental therapies have proved ineffectual. May have contributed to decline of subject.
Evaluation: It is unlikely that subject will ever be reindoctrinated or will ever hold a position in Svirfneblin society. Status to be listed as INCORRIGIBLE (VIOLENT.) It is beyond the scope of this facility, certainly the Children's Wing, to continue treatment of this subject.
Recommendation: Though distasteful for one so young, it is recommended that subject be remanded to Asylum Teth Azeleth in return for .
Chief of Staff Asylum Cragstone (Upper/Lower) Doktor Obsidius Blackrock, Certified Invoker
