Chapter 3

From a small tribe in the harsh Wastes of Nonveil came a
harsh justice system enforced by its nomadic people.
Death or exile was the only punishment given within this dark
world. Many criminals, confronted with the choice, chose swift death
over the slow, painful suffering that death by dehydration and
heat stroke would be sure to cause. Some skeletons left among the
shifting sand dunes can be found clutching the tribes symbol, a
falling star, as they found solace from the heat in death's icy grip.

Into this world was born Shalsad, a young discontent with
a penchant for violence. As he grew, he became increasingly
unhappy with his simple life, and longed for escape. And so he studied
the arts of shapeshifting, so that one day he could transform
into a great bird to escape his sandy prison.

The one trapping of the city life that the nomadic tribe had was
its justice system: sentences were handed down from a council
of three elders, and a trial was held for each person accused of a
serious crime. This interested Shalsad greatly, and so he began
to sit in on the trials, which were open to the rest of the tribe, so
that he might marvel on their wisdom and brutal efficency.

A tricky case came up involving the son of the weaponmaker and a hunter's
daughter, in which the former was accused of raping the latter. Several
witnesses were brought to bear on the man's character, as well as
to establish his presence elsewhere during the night in question. For the woman
there was only her testimony as well as one of the sages of the tribe who
said that the woman was telling the truth. After hearing the facts, the
elders retired to their chambers to deliberate.

Shalsad loitered some ways away from the tent where the elders decided the
young man's fate, using his newly learned Ears of the Bat to listen in
on the discussions. He heard an odd noise - was that laughter? coming
from inside the tent. Shalsad found this quite odd for such a grim affair
and so he listened more carefully. "Kid's had it coming ever since his
father refused to continue making those weapons for us to
sell to the opposing tribes." the head elder's voice cackled.

Shalsad gasped in shock, at the same time touching his arm where another
tribe's spear had pierced his skin in an ambush months ago, using
what now appeared to be weapons illicitly sold by his own elders!

The conversation between the elders continued, mostly light discourse about
the son's potential demise. Shalsad gleaned that the entire story was
fabricated as punishment for the merchant's disobedience. Shalsad retreated to
his tent in a state of shock and disgust, the heat of the desert sun
doing nothing to restore warmth to the blood that now ran ice cold through his veins.

An hour later, as Shalsad remained stunned in his tent, the elders voted for
death. His mother wept, and a pool of blood formed on the lower lip of
the father. Finally, the father cried "This is not justice!". The head
elder silenced him with an intimidating, menacing stare. The son
was led outside and executed in most unceremonious fashion.

Shalsad felt the disgust pool within his stomach.

Chapter 2

Shalsad had lost all faith in his tribe. For some time he wandered
around in a daze, and then renewed his studies with intense fervor. All
he needed was one flight! Weeks passed, and finally one fateful night
he went to the weaponsmith with a proposition. "You want justice?" he
demanded. The weaponsmith nodded slowly. "Then here is what you will do. . "

Some days later, the tiny blade was done, and the weaponsmith handed it
to him with pride and anxiousness. "Take no pride in what you have
made or what I am about to do." snapped Shalsad. The weaponsmith looked
at the floor sheepishly as Shalsad hurried out of the tent.

He went directly to report that the weaponsmith had tried to murder him.
The smith was quickly apprehended and held in bondage. The next day the Elders
convened for a trial. "What proof do you have of this attack, Shalsad?"
questioned the head elder. Shalsad stood forward of the crowd and said "I have
all the proof you will need right here, if I may present it to you, sir."
The head elder nodded and beckoned him closer. He held out the tiny
blade fashioned by the weaponsmith. "What you have here, is a weapon of great
justice" Shalsad said. "Explain further, please" asked the head elder, as he
reached out his hand to take the dagger.

His hand was met with a quick thrust to the ribs as, in a flash, Shalsad had
wielded the dagger and pierced his heart. "This is for him" Shalsad cried, as
he pointed to the weaponsmith, "and for them", as he pointed to the now gasping
crowd. From his hand he took a bundle of gold coins marked with the opposing
tribe's seal. "These coins have been paid for by our blood!" he shouted.
As the head elder slumped to the floor, his lifeforce bleeding out of him,
Shalsad's form quickly blurred into a misshapen, poorly formed skyflash, and
he flew towards freedom and safety, his own particular brand of justice signed
and delivered, and now on the lookout for more.

Chapter 1

As he embraced his job as a Magistrate, Shalsad was quickly
recognized and promoted to Galadon. As the days passed, the
battles against the lawless raged, and so a toll was taken
on his body. As he kept Order in the streets, his
enthusiasm for the law gave way to contempt for it.
He knew who the real criminals were. The real threats to
society did not always wear a criminal mark, although
they often did. The law was getting in the way of Order.

Slowly, he began to understand the ways to manuver around it.
Being a Magistrate was not always black and white. He would
rise above the shackles of law to keep Order at any cost. His
thoughts turned back to his village from time to time. Were
the elders really wrong? Perhaps they were more wise
than even he had realized. He pondered the question
as he thought about how to best keep the cities safe.

And of course, for a hardworking, incorruptible magistrate
such as himself, he should be compensated as he sees fit. Anything
else would be the most injust of all! Shalsad thought of the many
ways his position would allow him to compensate himself.
