Manden the Steadfast Blade of the Spire, Provost Magistrate
DescriptionWorn but well cared-for armor covers the muscular body of a tanned man that appears to be somewhat past the best years of his life.Short, dark brown hair that covers his head begins to fade to grey, in addition to that of his closely-trimmed beard. An impressive yet simple halberd lies planted firmly in the ground, held steady by his right hand. Two grey eyes straddle a broad nose, deep wrinkles around them revealing perhaps more depth to this man than may earlier be thought.A quiet man of average heighth, while his voice is often firm and precise, every so often a hint of a less educated past shines through in his speech. The Scales of Justice are embroidered on a heavy cloak that covers much of his body, and a certain sense of awareness is visible in his gentle eyes. Overall, it is hard to tell much of this man other than the overwhelming sense of duty that surrounds him.

RoleChapter 6 Joining the Tribunal--Conflict with the Empire Added Sat Jul 10 17:16:15 2004 at level 51:Life in the Guild was alright, but a lot of the adventurers think real high of themselves. Everyone's a bloody philosopher--even the giants and orcs. They don't really talk like real people, lots of them, 'cause they're trying to impress others an' think they're gonna lead them some day.
Still, it did get me thinking, and I realized that I'd better do something with my life, and that I'd probably be a good guard. After all, I do go the benefits of a portective society to thank for my success so far. If there hadn't been any organization like the militia of Tir-Talith, I woulda died out on the plains there. 'Sides, they do pay.
Well, I got placed on the Watch in Seantryn Modan and only a little after that the priests of the Empire decided to cause a ruckus with the Spire even though there were a treaty. I got caught at the center of this, and when Lord Grurk called me to the Temple, I figured I was gone. Instead, I got promoted to Galadon Magistrate.
It really pissed me off that all of these Imperials would lie and break treaties and orders, especially when they all claim to do this in Order's name. I just don't see how anyone can expect to have order in a group when nobody's being honest and they're all betraying each other.

RoleChapter 5 To the 51st Rank Added Sat Jul 10 17:25:33 2004 at level 51:Well, it didn't really take me long to reach the top of my guild with all the help I got from the rest of the folks in the Spire. I got a lot to thank the Spire for, and I plan on serving as a Magistrate for a long time. Still, there's times that make the burden pretty heavy sometimes.
Like, when I'm told to help another Magistrate of the Necromancer's Guild to create zombies. My parents, and most of the people I grew up with, they all worshipped the Mother of the Harvest Moon, at least in some sense, and this whole thing with undead is so disgusting to me because of that I guess.I were planning on going to seek out the Goddess Amaranthe and ask if there were something I could do, maybe she'd---hell, I don't know, and it weren't likely to be pretty seeing as how she's one of the Thar-Eris witches. Just felt I had to do something.
And something else, like when other Magistrates of the Paladins guild go around killing dwarves and ex-Tribunals for their armor. So terrible, it's almost ridiculous, but I didn't think there was much I could do about it.
Another thing, with the people of the Fortress.A lot of them get real mad at me when I mark them for breaking the laws, and call me a tool of the Imperials and whatnot. I try to explain to them that I'm enforcing the laws so I can help create a safer place for everyone, and if I don't enforce them equally they don't mean anything, but most of them won't listen. Hell, I at least talk to people I disagree with with respect most of the time. Still, there's a few, some of the Acolytes of the Golden Sun that I'm starting to really like.
And it gets real trying sometimes to deal with the priests of the Ki-Rin. I gotta have respect for them and all, and in some ways we believe in the same things, but I was always told to be very modest about ones skills, and they certainly don't seem to be very good at that.

RoleChapter 4 A Provincial Magistrate--Dealing with Conflicts Added Sat Jul 10 17:28:19 2004 at level 51:Well, if this ain't the story of my life I don't know what is by now. Every time I start begin doubting whether I'm doing the right thing in the Watch, I'm asked to take on more responsibility.
I'd had to deal with quite a few petty little disputes between the younger Magistrates, and most of the time it seems that they're caused by people thinking too big of themselves.I liked the Provost Lemath a lot because he never seemed to think he was so important like a lot of the others.
Anyway, this mindless bickering started to wear on me, though I must say I had gotten pretty good at resolving it, and I was considering whether I might be happier going back to farming or perhaps as an Acolyte.
Lord Grurk then asks me how I'm finding things in the Spire and whenever this happens I seem to always realize that while things may not be the greatest, I'm doing what I can and need to get over any minor problems to continue to help keep people safe.
Anyway, he sets me as a Provincial Magistrate, which means I got to watch over Hamsah Mu'tazz and the ruined city of Tar Valon for the first time.

RoleChapter 3 Sergeant-At-Arms to Provost Magistrate Added Tue Jul 27 20:48:01 2004 at level 51:Well, I musta been doing alright because this time when Lord Grurk came at me in the Spire I knew I hadn't done nothing wrong. He asked me how things were going during my service and I said I was glad and all to be serving yet, but I'd gotten pretty frustrated with the unorganized way we would fight our enemies. The Vindicator weren't never around, and there'd be these huge groups of criminals that would run around killing everyone in their path. I'd try to organize the other Magistrates so we could stop them but they wouldn't respond to anything I said and would always try to fight them one-by-one.
So I said I was pretty frustrated with that but was otherwise glad I was there. Grurk told me he thought I was ready for more responsibility and placed me as Sergeant-At-Arms of the Spire. I was supposed to be busy training our Magistrates and taking up the Vindicator's duties while he was gone. Was still a Provincial Magistrate in all other respects, but soon everyone started to recognize me as the Steadfast Sergeant of the Spire. Pretty big honor if you ask me.
Not long after that, Provost Alaclanstel died. I weren't around for it, but I hear there was quite a ceremony. Anyway, the Great Ki-Rin called me into the Memorial Hall shortly after that and wanted to talk with me. He asked me how things were going--an impressive sight he is, I must say--and I told him I was glad and all to be on the Watch still. He told me he thought I was doing good and he could see me as a great Vindicator some day, but the problem was the Spire needed a Provost.
He talks all funny, like he's a Knight, or something, but he was right. Well, the idea of taking charge of the Spire were something I was pretty leary of: I always been told that anyone that wants power wants it for their own good, and those that don't want it and get it are corrupted by the power. I gotta admit I'm not the greatest fighter, and didn't think I'd end up being a very good Vindicator in the end. I was blessed by him, and soon known as Steadfast Blade of the Spire, Provost Magistrate.
I told him that if I were leader that people would be moving up and down in their positions a lot faster than with Lemath, but honestly, so far I ain't got much of a chance to do so.

RoleChapter 2 Arkham Added Tue Jul 27 20:52:18 2004 at level 51:Well, right before that had happened the city of Arkham opened up some crypts beneath it. Around that time Lord Grurk was tricked by Qaledus or on the Eastern Continent and had lost his amulet. He asked our help in getting it and we found this guy called the Badeker--real nice guy from what I could tell--had it.
We found the Badeker trying to sell that amulet to the thieves guild. I ordered the guildguard to step aside but he didn't, so I decided to break into that place. We got in, and out-bid the guildmaster, Drokalyth payed for it all himself and wouldn't accept our coins because I think he thought he'd get all the thanks for it.
Then, Lord Grurk comes into the guild and demands to know where the Badeker got the amulet. The Badeker was talking pretty shiftily, and Grurk went and killed him after saying there was only one way to deal with chaos. I gotta say, seeing that made me sick. One of the evilest things I've seen another Magistrate do right there, and he's an immortal Lord.
Captain K'ahn of Arkham got real mad at us. I don't think he knows the real story, but looking back it was pretty thuggish of us to do so and I have to admit that during the thrill of the moment I think I was motivated by the promise of glory, sad as it is.None of us were on-duty and Grurk hadn't ordered us to do this. We broke into a guild too, which is something Magistrates are never supposed to do, but Grurk didn't seem to mind, after the fact. Makes me pretty suspicious of him, to be honest.
Vindicator Odrirg got pretty upset with all of us, and for good reason. Then I were made Provost. Then the Spire were thanked by the City of Galadon and given an office. Then Jack of Arkham came and started attacking me, the Justiciar Alarian and other citizens in Galadon.
He told us it was to pay back for striking Arkham, and I made sure everyone know he was a criminal. He said more people would be coming from Arkham to cause chaos, so me, the Justiciar and some others went to Arkham to stop this right then and there.
We found Captain K'ahn on the docks and tried to talk to him, but he wouldn't say nothing. So we found Jack sitting in Patch's Tavern and we killed him like the criminal he was. Just before we killed him, Captain K'ahn came to the Tavern and branded us all criminals and then attacked us. I told him we didn't want no fight with him and as soon as Jack were dead I released my lieutenants, ordered everyone out and fled. K'ahn continued his attack, so I knocked him out, and we left. Justiciar Alarian and my friend Gnayt stayed in the city and K'ahn were pretty angry and eventually said he didn't want us Tribunal in his city any more.
I decided that for the time being, it would be best to comply with his request and sent a scroll to all the Magistrates, but there's nothing I can do to actually prevent them from going there since it's off

RoleChapter 1 First Mistake as Provost Magistrate Added Tue Jul 27 20:56:57 2004 at level 51:Well, not long after I were made Provost Magistrate I messed up pretty big. I marked these two real young adventurers for taking this guy's things from the urn in Hamsah Mu'tazz, and my guards killed one of them. Well, the one that was a criminal then gave his stuff to the one that was a ghost and surrendered. Right in front of me the one that was a ghost gave all that armor he'd stolen back to the one that had just died. I argued with them lots and eventually marked them again, killing the first one to die a second time.
Lord Grurk heard about this and ordered me to the Spire. I think by now he might've known I wasn't real pleased with him, and he's got a way of talking to you where he'll twist whatever you'll say into the worst possible interpretation and then get real angry if you try to clarify at all. He told Lord Grurk heard about this and ordered me to the Spire. I think by now he might've known I wasn't real pleased with him, and he's got a way of talking to you where he'll twist whatever you'll say into the worst possible interpretation and then get real angry if you try to clarify at all. He told me I was going to fall from my post as soon as he got done talking with the Great Ki-Rin and Lord Drunsthol because I'd marked these two twice for the same crime and had killed an 'innocent.' Couldn't help but think of him kiling the Badeker right after we'd done business with him at that moment.
Well, I came back, and hadn't been cast down yet. Lord Grurk didn't seem to have much to say about it all, but eventually he and the Great Ki-Rin ordered me into the Memorial Hall, where I told my version of the story to Lord Velkurah.
The Grandmaster let me tell my story without interrupting me, and offer why I thought I had been doing the right thing. I felt and still do feel that those two were mocking the Law by evading the spirit of it like that. Lord Velkurah seemed to agree with me, but said I must still be punished and asked what I thought should be done.
I told him I could see why I should be cast out, but also could see reasons for me to stay as Provost. In the end, I felt that I was still the most capable to lead, and hadn't been acting to help myself at all, so I should remain Provost at least until one more suitable to lead could be found.Lord Velkurah seemed to agree, but said I must still be punished as was the way of the Spire. He asked me what I thought a reasonable punishment would be, and I offered forbidding me to call my lieutenants for some time. The Ki-Rin told me I couldn't call them for one elven eve. One! That was pretty much the weakest slap on the wrist I could've gotten, and I was both shocked and honored that he thought my proposed punishment were suitable.
Lord Grurk didn't look too pleased about this at all, and I gotta say it made him a lot less scary in my eyes to see him get overruled by the Great Ki-Rin. Wonder if there ain't gonna be a big conflict between those two soon though.

Immortal CommentsThu Jul 1 22:52:20 2004 by 'Velkurah' at level 51 (228 hrs): Grurk and I thought he was doing a good job, so we titled him "Steadfast Sergeant of the Spire"
Fri Jul 9 13:15:28 2004 by 'Velkurah' at level 51 (256 hrs): He's been doing good, along the lines of being a Vindicator one day, maybe, but we need a Provost. Talked to him and hinted that he might have the ability to pick between the two, but he was being offered Provost right now.
Fri Jul 9 13:16:23 2004 by 'Velkurah' at level 51 (256 hrs): He agreed to serve as Provost. It was very well done, and he was sticking to modesty through it all.
Sun Jul 11 19:46:41 2004 by 'Lyristeon' at level 51 (267 hrs): Used Jack to give them something to think about regarding the note from Gishka to Kate. Manden did a good job. More on Alarian, Slasswot and Dramdor.
Fri Jul 23 20:13:44 2004 by 'Lyristeon' at level 51 (278 hrs): Had to put up with me and a dragon. Handled it very well.
Fri Jul 30 22:54:40 2004 by 'Grurk' at level 51 (317 hrs): Observed him having an indept conversation regarding Spire personnel, very cool points in my book, ask for opinions from his Magistrates.
Fri Aug 13 20:34:35 2004 by 'Grurk' at level 51 (366 hrs): Inducted Verdelyeb into the Spire without any Immortal consultation. Bull***. This should have been handled by Velkurah or myself.
Mon Aug 23 14:25:22 2004 by 'Velkurah' at level 51 (395 hrs): Send him a dream and had a chat about it a bit later, fortelling something spooky and omnious!
