Chapter 13

Overdue to her pregnancy Zanubi leaned against the wall, panting heavily.
*Slow down will you?* This oversized stomach of mine isnt any fun to run
around with, she said.
The duergar didnt even look back, only snarled some snide response to
Zanubi. He was covered with wounds that he didnt seem to notice but he
pressed forward, not slowing down the pace. Suddenly another pair of demons
appeared from nowhere and the duergar quickly took at step back and let a
strange dark shadow take the brunt of the attack before throwing himself at
the demons with his axe and flail, you could hear the wailing of a thousand
souls as he struck at the demons.

Zanubi let out a deep sigh and by uttering a few words the heat in the room
became tensing before exploding in a huge nova, evaporating the demons.
The duergar glanced at Zanubi, showing a few broken teeth in what could have
been a smile before he continued up the halls.

Zanubi slumped to the ground, exhausted, physically and mentally. Invoking
such powerful spells was quite taxing for someone in her condition. The
duergar now covered mostly in dry blood sat down next to her and began eating
on some roasted chickens, say a few guttural words while chewing. *Shudve be
*crunch*... Shud be pushin harder yuh, unly that fargin archmage te take
*crunch*... Care of. *
Zanubi glared at the duergar before invoking the magic of a potent wand,
slowing her heart rate down, before she curled up on her blanket, falling
deep asleep.

Pain... Locked in a cage, beneath water... Struggling... Dying... Zanubis eyes open
wide and she opens her beak to utter some carefully chosen words, nothing
comes out. And as she looks around her, the duergar is gone. She tries looks
around herself... Demons, lots and lots of demons. She takes a deep breath and
tries to send herself home, but nothing comes out, only a cold chill on her
neck.

*So, awake are we?* A voice said, and as it speaks the lines of demons seem
to open up and out steps the archmage on the Isle of Corte. *A perfect
specimen, maybe a bit fat, but still. He kept his word*
Zanubi opened her beak to come with a sharp tongued answer, as she was known
for, but all the came out of her lips was *Yes master.*
As she realized what she had said her eyes widened, and her beak fell wide
open...

Chapter 12

*YOU WILL DO AS YOU ARE TOLD ZUBI!* That was the most common phrase Zubi
heard during her early years, and it came from every adult she knew, her
mother, her mothers master and her teachers. Zubi never did as she was told,
she was constantly up to no good, doing pranks, intentionally misplacing the
other mistresses things, spreading chaos through the tower, but always out of
the way from the archmage.

Even though she found them to be harsh she was still pampered with, and as
there were only woman in the top chambers of the tower they all constantly
told her how beautiful she was, constantly giving her advice on how to snare
men and flirt. Most of them had been the archmages mistresses for centuries,
and having Zubi around for a few years gave them something else to talk
about.

Being a child to one of the crazed wizards mistresses was not a walk in the
park. Though Zubi knew nothing else. For many years she believed her mother
to be a weak mage not able to escape with the weak powers she possessed.
It was not until one day a group of adventurers came, and in the chaos that
followed Zubi saw how her mother single-handedly disposed of them all even
before the archmage got to cast his first spell.

Zubi was stunned, how could her mother, with such power, still be held
prisoner by the archmage, letting him use her for all his eccentric
experiments? So many questions came to Zubi that day, and yet she waited for
a while week before she confronted her mother about it.

It was a midnight when Zubi sneaked over to her mothers bed, her mother had
the night off and other mistresses were entertaining the archmage.
*Pssst, mother? Are you awake?* Zubi whispered, a hissing reply quickly
followed. *Yes Zubi, Im awake. Ive been waiting for you to come.*
*Just be quiet, and listen, I know all your questions, and I shall answer
them right now.* her mother whispered. And Zanubi began to tell her tale, how
she used to be the chancellor of the eternal night, the most powerful invoker
in all of Thera. She told Zubi of the eternal night, the prophecy, its goals,
and how her studies had made come up with a theory that had the potential to
trigger the prophecy, a theory that would start an eternal night. She also
told Zubi of the betrayal by her advisor, a powerful duergar death knight who
had sold her to the archmage when they were on a routine mission to the
Island to fetch something for the duergar's god.

*I never got a chance to test my theories Zubi, and now I never will, Im
trapped her for eternity. I might be more powerful than the archmage, but
this necklace, will sustain me far beyond what our race should be able too,
and it lets the archmage control me as hed like.* she whispered. *But,
there is still a chance to test my theories, and that is through you. You
must carry out my legacy, and bring forth the eternal night, use these notes.

Chapter 11

But you must always make sure that none can betray you, there are guilds out
in Thera that can teach you that, to stay in the shadows, to never become
detected.*

Zubi looked at her mother with terror in her eyes, how could her mother
expect her to do this? She possessed no magical talents? How could she
succeed when her powerful mother failed?
*But mother...* She whispered, but was cut short by her mothers voice *Not
buts! You will do as youre told Zubi, I have devised a plan for you to
escape, and Ive written a letter of recommendation to the guild of assassins
in Hamsah. Hopefully my reputation still holds some worth out there, you will
go now, and never return, if you do, the archmage will make sure I torture
and kill you. Now go* she said and handed Zubi the notes and pointed to a
secret door that suddenly opened up as Zanubi pointed at it.

Zubi hesitated for a moment, then ran to the door, tears streaming from her
eyes down her beak, she look back over her shoulder at her mother, but all
she saw was the cold dead eyes of Zanubi glaring at her *DO AS YOURE TOLD
ZUBI!* her mother yelled, and the secret door slammed shut behind her,
leaving Zubi in the darkness. She began following the tunnel by feeling her
way forward with her hands. Suddenly the ground disappeared under her, and
she fell.

Chapter 10

*SPLASH* The fall didnt last very long and before she knew it she was
underwater, flapping her wings, bringing her up to the surface. Spitting
water and gasping for her she looked around her, she could see! Some strange
moss on the walls was lighting up the little cave slightly, but she couldnt
see any way out of this pool. After carefully examining the walls she decided
that shed have to go under water, so she dived, every fibre of her body
screaming that she shouldnt, but she forced herself under the water, and
kept diving until she found a small crevice.

She pushed her self through and kept swimming, the air burning in her lungs,
panic rising in her head when she suddenly saw it, light! There was a regular
blinking of light ahead of her, so she pushed her self harder, using her
hands grabbing the rock wall and pulling herself forward until she finally
was out and her soaked face broke the water surface.
The light blinked again, and she begun swimming towards it...

Pain... Locked in a cage, beneath water... Struggling... Dying... Zubis eyes opened,
and she blinked in the strong daylight. It was hot, very hot... *I survived?
Where am I?* she thought and crawled up on her feet, flapping a few times
with her wings, sands whirling around from them. She looked around herself
and saw that she was right next to the northern pier of the Hamsah docks. She
made a high jump, using her wings, up to the pier and began to walk into the
city, asking for directions on the way, though none seemed to know anything
about the whereabouts of the assassin guild. Suddenly a man stumbled into
her, and after loudly apologizing she just barely heard someone whisper *Take
the next street to south, youll find what youre looking for there*.

Zubis did as she was told, and as she walked passed an alley she felt
someone grab hold of her clothes, jerking her right into the alley. *So,
youre looking for us?* someone whispered, she could still not see anyone,
but there were shadows everywhere, an easy place to hide in. *Why have you
come here?* the voice whispered.

Zubi steeled herself, and pulled up the now dried letter from her pocket.
*This is why Im here!* She said, with a determined look on her face that
didnt match her high pitched, insecure voice. Out of nowhere a man appeared
and snapped the letter out of her hand.
*Ooooh, so, Zanubis offspring are we?* Most parts of the world that would
have made you a head shorter, since everyone knows that Zanubi isnt in power
anymore, but... Youre lucky, I owe her one.* the man said. *Ill talk to the
guild master, and well see what we can do...*

Chapter 9

There are quite a few ways to bring forth an eternal night. Unfortunately
most of them takes such a tremendous effort that I would acquire most of the
Theras wizards, and maybe even a few gods.

But there is someone who has already made half of the work. He has created a
relatively safe way to travel between the elemental planes. It is in a large
warehouse hidden in the mountains east of Udgaard. By using several specially
crafted tubes, a lot of elemental magic he has managed to create portals
between the planes.
But if you are able to reconnect these tubes, and use a large portion of
shadow magic, we should be able to bring out an endless stream of smoke from
the right plane, to cover all of Thera in smoke, thus bringing forth an
eternal night in a very powerful ritual performed by either necromancer or a
dark knight. Preferably this is made by a lich, as none else should actually
survive casting those spells.

Pearl of power
Cube of force
Heart of blackest pitch
The orb of Twilight
Lichs phylactery of an invoker
12xElement resistant tubing
Iridescent Orb
Bar of Unyielding Titanium
Mithril Shard Dragonbone
A lich to invoke the ritual
Preferably a dwarf to forge the tubing
Invoker to etch the arcane symbols onto the tubing with acid.

This will by far be the easiest way to cover Thera in an eternal night, and
as my calculations below will show, it will work for certain.

Chapter 8

Zubi will strive to fulfil her mothers theories, even though she dislikes
the idea of having a plan to follow the notes her mother gave her will be the
on point of direction she has. She will do anything that profits herself and
her mothers goal.
Zubi also considers her self very beautiful and has no problems flirting with
other races as she grew up with a very open view on what beauty is.

Chapter 7

As the years have gone by, Zubi has questioned her devotion to her mothers
task. She has come to enjoy the hunt for prey, spreading chaos, striking
where it is least expected.
Though the more she thinks about it, the more she is convinced that this was
a part of her mothers plans, equipping me with the knowledge and skills
needed to best take advantage of an eternal night. The chaos it would inflict
to spread the eternal night, and how easy it would be to strike from the
darkness when there is only darkness.

Zubi is convinced, this is not only a quest to her mothers will, but actually
something she desires herself, and she will do anything in her power to make
sure the prophecy is fulfilled, all but sacrificing her life, she must be
alive to make use of the darkness.


Zubi has also made some studies, of the planar sanctum she found in the
mountains, and in a very old lab of someone who came close to bringing forth
the eternal darkness. Of course that person failed to keep the plans a
secret, but a few useful things she found out...

What a fool! I bet he did not manage to keep his plans a secret, at least
from what I can tell from the golden grimoires that marks this place. I will
make no such mistake.
Though this is useful, he has found out a way to protect the mage who
performs the ritual, I bet he planned on doing it himself, so no wonder he
wanted to survive. Well, this might be useful, now I can decide if I want the
mage to live or die once the ritual is performed...

Chapter 6

Zubi has also decided that she will seek out the chasm that her mother once
ruled. In such a place she is certain that she can find powerful enough mages
and artefacts to complete the ritual. She has already spoken to a few, and
aided them in a few small tasks to get on the their good side.

She also spoke to the chancellor briefly, who stated that she must reach the
38th title of her guild, and show the chancellor that she is capable of
handling herself without the chasms aid. This she finds demeaning as she
considers herself superior to everyone both when it comes to battle and test
of wits. But, she is prepared to be submissive for as long as its needed to
bring her plans into action. It didnt hurt that she found the chancellor to
be a very attractive bird, perhaps he is as interesting as he looks...

Chapter 5

Finally Zubi was granted a meeting with the chancellor. Spending years to
impress different members of the chasm to get their recommendations finally
paid off. After discussing her theories with the first Xazier and then the
chancellor Zubi is confident that she has made the right choice to join the
chasm. Already has flaws in her theories and calculations been pointed out,
and now when she has access to the libraries and research of the chasm, she
can start working at a faster pace.

It seems that she has inherited her mothers talents for arcane mathematics,
and how to construct powerful rituals. Lacking magical talents prevent her
from using them herself, but in such a powerful place shes certain that
shell find someone to provide the necessary talent.

The chancellor was not entirely impressed with Zubis abilities, he seemed to
care less for her theories and more about her knowledge of protections and
tasked her with improving on this. So, whenever time is given, shell try to
improve her knowledge of these.

Chapter 4

The shadows are a lonely path to walk and for years Zubi has been walking it.
This has made her long for company, though its nothing that she admits to
herself even, but it has its outlet in how he interacts with others. She is
even more so outgoing and flirty, with just about anyone who shows the
slightest interest to her. Most people would call her insane by now, but she
is actually quite rational and she intents to go through with her plans to
bring forth the eternal night, magic or no magic, doesnt matter much to her,
even though the current chancellor cares about it.

Perhaps if she were to be the advisor she could convince the chancellor to
follow her plans somehow, even if she has no real desire to lead, she do know
how to give advice... For her own and her plans benefit of course.

Though she has encountered a complication in her ritual. Obtaining a
phylactery of an invoker will be hard, very hard. The only way she can see is
that shell have to assassinate one, if that is even possible. So, she has
set herself to the task of mastering the art.

Chapter 3

After Zubi gave the list of artifacts to Iktul he has been haunting her about
what theyre for. Delaying the answer trying to come up with something smart
to throw him off the trail took some time, but finally, a meeting took place.

*Greetings my dearest.* Iktul said, the now old man looking at her with lust
in his eyes.
*Hi handsome* Zubi responded, tilting her head a bit to reveal some feathers
on her long slender neck. *So, you want to know what they are for Well, it
is complicated but Ill give you the general idea*
Iktuls face loses its smile and he seems to be concentrating as Zubi begins
to explain the concepts of her plans.
Zubi has given great thought on what to say, and pictures Iktul a machine
that can do wonders, almost read the future given the right circumstances. As
not much was needed to convince Iktul of the grandeur of this apparatus Zubi
sealed the coffin with her final words. *I assume that you would want to have
unrestricted access to the device once its built?* and with a wide smile
Iktul nodded and the deal was done. Iktul was now involved, to fetch Zubi the
artefacts needed from the two liches that holds them.

If now only Zubi could meet with the chancellor, and whisper some well put
words in his ear and her plans would finally be on the brink of success.

Chapter 2

Suddenly a voice whispered in Zubis ear. Somewhere in her less than sane
head she was startled, as she knew her able senses would have felt most
mortals presence. The voice whispered about her lusts and desires. As she had
carefully been hiding her plans from everyone she was reluctant at first to
open up to some unknown entity, but as it asked her to meet within the chasm,
she agreed.

The conversation with the voice most likely only lasted for minutes, but for
Zubi it felt like a lifetime, a lifetime of outmost satisfaction. Shifting
between threats and promises the voice made sure Zubi would do as told, not
that Zubi in her feverish state would consider anything else. Zubi would in
return for this entitys aid feed it with various artefacts that she might
encounter in her quest for chaos, and she will do so eagerly. As, what Zubi
thought of it, a sign of good fate Zubi was made advisor to the chancellor, a
position she knew she would suit perfectly for, whispering little lies in the
chancellors ears, bringing her plans for Thera forth.

As the voice faded out, so did another bit of Zubis sanity... Perhaps this
entity was a new god? She would do as told, and warn the world of what was
coming, as they wouldnt stand a chance anyways, as this new gods prophet
she would enjoy the spoils of chaos, unknown sources of power now within her
reach, perhaps even immortality?

Chapter 1

Suddenly a chill goes through Zubis spine, and she find herself summoned
into a dark passageway, standing before Satebos, the undead scholar.
*Speak Zubi, explain the ritual you wish me to perform*
Licking her lips, giggling nervously Zubi begins to explain the ritual,
flipping through the pages, showing diagrams and runes to the lich.
Countless of hours the lich spends on draining Zubi of every piece of
information that she has about the ritual. And as it is content, the haggling
begin, at what prize will Zubi obtain the lichs aid?
For the orb, Zubi is required to fetch the cloak of displacement deep down in
hell. And for the location of the heart of blackest pitch, the lich wants the
book of the graves, carried by Archmage in the tower of Mephistoteles.

And finally, to perform the ritual itself the lich requires fresh knowledge,
of what, he is reluctant to spell out, giving vague clues, mentioning
Kariliun, Habib and Keiiah. Also mentioning Aldiniss crystals and the Oryx.
For some reason claiming that there are no reason to mention the latest work
of Kteng. Asking about the enslavement of dragons.

Drained of energy Zubi leaves the meeting, somehow feeling as if she came out
short in the negotiations with the lich. No doubt Zubi will come out of this
without any sanity left in her, not that it bothers her, somewhere deep
inside her, she can feel it, growing...
