Kimemrak the Harai Goshi
DescriptionThe most unusual feature about this arial are his feathers: depending on how the light hits them, they appear just about any color from pale golden to almost black. His eyes are pale green. A simple golden band is worn on his left hand. He wears loose-fitting dark clothing and several knives are strapped to his arms and thighs, giving him the shady look of a mercenary or assassin.

RoleChapter 9 The Golden Child Added Sun Aug 17 19:14:05 2008 at level 1:The acolytes of Corrlaan were pleased with the success of their mission; they had stolen the child of prophecy from his unsavory family with no need for violence or confrontation. His birthmark of an angel proved he was the one foreordained by his birth beneath the Maiden to eliminate the enemies of the Light. It was said that he would bear great suffering in his spirit, yet wisdom and balance, too, and that he would be of great help to the Light in its darkest hours.
While they knew his life might well be one of strife, they tried to teach the child the calm and serenity to bear it. He learned advanced meditative techniques, humanoid anatomy, and how to treat basic wounds. He did not really remember his true parents, and soon the monestary was the only life he could recall. The acolytes named him Kimemrak, derived from ancient Arial words meaning 'Golden One.'
Fate was not yet done with the boy, and would continue to unfold in ways that none had foreseen. He vanished from the monestary one night, and it took the monks several years to put together half of what had happened.

RoleChapter 8 Dark Prophecy Added Sun Aug 17 19:15:47 2008 at level 1:The cultists of Beroxxus were pleased with the success of their mission; they had stolen the child of prophecy from the unwitting monks who had been raising him. His birthmark of a winged morosa demon proved he was the one destined by his birth beneath the Chariot to rain war upon the enemies of the cult. It was said he would kill many a paladin, immune to the holy wrath the soup-eating fools tried to call upon him. He would know great suffering of spirit as only those most favored by the Dark Baron could, and it would make him strong.
The orders to the underlings who snatched him were clear: they were to avoid bloodshed if at all possible to avoid drawing attention to themselves. The bumbling acolytes of Corrlaan clearly had no idea they held something so important to the faithful of the Ill Omen, and it would not do to tip them off if it could be helped.
The hatchling knew that these were the kind of people the good monks had meant for him to fight, and though he was still a child he did his best to win free of the hidden temple which quickly became his prison. After a few nights, he managed to snatch a sword from one careless guard, and, stabbing him, began to make a daring escape. Unfortunately, it was the Hexarch Anzilonus himself who he found blocking his way at the last door he needed to clear to freedom.
The assassin-priest sneered at Kimemrak. "A sword? You think you can beat me with that?" Trembling, the arial lunged for his heart. With deadly grace, Anzilonus flowed to the side, snatching the child's swordarm at the wrist. With a sickening crunch, he brutally snapped it. The last thing the child heard before he passed out from the pain were the gloating words of the Hexarch: "What use is a sword without the strength to wield it?"
The spirit of Kimemrak could not be broken, not so easily, not completely. Yet, after that night he chose to bide his time and seem to give himself over to the will of his captors. They gave him a new name, Azirifan, derived from ancient Arial words meaning 'Cursed One.' He was taught to bear torture and physical pain, to cripple others in battle, to use poisons, to murder from stealth.
Years passed. Perhaps in time he came to identify in some way with his captors and their beliefs. But fickle fate had not yet played its last hand, and one night, the boy again disappeared from his current home. Again, it would take the cultists some years to piece together half of what happened, though they would remain as ignorant to the greater picture as the monks of Corrlaan.

RoleChapter 7 Again and Again Added Sun Aug 17 19:17:52 2008 at level 1:The acolytes of Corrlaan were quite pleased to have their Golden Child back. What fortune that the Beroxxus cultists had no idea what they had under their nose! Bad luck, of course, that they had chosen to snatch the child and try to bend him towards their perverse aims, but if they had realized what they held, surely they would have slain him on the spot. If young Kimemrak was reticent to talk about his ordeal, well, that was perfectly understandable. They would return him to his proper life and training, and Corrlaan's healing of the spirit would come to him in time.
They taught him to fight with staff and spear, to turn an attacker's momentum against them, and to make of his hands and feet weapons, the better to defend himself if something should happen again. A year later, happen it did, with the Beroxxus cultists reclaiming him. Beroxxus clearly had smiled upon them in that the acolytes had still not realized the truth about the orphan they were raising. They resumed his training in crippling strikes, strangling techniques, and the art of escaping unseen after a successful murder.
A year later he was reclaimed, and again, and again, and again, and again. Both faiths had read the signs of his birth; correctly, yet, telling an incomplete truth. Each had missed the reading of the other, as well as a third truth: as signaled by the Celestial Eye, the dominant sign of his birth was neither the Maiden rising nor the Chariot ascendant, but the Lotus. The time had come for it too to have its day.

#23792, "Kimemrak's Role Chapter 6"
|
RoleChapter 6 Love Found Added Sun Aug 17 19:20:06 2008 at level 1:Kimemrak, or Azirifan as he was known to the cult of the Ill Omen (he had come to think of the latter as his second or last name) had reached his sixteenth summer. He was spending it again with the Beroxxus cult, which had begun to give him training missions outside the hidden temple's walls, trusting by now that he was one of them and had no interest in running off. After all, the boy had somehow been stolen from their "secret" temple four times, and while those were obviously just coincidences, surely the outside world could be no more perilous than that. The most devout, in any religion, are not always the wisest.
It might seem that Kimemrak's spirit was a fickle one, to allow two opposing faiths to alternately steal him away and attempt to mold him into what they believed the stars had promised them. Only on the fact that he was born special and destined for greatness could they agree. It is true that he was never quite sure which of their paths and prophecies, if either, was correct; after his first encounter with Hexarch Anzilonus, he had never resisted either religion's kidnap attempts again.
In retrospect, it would become clear to him that his indecision was simply an indication that his heart had not encountered what it desired yet.
He met her in the market; a young arial maid selling flowers. Her name was Saeli, and he was lost at first sight of her. A cold downpour drenched the city and them both. Kimemrak offered her his cloak, no less drenched but she didn't seem to mind, and a walk home. Immediately, there was a connection between them. They found themselves making excuses to see the other, talk longer, linger together just a little longer. Young love bloomed.
That winter, Corrlaan's monks returned to steal Kimemrak back. It had taken sometime, but eventually they reasoned that the missing boy might again be with Beroxxus cultists, as he had the last five times he had vanished. For the first time, they returned home empty-handed; although they did not know it, it was because this time he had chosen to evade them. Their own temple was much farther from the town, and would have made visiting Saeli all the harder.
The next spring, the couple fled the town in the night and eloped. Both the stargazing factions of the faiths of Corrlaan and Beroxxus still seek their missing chosen one.

|
RoleChapter 5 Love Lost Added Sun Aug 17 19:21:09 2008 at level 1:Kimemrak and Saeli settled down as happy newlyweds, several days ride from the town where they had met. With his life savings (much of it ill-gotten) they bought a small farm and worked the land together. Neither had ever been so happy.
One day, Saeli went to the nearest town to barter for some supplies while Kimemrak plowed the fields. As the day gave way to twilight, she had still not returned. He grew concerned and flew towards town.
The devastation and frightened townsfolk told the tale: a dark knight had assaulted the town, seeking pillage and lives for his souldrinking spear. Several of the villagers were swiftly slain. One of the villagers had had the presence of mind to ride for help at the first sign of the attack and had returned with a local paladin to fight off the marauder. While the paladin knew most of the folk who lived in the village well, he had never met Saeli. Finding her hiding behind the feed store, he assumed she was one of the dark knight's cohorts hiding from his retribution and cut her down. The anti-paladin had feasted upon her bones, mocking the paladin and laughing, before being driven off. There was barely enough left to bury.
Kimemrak was lost to grief for over a month. His fields grew wild, untended. Between attempts to drink his heartache away, he could do little but weep.

#23790, "Kimemrak's Role Chapter 4"
|
RoleChapter 4 Epiphany Added Sun Aug 17 19:22:25 2008 at level 1:Slowly, Kimemrak came to a moment of clarity.
All of his life he had been told he was special, that life and the Gods owed him great things, that a life beyond compare would be his. He had never wanted any of it. Only one thing in all the world had made him truly happy, and now he was heartsick with the loss of her, with the randomness and injustice of it all.
He re-examined the philosophies he had been taught. The way of Beroxxus, he thought, was a lie; although he now hurt so much more for it, he had known true happiness for a time. Yet the things the acolytes of Corrlaan had taught him also seemed hollow; while they spoke to him of peace, he had always known that they expected him one day to eschew the peaceful way himself and help clean up their problems. Neither those claiming virtue nor those claiming vice as their focus were innocent in the death of his beloved.
He thought again upon the many things he had learned as understudy to angel and demon alike. To bring his love back from Marcatis' grasp was beyond his talents, but to send others to death's embrace was not. Half his life he had heard it was his calling to strike down the wicked, half of his life that it was to murder the pure. He realized with a start that both were true.
Although it tore him apart, he could not stop loving Saeli. To give himself over to his twofold destiny and seek as much bloody retribution by proxy for her death was the greatest act of love and sacrifice his suffering mind could conceive.

RoleChapter 3 Twilight Chameleon Added Wed Aug 20 23:01:01 2008 at level 16:Though he himself does not realize it, Kimemrak's behavior mirrors the duality of his upbringing. When he hunts a principled person, he reflexively adopts the behaviors and methodologies he learned from the Beroxxus cult while they were teaching him to murder such people. Similarly, when his quarry is a wicked soul, he instinctively falls into the patterns and thinking he learned from the Corrlaan monks while being taught to kill the dark-hearted.
In other words, when fighting evil, his actions and speech lean more towards the good. When fighting good, his actions and speech lean more towards evil.
Without really understanding why, he also finds himself driven to prefer to strike whichever force is strongest in Thera at the time, to the best of his ability to gauge it. Despite this he is not a perfect agent for balance, even within his limits; when goodness abounds, he does seek pure opponents, but as he slips into more evil moods he is also more willing to seize upon the weakness of wicked or to strike them first if he perceives a danger to himself.

#23788, "Kimemrak's Role Chapter 2"
|
RoleChapter 2 Executive Summary - Read this chapter for the short version so far Added Sat Aug 23 14:31:18 2008 at level 18:At varying points in his childhood, Kimemrak was raised by diametrically opposed cults of light and darkness. Each believed him one destined to kill many of their enemies. The plans of both went awry when he fell in love and ran away from their influence. Tragically, his young bride died, with good and evil alike arguably culpable. He roams the world now, inside a very broken man, hunting both light and dark in a misguided tribute to his lost love.
Kimemrak has, unbeknownst to him, a subconscious drive towards balance, possibly as a result of his infant exposure to the Prismatic Veil. When Light is strong in Thera, he not only feels the urge to attack those of the Light, but also becomes more evil in his own behavior. When Darkness reigns, he not only feels compelled to seek its death, but also resembles goodness more in his speech and behavior.

|
RoleChapter 1 Warden of Balance Added Tue Aug 26 21:00:16 2008 at level 20:After some trials, conversations, and recommendations won, Kimemrak finds himself a home on the Island of Balance. Though he never lied to any he spoke to, Kimemrak also did not point out that he is eager to see light and dark alike perish, even when it might not be strictly in the best instances of balance.
At times he cannot himself act, he often tells those of the weaker side where to find those of the stronger who might be alone and vulnerable. In this way and others he hopes to right the balance indirectly.
Grimthor, the current Rhyme of Resistance has stated his opinion that the Nexus should only attack an unbalancing force when its tip upon the balance is at its most extreme. Kimemrak is among those who read the libraries of the island differently. While the books say that he must hunt when the scales tip to their utmost, they do not say that he can not or should not hunt at an earlier point to perserve the balance. This he does, quietly, seeking nothing to be gained by confronting the leadership concerning his disobedience. Though in many ways he is an abnormal assassin, stealth and subtlety still serve his purpose well in this. He sees no conflict in his disobedience of the leadership to more attentively serve balance; after all, he himself walks a balance between principle and expedience, between light and dark.
