Sunchuaen the Hand of Faith, Imperial Priest

Chapter 5

Sunchuaen was born the son of a farmer in the struggling village of Absalom,
a small farming community now overcast with gloom and misery. By the time
Sunchuaen was a young man, things had gotten so bad that he had given up
farming to study as a physician full time, a job that seemed to bring with it
an endless supply of sick, wounded, and otherwise gravely ill patients.
Sneaking into Arkham to visit the Temples wasn't easy, or safe, but Sunchuaen
knew it was necessary. With many of the elders dying or having succumbed to
the evil that preyed on their village, Sunchuaen knew that anything he could
do to stave off the darkness was worth the risk. Unfortunately, by the time
Sunchuaen had earned his place among the Guild he had lost his father and
uncle. His brother was alive, but his behavior suggested that it was only a
matter of time before he would be possessed too. It seemed as though even his
newfound abilities as a cleric would not be enough to protect his family and
community.

Things has gotten so bad in the weeks following that Sunchuaen had to add
hours to his travels to carefully avoid encountering the bandits or possessed
villagers, turned by evil, on his way to and from Arkham. Eventually, the
darkness overcame Absalom almost entirely. The possessed townsfolk grew
stronger, to the point where Sunchuaen simply could not risk returning.

Feeling desperate, Sunchuaen approached a member of the Empire. Even though
he did not agree with the ways of the Empire, he felt that if he could
advance high enough within his Guild and offer his services to the Empire,
even temporarily, he might perhaps be given a legion of soldiers with which
he could, once and for all, free Absalom of its curse. The Imperial Priest
told him that once he had been given the approval of the Gods and therefore
proven to be a worthy cleric, they would give him the Bloodoath.

As time passed Sunchuaen began to lose his grip on the love for his family,
and slowly but surely drifted into the net of the Empire's rhetoric. While
once he sought only to use the Empire for a good deed and be gone from it, he
now embraced it's propaganda of power, wealth, and subjugation. Today,
Sunchuaen has all but forgotten about his pledge to the village of Absalom
and bears no resemblance to the well intentioned boy he once was, seeking
only to rule and dominate.

Chapter 4

Sunchuaen's vision blurred momentarily and the wondrous view of The High
Court of Order faded into grayness. He again found himself facing the false
marble door, this time more powerful than we he had arrived. He felt a tinge
of appreciation and of earnest accomplishment, feelings that were quickly
dissolved by his self-absorption and narcissism.

Walking through the streets of Hamsah Mu'tazz towards his Guildhall,
Sunchuaen glanced to the east for a brief second, staring across the waters
of the Aryth in the direction of Absalom, before continuing on.

He felt nothing.

Chapter 3

As Sunchuaen again stood before The High Court of Order and spoke only of
himself to his Lord, he was fallibly incapable of hearing the conceitedness
in his own voice. He had upset Trabryn, and for the first time in his life,
he truly felt afraid. Not even in the presence of the Empress had Sunchuaen
even felt that his life could be altered in such immutable ways in a single
instant. It wasn't until this moment that a present but fleeting sense of
remorse splashed his conscience in form of memories of Absalom, shards of
guilt he thought he had long repressed forever.

Trabryn granted him the power he had come for, but he felt completely shunned
regardless. Until he did right by the people who he became a priest to save,
Trabryn would not know him as a man of true dedication.

Chapter 2

For the first time in years over five years, Sunchuaen walked the dusty
streets of Absalom. Not to his surprise, it was greatly unchanged. A few
tried souls still lived, worked, and prayed in the tiny village. Sunchuaen
did not recognize many of them, and vice versa.

As he carefully lay a hand on one of the possessed, no aura or crimson flames
appeared. Sunchuaen realized that for all his power, for all of the might of
the Empire, he had no supplication or power to aid them. The possessed were
truly beyond his care. As this realization sand into Sunchuaen's mind, a deep
sadness that he had not felt since his last moments in Absalom attacked him,
while at the same time helping to dissolve his arrogance. Not knowing what
else to do, Sunchuaen, with an impetuously heavy heart, continued towards the
few broken building that made up Absalom.

Entering the Dusty Bird, Sunchuaen saw the first familiar face since he
entered the village. Feeling and looking uneasy, Sunchuaen took a seat at the
bar. The innkeeper did not break from wiping down the bar to acknowledge him.
Sunchuaen wondered if the innkeeper simply did not recognize him or did not
care to greet him, at this point either were possible. In a soft voice, one
that carried with it more honesty than any words he had spoke since the Oath,
Sunchuaen said, 'I do hope that the villagers find solace in something,
though I know not what it could be in this place.' He continued with a
monologue that emphasized the guilt and grief he had found. When he was done
and silent, the innkeeper responded with only a gaze, a gaze that felt like
it had been upon him for all these years. Then, much to Sunchuaen's relief,
the innkeeper gave a tiny nod and went back to his work. With that, Sunchuaen
left.

As he made his way back to Arkham, Sunchuaen felt the same helplessness that
had haunted him before. He knew though that on a personal level, he deserved
to feel the way he did, though he would never admit it to his peers.

Role

Chapter 1

Now a member of the Divine sect wielding great power from his God, and having
confronted the personal strife of his past, Sunchuaen felt that great things
lay ahead of him and the Empire. The Empress seemed to like him, or at least
the fact that he was a priest, and he felt as though her favor would come
easily. With the bargained help of others, he had grown his donations to more
than satisfactory levels, a task which is of course always one in progress.
After his session with Trabryn and his visit to Absalom, Sunchuaen began to
construct slightly modified views of his role in the Empire.

No longer struggling with the separation between the Empire and his religion,
Sunchuaen realized that the only thing that divided his dedication was his
arrogance and selfishness. Even if it was an Empire of evil, it brought order
to Thera, which is positive. Likewise, bringing all of Thera under Imperial
civilization meant things like commerce, soldiers to defend it's citizens,
and most importantly, physicians. Sunchuaen began to see that using the
Empire to serve himself was not to serve anything at all, and did not
strengthen the Empire in any substantial way. He now began to see that the
end to many of his struggles, both inner and outward, lay in serving the
Empire as a physician and not a seeker of power. Though power may come
anyway, it was up to Sunchuaen to wield it honestly.

Sunchuaen hoped that Trabryn would see the effect his presence had on him.
His prior dedication was, like many of the Empire, only to himself, even if
it was manifested as a cause. Though still utterly loyal to the Empress,
Sunchuaen now felt that his dedication was shifting and no longer channel
through himself, but instead was directly focused on the Empire and Order. No
longer blinded by the glint of his own ego, Sunchuaen may very well lead the
Empire to great power, one that while serving the goals of the Empire could
still benefit Absalom.

For the first time in a long time, Sunchuaen felt responsible for something
bigger than himself.
