Chapter 1

He felt his long spikey pincers sink deeply into the wild womans flesh.
With a final scream Ambra Starsong collapsed at the attacking bombardier
beetles six feet. Strangely the patrons of the Copeham Inn barely seemed to
take notice of the battle that just unfolded around them. So common was the
bloodshed that it barely fazed them these days. Suddenly in the blink of an
eye the beetle began to bulge and morph into the shape of a man. Oktetko's
usually emotionless face showed a slight sense of glee at his triumph over
the fallen chaos spreader. A young adventurer went to grapple for the
druids things, but Oktetko easily knocked him back. As he was falling the
strangest thing happened, he stopped. Not righted himself, just simply halted
in mid air, feet off the ground, floating. Then suddenly everything stopped,
Oktetko tugged at his ears as he seemed to suddenly go deaf.

Then suddenly he heard a pair of voices in unison, but it emanated from
inside his head, not the room around him. "We've been watching you,
Oktetko Von Gesetzhausen.", was all it said in a monotone duet. Then
suddenly they were there, two beings in gray. It was almost as if they were
there the whole time, and he just suddenly noticed them. They were so
strangely nondescript that it almost hurt Oktetko's head to look at them.
They were neither short nor tall, fat nor skinny, their features neither that
of a man nor woman, and their skin seemed as gray as their long gray cloaks.
Oktetko could not move so much as to even blink his eye. Youve served
the Order since they day you were born, without even realizing it Oktetko.
Suddenly his brief life began to flash before him.

The flashes seemed to be random moments of his life at first. A baby Oktetko
pushing stones on the floor into a perfect circle, a small boy organizing the
family library, an older boy training stray mutts to serve as obedient guard
dogs, and as a teenager turning his corrupt guard father into the local
magistrate. Oktetko always good at puzzles immediately saw the pattern to
these images carefully pulled from his mind. Even the memory of turning in
his own father did not disturb him nearly as much as realizing that whoever
these beings were, they were there at each of these events, perhaps always
there watching him. "As long as you serve Order you serve the will of the
Perpetium." The gray ones spoke in unison. "Fate has decreed a special
purpose in you, it is time you discovered what it is. When you have done
something worthy of bringing about Order, seek out its Guardian in a place of
calm amidst the sands of chaos.", chimed the voices in his head.

Suddenly time seemed to start again, and the young adventurer hit the ground
with a large thud, and the gray cloaked figures were gone. Oktetko was
overwhelmed by the strange event that unfolded. Then suddenly a wave of
resolve washed over him, as it seemed everything in his life fit together, a
renewed sense of purpose. As he stepped out of the Copeham Inn and back onto the
always bustling Trade road, he spied his destiny rising up from the
heart of the city like a great finger pointing the way to heaven. He made
haste, as the Blood Tribunal Spire beckoned...
