Chapter 4

Born in a specimen batch of his kin, the pool of the Elder Brain was the
beginning of a hard life. Thousands of eggs hatched into tadpoles in this
dark birthing water - and after a decade of survival, their numbers became
few as the Elder Brain feasted on the weakest as food. The few young that
lasted were considered the fittest and were allowed ceremorphosis. Nothing
but a mature tadpole, they were inserted into the ear or nostril of a
helpless humanoid were they feasted on the brain which they would replace...a
parasite that takes control of the old body to become something much more
twisted. Most illithid preferred the drow, their brains considerably a better
base for the transformation but this one was different - the Elder Brain
probed for years the future for a beacon of power and had finally found
victory from a human. His passion and short-lived life would impact the Mind
Flayers forever. Just how was unseen...

The transformation was changed, the ritual broken - as the Elder Brain
instructed, the growing tissue of the illithid was controlled. Sculpted to
keep the human body alive and not consumed, the child was taught respect of
it's environment to halt the corrosion of the facade body. Perversion of the
host was limited, it's visible changes kept to a minimum. Most would mistake
the illithid as a sea-barring human or perhaps a drown victim - his pale
mauve skin the effect of the sea. The human was not a slave this time, as the
countless before....he was one of them.

Chapter 3

Within the aging process where a mind flayer develops, it was clearly visible
that this one stood apart. A natural leader amongst even his equal, his
emotion was visible unlike his elders - a mind flayer experiences intense
emotion but internalizes everything, the only sense of happiness coming
during the consumption of a brain that displays only as anger and hatred. The
constant dark emotions of this child were vividly present and drew others to
do as he would, their self-satisfaction tied to his desire - he used his
commanding voice, even though he was fully capable of telepathic discussion.
He pushed the illithids to their first visible strike on their neighbors
(aboleths and kuo-toa of the Underdark Sea), increasing the slaves and sway
of their kin tenfold - he was their champion. The one thing the collective
and Elder Brain did not foresee was his vision and followed departure.
Short-lived and seeking to escape death, the driven child of only twenty
years was losing direction amongst his kind - their problems were not his for
he would die but a teenager in their eyes.

Driven to a path of self-preservation, the young illithid made his way to the
surface to sate his curiosity - full-well knowing that if he did not venture
above that his chances of living were nil. Leaving his kind was easier than
any other race would think - the mind flayers were not fools to acknowledge
self-seeking needs. His lie could not be kept amongst the magi, but it could
be contained easily in the church. Mockingly accepting the position of a man
"seeking redemption", this young healer would grow to lead a force to
accomplish any goal he desired - at any cost, for his sake alone.

Chapter 2

The path had begun with the Lord's blessing, a strong challenge given to
provide direction - and in always the first stage of conquest was research.
He had learned valuable lessons from many races, as his tentacles feasted and
drew knowledge from the brains it so delighted in. His mistakes were
repaired, his time beginning, and his weave of intrigue cast over the
mindless cattle to reel in those of use. The divine he conversed helped ease
the lack of mental stimulation found amongst the "farm", but it was a
surprise to feel the nagging connection of the Elder Brain.

"You left the collective, Xhenod."
"You know why, Elder."
"Have you fallen to the sways and level of the food?"
"No institution of man shall hold me, Elder - nor of illithid."
"So you forsake your kind's need of you."
"It is entertaining to think you assume I would 'die for the cause' when none
of my kind has done the same for my dying body."

He felt the lash of the mental knife - it had been awhile since he felt such
pain. The connection was severed but he knew it would not last long. If they
wanted him dead, he would be - they were waiting for results just as Lord
Zulghinlour was.

Chapter 1

Having reached the pinnacle of his guild, his aging body pushed him further
and faster to become more than the Lord Zulghinlour expected. Gathering a
troop of the Chasm under his strict leadership, they rampaged through the
first circles of the Inferno and took with them the hearts and spoils of the
Archdevils Baphomet and Mammon. It was a small test of their ability with his
limitations, where Xhenod noted what to fix and whom to replace - but his
goal to research and do what known had done before was beginning. He only
needed to find the right tools and right words to move the 'cattle' to his
end, their lack of drive and direction would become his will alone....and the
aboleths would feel the coming of Xhenod soon. It was there he believed he
might learn of a cure to his twisted rotting body of humanity and illithid.
