Gwevfeldr Goldenbeard the Weaver of the Elements
DescriptionAbout average in height for his people at six feet three inches, this pointy- eared man is obviously of the elven folk. His fair hair and brilliant green eyes make it impossible to mistake him as anything else. But his garb seems different from other elves, not typical at all, but rather, well, more suited to a dwarf! In fact, as you look more closely he looks bigger than most of the other elves, you might even say fat, but more just stocky, or filled-out. On his face you can clearly make out what any teenage human child might be deluding himself was a beard, but in fact is mere peach fuzz. It's light and soft looking, but seems unlikely to ever bloom into a rich full beard. Even so, no matter what else, it's clear upon looking at this dwarven elf that

RoleChapter 6 And so it begins... Added Wed Oct 24 01:25:29 2007 at level 1:Gwevfeldr has no idea what his name was originally, if he even had one. But even if he did, his earliest and only memories are with his "family", a dwarven family led by Torgildr Goldenbeard. Torgildr and his wife Hvetlina have four natural children, three boys and one girl. When, on one of his monthly trips to Balator's marketplace to sell the adamantite clothing he forges for a living and which the town lawmen love, he happened to pass by the orphanage, his usual routine forever changed his life, and the life of Gwevfeldr. Torgildr, a pious and goodly dwarf, would usually stop by the orphanage on his way home, his purse full, and make a generous donation. But this time when he approached the entrance he almost tripped, stumbling over a swaddled package no bigger than a little emerald pixie. Cursing as only a dwarf can, he paused and picked up the bundle, peered inside and lo and behold! an elfin baby. Call it fate, call it divine, call it magic, but holding the tiny baby in his massive, forge-strengthened arms kindled in him a great wellspring of love, and he could not fathom leaving the child behind. And so, leaving a sizeable donation as always, he left the orphanage with more than he'd ever intended.
Raising Gwevfeldr, for that is what Torgildr named him, after Hvetlina's father's brother, was no easy matter. Elves are not like dwarves, and those differences are never so obvious as in childhood. Dwarf children play rough, a result of their natural heartiness and cocky strength. Elves are entirely opposite, frail in form if stronger in the mind. But Gwevfeldr was in his mind a dwarf, not an elf. He'd never known an elf, never known any life but that of the dwarves, and so like all boys he felt an unyielding and indefatigable compulsion to compete with his brothers and with the other boys of the village. He would gamely step up to play the various games and to join in the fighting and such. And invariably he would lose, often receiving serious wounds. Hvetlina especially suffered these many years, worrying that Gwevfeldr would simply misjudge the weakness of his own body and be injured beyond saving. Gwevfeldr's childhood thus instilled in him an inner fortitude and bullish obstinance that is so often characteristic of dwarven culture. At the same time though he also developed a keen sense of love and the importance of family, both immediate and extended, even to your village.
As he aged to what humans would call late teens, it finally became clear even to him that he would never be the doughty warrior that his friends and brothers might be, or a smith like his adoptive father. Strangely, this feeling in his gut had been growing for years, but he had never been able to identify it. Such a feeling could not remain anonymous forever though, waiting only for the spark to set it free. That stimulus appeared in the form of a traveling wizard, a human invoker. Gwevfeldr of course knew of magic, everyone does, but he'd never had much dealing with it, growing up with dwarves as he did. While most dwarves are comfortable enough with it as a fact of life, they do not speak of it much, ever since the Great Forgetting, which is what they call the time when their kind lost the ability to manipulate mana and call the power of magic to themselv

RoleChapter 5 Fruits of labors, and kinship issues Added Sat Oct 27 16:42:55 2007 at level 20:Gwevfeldr has recently seen the beginning of the fruits of his labors. While travelling deep beneath the eastern city of Arkham, in a crypt infested with zombies and skeletons, one of his family's most hated enemies, a duergar, came to cause trouble. As they always do. Well, he and his companions brought the fight to the duerg, and all Gwevfeldr's studies and practice paid off as he spoke the words true and made the proper motions and at just the right time he cent a cyclone into the body of the duerg, ending his wicked life. There was no dance of joy, Hvetlina raised her children with a sense of value of life, even duergar life, but there was without doubt a sense both of satisfaction in doing what needed to be doing, and in the feeling that magic had once again shown it's utility and strength, here in a life and death situation. His studies and his practice are tedious, to be sure, but not terribly, and they provide so much more than they ask.
At the same time, Gwevfeldr has come across a new problem, or not so much a problem as something he hadn't considered. Twice now he's been called "kin" or "kinsman" by some stranger elfs. He's not a fool and knows he was born an elf, but in his heart and spirit he's a dwarf, and his family are those who raised him and were with him his whole life. Not some elf who abandoned him as a child! He respects them and their lives, but like most dwarves, finds them a bit too haughty and standoffish, and, perhaps most important, far too disrespectful of good ale! In short he has no problem with them and expects to make some friends among them, as they share common enemies and some goals, but he doesn't in any way feel kin to any of them, at all.

RoleChapter 4 Life Added Fri Nov 2 17:55:07 2007 at level 35:Life is not easy, he knows, and was taught by his parents. And life in the greater mix of thera has proven them right. And, even in a thick skulled dwarf-like mind such as Gwevfeldr's, proven that though in spirit and soul and heart and everything that might matter he is dwarf, in body at least he is still of his damned frail elven heritage. He has tried to take the battle to his enemies, protected as best he can, but he is as yet not ready for it. He knows the magic is the key, and it will make all the difference, and so he applies himself with ever greater determination. He has made some friends or at least friendly acquaintances, and he is glad for that, as he misses his home and close family and extended family of the village. This sometimes makes him lash out a bit when people call him "elf" or any of the many euphemisms for the elves. It just reminds him of his differences, and how much he misses his family and friends. Even so, his heart is pure and gruff though he is, as are all of his people (dwarves), he would never think of anything but doing right. And castigating himself if somehow he does wrong.

RoleChapter 3 Praeton the Dwarf Murderer Added Sun Nov 4 23:52:23 2007 at level 38:Gwevfeldr had a very, very disturbing event recently, one that is staying with him, and which changes how he feels about some people. While in Mortorn he came across Praeton, a maran of the fortress and a paladin, a holy knight, both. Normally Gwevfeldr would be delighted to meet and make friends with such a person, but in this instance he was shocked and horrified to see what this supposed beacon of light was doing. For before his very eyes, Praeton attacked one of Gwevfeldr's kin, Brulgar the Archmage, in Mortorn. Brulgar, who, as anyone who merely looks at him knows, has devoted himself utterly to the destruction of the duergar, the very same enemies of the maran and paladin, has not only done nothing to incurr such murder, but he is one of the strongest allies we have in the war against the duergs! And why did this Praeton seek to kill Brulgar? Because he wanted Brulgar's hammer!! Praeton's greed and lust for something has made him into a murderer of one who by his very nature cannot be dark, and who is one of the most powerful fighters against the duergar. Praeton simply killed him, and took his bloodmoney and stained loot. Gwevfeldr does not understand how he can do such a thing and sleep at night, let alone be who he is, but for Gwevfeldr, he has lost all respect for him and though he still seeks to join the fortress, will have nothing to do with Praeton. Certainly not until Praeton seeks to make amends for his horrible murder. Once he is part of the Fortress, Gwevfeldr will likely send a scroll to all of them discussing this very topic. Until then, he will give Praeton, and anyone else who committs such horried acts a wide berth indeed.

RoleChapter 2 Midlife. Added Wed Dec 5 19:42:13 2007 at level 44:It's been many years now since Gwevfeldr left home and come to the mainlands of Thera, to see what he could do to help, and join with the fortress of the light. As with all who grow from youth to adulthood, his views have matured as much as anything and he has found that being away from his home and living among non-dwarfs has been both boon and bane. He doesn't have as much a problem with elfs as he once did - though by no means is he chummy with them - and has grown to understand more of how the world works. But at the same time he has found it that much more important to constantly make sure he and his values are not lost in the many voices. These people need some good solid dwarf smarts and wisdom and if nobody else will stand up, then Gwevfeldr will do the best he can, though obviously not the smartest nor wisest. At the same time, he recently was shown both the highs and lows of living a life of principle and conviction. In the same evening he was made a maran by the ladyship Baerinika, something of immense value and pride, and mere hours later he was slain by several of the empire together with their centurions. A good reminder that no matter how well things might be, the dark still has great power and there is much to be done. And of course, all along the way, all of his life is one and the same as the magic he commands. The same stubborn thickheadedness he brings to everything he brings twofold to pursuing the craft, and making others aware of the value of the mana gifts from the lordship Twist, that all therans can enjoy. His great annoyance and pity for the magic hating villagers is second only to the dedication to making thera safe from the evil that walks it. He is happy that Darascus was made Captain, putting once again a mage in a leadership role. Such is needed, he feels, to ensure solid use of the great blessings of magic in the war against the wicked. As the second half of his life now begins, he is looking forward to making a difference.

RoleChapter 1 Philosophy Added Tue Dec 11 00:09:49 2007 at level 51:There has been some bit of drama and discussion during his life, and some pointed debate of late and so it's important that Gwevfeldr make clear how he thinks. His parents taught him right and wrong, and to judge not just intentions but actions. For them, for their values, it comes to making a choice. Every choice, every decision. And you are judged by what you do, how you behave, the actions you take. So, the two good examples are people like dern and brulgar on the one hand, and the nexuns and outlanders and many of the "so called balance" on the other. Dern's sick. Brulgar is spending his life fighting duergar. He isn't hunting anyone, he's not making any choice to hurt any person of a goodly nature. He should be left alone, as should Dern, who while he might strike out at those who come to him, he does not follow, does not hunt, and is only sick, not evil. Gwevfeldr's parents taught him that while good and evil are tangible things in thera, the simple shining of the wicked crimson is both enough and not enough. You must understand and see what a person does. Hence the choice. And the other side of that are the nexuns, as an easy example. They might claim one thing or another, but they choose, they make the free choice, to kill goodly people. To murder them. And to murder the good giants on the volcano and other good people of thera. It's murder, and it must be stopped. They aren't just sitting on the sidelines or merely reacting to others attacking them. The good folks of thera are being killed by them and they must be stopped. In some ways they are worse than the scions or other obvious darkhearts because the nexuns don't seem dangerous, don't seem like they are evil. But what they do is evil, and they are not to be trusted. This goes for all of the so called balance. Especially those who strike at the good souls of thera. When Gwevfeldr sees them murdering the giants or elfs or his own kin of course, he goes and protects them, lightning and fire and water as necessary, to stop them and strike them down. It comes down to the choices people make, and he watches and sees and if they do evil, they are treated as evil. Certainly at least while doing the acts. He is happy to explain this to them, and help them learn the reality which is that there is a right and wrong, good and evil, and no such thing as this gray they keep talking about. But only after they are stopped and they have faced consequences for their evil deeds. Then they will have learned the lesson perhaps and be more amenable to a true seeking of the light.
