Chapter 7

"Die you paladin scum!" The voice echoed over the ring of the hammer
endlessly beating upon the anvil. "Bring the paladin scum to me!"
Gatusso stared out north in the general direction of the frozen tundra.
"Dead or alive!" yelled Feldar, captain of the Udgaardian patrols.

Gatusso's father, a blacksmith indentured in service to Udgaard Loke, often
dealt with Feldar as he inspected the quality and craftsmanship of the slave
collars which his family forged. The work was demeaning, especially for a
dwarf, but they all knew the importance of bringing the rebel giants and
paladins in line.

"C'mere lad, ye needin' learn these techniques. It bein' a must fer
when yer king!" Gatusso grumbled a bit and went to watch his uncle,
feeling dismayed at being unable to attend the gallows and watch the hanging.
The only thing Gatusso disliked more than watching his father or uncle shape
iron was his grandfather.

Chapter 6

The stench of old beer washed warmly over Gatusso. "Boy, yer bes' fit
fer nothin'." The old man hiccupped and nearly tipped over from his
precarious perch on the wooden log. Gatusso hated alcohol, hated those who
yielded to its escape. "Look atcha', yer no even made o' the earth."
It was true. Gatusso had been born strikingly different than the usual pale
gray or earthy beige customary of dwarfs. "Yer jus' a dog, boy, jus'
like yer pap," he mumbled to himself. Tired of the usual, Gatusso waited
for a quiet moment for the old man to lose himself in the bottom of his mug
and snuck out.

He knew he was different. He knew his circumstances, too. Where his family
might have resigned all notions of glory and prestige, he had not. He knew
it was not right, but he hated his grandfather.The old drunk spoke
disparagingly to the family and it was obvious he had long ago been broken.
Gatusso distanced himself from that, and while he appreciated his family he
felt an obligation to his heritage and his heart to do something more.
Though his blacksmithing skills were underdeveloped, he likened his strength
to being crafted through hardship and fire, cleansing all impurity of
character and weakness.

It was with this Gatusso carried his pride. But he knew his family would
tolerate their circumstances so long as they breathed.

Chapter 5

It is difficult to say whether Gatusso's uncle made matters better or
worse. The sly, slender dwarf took a liking to Gatusso: used him, even, as a
form of escape, though Gatusso would never realize this. This uncle
concocted a fabulous tale for Gatusso and would whisper imaginative stories
to the impressionable nephew of a grand kingdom dating back thousands and
thousands of years ago. "Ye be o' the line of kings o' the Coppa'
Kingdom, lad," he would whisper. "Yer born t'bring us back to our
mountain!"

Gatusso never noticed the veiled smirk with which he uttered these
prophecies. He only knew he was different than the others but for reasons he
could not fathom.

Chapter 4

Udgaard Loke was certainly shrewd. To quell the unrest of those in bondage
to him he often let particular servants go, usually those who showed little
talent in needed areas.It was obvious Gatusso would never amount to much of
a blacksmith and sending him to the mines would likely stir the resigned
nature of his family. So, Gatusso was released that year with a handful of
other felar, fire giants, and arials. This also gave reason for celebration,
further satiating the indentured servants of Udgaard. It was with little
reluctance that Gatusso left his family.

Chapter 3

Grumbling slightly to himself, Gatusso walked out of the fortified walls of
his comrades, making way for the Pass of Gol'Galath. He was tired of his
search ending in worn-out boots and cold nights under the shrubs lining many
of Thera's roads. He had not one positive response to his inquiry about a
Copper Kingdom.Akan, Delar-Tol, the Stone's Embrace, Galadon, and Hamsah
Mu'tazz. Even the well-kept records of the High Tower of Sorcery found
nothing in their massive libraries.

Gatusso would not be dismayed, though. All lasting things take work and
cunning to build. The frigid winds howling about the mighty misty mountains
would not deter Gatusso from his task, his dream of the Copper Kingdom.

Chapter 2

What I might think inferred isn't always obvious.

Gatusso was born an indentured-servant in Udgaard. He loathes paladins and
sees them as rebels. He hates the tundra giants and is generally skeptical
of any cloud giant until knowing where that giant is from. He does not know
much of dwarven heritage except what he encounters and picks up, although at
this point in his travels he has visited many of the dwarven locales.

Very stoic and implacable in nature, Gatusso believes an accomplishment
brings the most glory when it is done against equal adverse odds, meaning all
things in Thera are balanced. His pride mandates him to pursue this and he
finds great affection toward Nexus. It is this balance that brings
appropriate testing from all sides, garnering respect and significance and
best indicating purity of character.

As hinted at in an earlier chapter, Gatusso has been led to believe that his
heritage comes from a line of dwarves dating back to a Kingdom of Copper.
This may be true or completely and ridiculously untrue but the fact remains
that Gatusso is searching for it, so far unsuccessfully. He does know that
he looks different from all the other dwarfs he meets, even his immediate
family in Udgaard. But this could merely be a peculiar oddity of Gatusso.

Gatusso thinks it true and as he searches for this past kingdom he intends to
usher in his kingship the best way possible. That is, with all things being
equal. It is with this that his pride will be sated and he will have the
respect and honor worthy of a great and mighty dwarf.

Chapter 1

Seated at the ornate table of a lush study, his brow furrowed in purposeful
thought, the dwarf penned his words to the parchment in very precise
movements. He clutched his pen assertively, realizing the importance of this
task for it set the foundation for a vision greater than simple men imagine.
Dipping the feathered pen into the blackness of the ink and bringing the
faint candlelight closer to his work, he uttered the words aloud, the
finality of his voice filling the room.

History of the Copper Dwarfs
- Continue words with the gnomes of Hillcrest and find where their copper comes from
- Trace the origin of the above and learn any relation to dwarfs of past or present
- Further pursue any other leads relating to copper mining
- Scout the mountains and trails for any sign of a past mining operation
Keepers of the Balance
- Maintain devotion to the balance
- Build my reputation to be the Rhyme of Resistance
- Stave off the growing threat of maligned Villagers
Diamond in the Rough
- Impress the lord Daevryn accordingly
- Earn favor into his fold

With this, the dwarf found himself satisfied, having both direction and the
path to initiate it.
