Chapter 1

Cunning, intelligent, swift of hand and mind, Valryn possesses the potential
to accomplish great things. However, the whims of Fate and Gods are often
cruel, and life has often denied him such. Born among the poor and destitute
of Seantryn Modan, Valryn's life was often a day to day struggle. Though in
many ways disadvantaged, one does not think of such things as they seek to
survive, but merely takes whatever opportunities are presented. Though it
may seem despicable, his parents blessed him as best they could by sending
their child to the local thieves' guild. Though dangerous, the boy was fit
and bright enough that this provided him opportunity. Though his young age
kept him to menial tasks, he nonetheless learned much from observation and
practice within his small corner of the Guild.

As with most blessings, such good favor could not last forever. Sometime in
his early teens, the Guard located and raided their Guildhall. Though deadly
with stealth and surprise, his brethren stood no match to the well-trained
guardsmen. Realizing he had no escape, and stood no chance against such
warriors, Valryn calmly waited for death at the hands of one of the massive
minotaurs. Confused by this act, when all others died in battle or flight,
the beasts were both uncertain how to deal such a response, and mildly
approving of such a noble, courageous reaction to death. Chaining him, he
was taken to prison.

Weeks passed, and just as it appeared that his life would end ignomiously,
forgotten in his cramped cell, he was released. Taken from his cell, he was
scrubbed, given clean clothing, and brought before an older gentleman.
Mystified, he soon found that although his own life was relatively
insignificant, the method of his imprisonment had reached important ears.
Without explanation or inquiry, the older man presented two options. Death
by hanging as befitted a thief, or service to him. Uncertain how the old man
had accomplished his release, yet acutely aware of his second chance, Valryn
agreed to service redoubled his efforts at his craft. Completing each task
given with speed, efficiency, and secrecy, he began to learn more of his new
master. In time, he learned his service was actually for the very Empress
which at one point was ready to sentence his death. Recently, Valryn has
been given the task to travel to the mainland, learn of the people and
their forces, and begin recruitment of those who might fight for the Empress.
