Miette the Champion of Arms

Description

A cruel beauty with the effortless poise of an aristocrat, there's
something unmistakably regal in her severe cheekbones, the sharp line of
her jaw, her small straight teeth gleaming. She's the very picture of grace
and refinement. Her eyes though are a strange, vivid shade of pink, framed
by long lashes. Even half hidden sometimes as her dark hair falls across
her face, their wild intensity is striking.

The sky was dizzy with them, shimmering, overflowing. From her first excited
steps out of the cave, her very first steps out of the dreary underdark, she
was transfixed. She breathed the night air and looked quietly up at the
majestic ceiling of her new home, captivated. She forgot, for a moment, the
cold, sticky feeling where the blood soaked fabric of her dress touched her
skin.

Her little reverie didn't last long though. She knew she looked a mess, and
that just wouldn't do. She could hear the sound of running water nearby, but
even that was strange and new, with no walls echo from. As she made her way
towards the stream, she smiled bitterly at the idea of bathing like some
animal, but it couldn't be helped. Everyone on the surface lived like savages
and she would just have to adjust.

Alone in a small clearing near the refuge, the moon swolen and heavy
above her, Miette writes. As she finishes, she holds the little square
of parchement up towards the sky. The edges of the paper darken before
it suddenly comes alight. It's consumed in a heartbeat, the ashes
dancing on the slight breeze for a moment before scattering.
--
I don't grovel and beg the guidance of spirits. I know my path. I don't
kneel in the dirt and pray, but my body in motion, in battle, is more
holy a sacrament than any prostration could ever be. I ask nothing of
you. You're the shadows of a forgotten age, echos, faded memories. And
yet, your dream alone is bright enough still to illuminate my heart. For
this terrible and irresistable joy, for this cause that frees somehow
instead of binds, I'm simply grateful.
