Chapter 1

Brotalvis is a cautious fellow. Since leaving the academy, he
has discovered many of the things he needs to please his master.
Advancing quickly within his guild, he has realized the power of
manipulation, already convincing many that he is a friendly,
agreeable mage of the balance. Others he has tricked into alliances
and need by gifting mages and their allies with items he had no need
for at the time. However, others have seen him for the threat
he is. Striking many times the fool magic-haters, Brotalvis has
found his nemesis, a fool drunkard by the name of Jichii. This
fool bard has drawn the ire of the chaotic overseer Twist, a god
that frightens the very core of Brotalvis's body. He feels that
perhaps if he can slay the drunkard in Twist's name, the Overseer
will grant him some mystical boon. Whether or not this may
actually happen, who knows, for all know that Twist does not often
deign himself to care about mortal matters.

Brotalvis still works to gather the items that his master has
bid him to obtain. He has found two of them, a sleek black rod
and its' lesser counterpart, a sleek amber rod. He has only two
more artifacts to locate before he can inform his master of his
success. Other than gathering these artifacts, Brotalvis seeks to
gain power through manipulation, fear, and need. His methods
often change depending on who the subject is. Above all, Brotalvis
is a chaotic sort, prone to bouts of insecurity and insanity.

Chapter 2

With a final chant, the spell was complete. Finally.

With a muttered curse, Brotalvis returned to his study. It had
been six long years since he had left his old Master's charge.
Six years, he had fulfilled his desires by searching out his
mother and father. Having found both of them, Brotalvis was not
sure if he could have been more disappointed. At least he had
let his mother live. Looking once again to his desk, Brotalvis
sighed. It was not enough to kill his barbaric father, he thought
quietly. No, something happened when his hands had torn out the
man who fathered him throat. As the blood cascaded down his
father's chest, a hunger welled inside of Brotalvis. A hunger that
had no name. Desire. Strength. Thirst. Brotalvis drank deep.

It was then Brotalvis realized his place in this world. And the
shadows concurred. Sitting at his desk, he felt the first pinpricks
of discomfort from his spell. Oh how the old seer had bled! He
simply would not give this spell over easily. Claiming that shadow
would blot out the sun and all, it took Brotalvis long hours of
torture to finally get the incantations and spiral circles of
protection correct. And now, he would see if he lived or died.

Mage. Why have you summoned my essence?

I see, so you hunger for power. But will you survive?

What do I care of trivial mortal matters, weak fool! I am darkness!

So you can offer me something? Very well, I will hold you to
that.

I do have a task for you, mortal, one that you will find agreeable.

Yes, pave the way for my minions. Gather these artifacts, for
they will be instrumental in my designs.

If it pleases you, yes. Do not fail me, mortal. Or the pain
I inflict on you will be legendary.

Chapter 3

And so around the age of fifteen, Brotalvis left the orphanage
to seek his place in the world. Saying one final word to
Jaragh, the only person who had truly been kind to him, Brotalvis
left, walking south on the Merchant's road, ready for whatever fate
had in store for him.

The first couple weeks were a nightmare. Constantly searching
for one who could unlock the secrets of the magic he had seen
was easier said than done. Brotalvis learned at a young age
that some would seek to kill you if they knew you used magic.
Brotalvis was shocked. Did they not see what good magic could
do? At times, he tried to reason with them, but it was no use.
Those days, he was happy if he didn't end up in some gutter
with the Sultan's patrolman shuffling him towards some altar.
Eventually though, Brotalvis found the mentor he searched for.


For three years now, Brotalvis had followed Zeriahal Distanni
in his travels around the realms, slowly learning the intricate
nature of changing one's form. Mostly, he had acted as a walking
library/chest for Zeriahal, holding all the items that his master
had not yet divined the properties of. It was in this time that
shadows first began to talk to Brotalvis. Thinking it another
trick of his masters', Brotalvis at first kept quiet, as the shadows
promised him wealth, power, everything he could ever dream of.
But in the back of his mind, Brotalvis would always be the
abandoned orphan. The shadows promised him his mother and
father's love, but he knew it was a lie. 'Where was my mother
then?' It was all a lie. He knew then, as he watched his master
intently reading a blackened tome, then it would be up to him and
only Brotalvis to make his way in the world. The shadows approved.

Chapter 4

It began as another moment of passion in long line of
moments for Althea L'nothe. The human she had bedded was
one of the many brutes she had seduced in her time among
the courteseans and advisors. Slowly she had manuevered
herself into a position of nobility, gaining land, money, and
the ever-important seat on the city council. Now, with
the Lord's advisor in bed next to her, all of her goals were
about to be realized. There was just one little problem.

Brotalvis was abandoned by his mother at an early age. Given
to the service of Jaragh by some travelers who discovered him,
he spent much of his formative years within the Balator orphanage,
becoming adept at slinking away from the random duergar, giant
and every creature that came there to slay children. In fact,
one of these adventurers drew Brotalvis's eye. As he stood on
a crumbling part of the balcony of the orphange, listening to
a massive battle take place somewhere on the main path of the
village, he noticed a dark-cowled mage. This mage stood alone
amoung the combatants, far away from the Emperor and her
Centurions. It seemed like the shadows themselves writhed
around the mage, protecting him from the unleashed magics in
area. Three slim rods were carried in belt loop on his robes,
but before Brotalvis could look closer, his form rippled and
changed. Brotalvis saw his chance to get out of this orphanage.
He saw his chance to gain power. Now, he just had to live
to realize it.

Chapter 5

You spy a cloaked man leaning casually against some sort
of decorated wall, speaking into the shadows in a low voice.

Ah, yes. Tell your Master I have discovered many artifacts of
of power on this plane. People seem to keep such items around
for their everyday use, as odd as it seems...

No no you fool! I do not keep these items, as per our agreement.
I merely hold on to them for the time being.

A few, but worthy companions are truly hard to come by these
days. I keep getting attacked by foul magic-haters whenever I seek
to accomplish anything. I have found the savages of the Refuge
valuable allies, a pity they war with your Master's chosen.

Them? Our goals our similar, but I have no yet spoke to the
Chancellor about them. Why should I? Perhaps if they need me.

Why then? Because I can twist that need to suit my own demands.
Power lies in the ability to shape men to do what you want. That
That is what your Master understands, and why he chose me
for the task he did.

Tell you? You truly are foolish if you believe me that simple.

Very well. I shall send word to your master when I acheive a small
measure of power within my guild. Soon I will have what he
wants.

Amusing. Yes, I will. Until then.

Chapter 6

The terrified scribe wept as she recalled the events of the
past day, her makeup ruined, her face looking comical in
its' dysfunction. He seemed so nice, at first, she thought.
But that all changed, changed when she cut her finger.
You saw the way his eyes gleamed, she told herself, you
saw the hungry look in his eyes. You saw the way he
led you to the places you didn't want to go.
You saw how his words became sibilant,
until you were in his thrall. And
now, looking at the torn remnants of
your undergarments, will
it ever be
the same?

She was quite tasty, was she not?

Perhaps, but she was so young! Vital! She tasted like the
flowers my mother used to pick. I had not thought I would
think of those days again, but perhaps her innocence brought
back memories of my own.

In time, you can feed. For now, allow me my pleasures.

I do not care for your master's tone. I will go to this...
Academy. If he desires it. But I will not be his slave. We
are partners. He gets the world, I get moments like I just had.
That taste...how it intoxicates me!

I know he is pleased you fool! Do not test my goodwill towards
you, foolish shadow. How easy would it be for me to visit
tortures even your master would pale at.

Yes, why do you think he was interested in me...I have
talents in those sorts of areas...the nature of the beast, so
speak.

Very well. I expect your Master to send word to me shortly
after this...errand. Tell him my patience is limited...
