Chapter 1

Born to a quiet family of gnomes, only relatively recent transplants (but
three generations) to Hillcrest from the violet woodlands; Marastron Talelse
grew as most gnomes do, as a studious and serious child. He was, of course,
given to playtimes as are most childrenrecess was an important part of his
education and must be taken equally as seriously, he felt. Those were merry
years, where he was allowed freedom to pursue whatever of the sciences,
magics, maths and languages that he preferred.

Over time he felt increasingly drawn to raw magics, pulling at what he felt
were the very basic elements of life, combining, shaping, drawing pure
ethereal arts into the world. As his focus grew more dedicated, his time
became increasingly swallowed into the arts, spending less and less time with
friends and classmates and more time pouring over dusty tomes. In many ways,
he was well fitted for the invokers training. As most mages know, the
invokers know well the power of their art, know the raw destructive forces it
can contain. Unlike the dark paladins who delve into arts without true
understanding, simply seeing and stealing ways of force, the invoker
guildmasters all expect true perfection, to know the capacity and capability
of elements, slowly adding layers of complexity only as the initiate of the
art shows true mastery.Only through mastery and the aspects that come with
it can the powers be used properly, wisely.

Marastron always understood this call to mastery, it seemed almost
instinctively. To him it was not a conscious choice, within him he felt
compelled, urged, forced to perfect any spell he took training in. If he
accepted the training in a spell from his guildmaster he must perfect it.
Not spending time focusing on various spells could leave his feeling nervous,
almost afraid. This is not something he truly understands, just a compulsion
that is hidden deep within him.The guildmasters thought him dedicated and
studious, as did his classmates, and himself.

These elements of his personality most define him, a need for mastery and an
understanding of the powers he studies; a sense of serious and calm wisdom
tends to permeate him, despite his agealthough he is not young for a

innately brilliant one is.

As Marastron mastered the basic arts, he was told to leave the confines of
Hillcrest, to take residence within another city and begin studying under
other great spellmasters. He came to visit Upper Cragstone, whose people are
not dissimilar from the Gnomes, wise folk who have survived. He spent time
in Galadon, Hamsah Mutazz, Arkham and cities in between. He has seen
violence in his youth, heard shouts of battle and watched blow floweven
violence in his youth, heard shouts of battle and watched blood flow, flow even
from his own face. He has seen haughty snobbery from elves and dark deeds
from giants of flame, good and bad, lawful and chaotic all act rashly and
poorly.These actions have convinced him that greater wisdom and temperance
is needed by all; not merely those who practice the high arts of invocation.
