Chapter 1

My grandmother, having raised me since the edge of my memories, was my only
direct family that I knew about. She told me while I was still quite young
that my parents had both passed away in an unfortunate accident (though I
never was told nor asked anymore details). It seemed natural to me never
having a father or mother (though I often would think of grandmother as
My grandmother taught me many things, and while she ran a small clinic she
allowed me to help her and learn from her. As we lived in a small village
most of the people she helped were all local villagers, and for most of my
upbringing it was a peaceful village. After I was old enough to live on my
own grandmother told me I should go on a journey to learn and see the outside
world.
Therefore I left my little village with what supplies I could carry to wander
for a while. During these wanderings I saw many things, with both despair
and hope. Everywhere I went I saw conflicts of varying types such as verbal,
physical and mental. Though even with all of the conflicts there was still
hope, as I also saw acts of generosity and forgiveness.Often though I was
worried that the later was missing far too often.
One event that was most memorable from my wanderings was when I found a small
village that had recently been raided by forces unknown to me, who had left
it in near ruins. While I was providing what little aid I could (being just
nearly a child still as we elves consider ourselves) I found a mother whom
was on the brink of death. She had placed herself in grave danger in order
to protect the lives of her two babies, even taking a deep sword wound.
Fortunately her life was spared by the aid of a local healer, though some
scars would stay with her forever. However, her babies were spared the fate
of death by her blood and fierce determination to protect them.
When I recall this event somehow it brings back a deep feeling of loss, with
which sometimes comes tears. I then often rethink about how my parents were
laid to rest.
Now my wanderings had come to an end when I got a message from some of the
villagers alerting me to return home and that my grandmother had been gravely
wounded, though the message did not say how. I quickly made my way back to
the village, with instead of fear a feeling of urgency. When I arrived at
the village there were few villagers visible, and I went straight to my home
rather than stop to ask questions. I found my grandmother lying in bed
covered with blankets. Her face was very pale I could tell immediately that
she was surely on her deathbed. I sat down next to her to gently clasp her
hand, and as soon as I touched it she slowly turned her head towards me.
Without opening her eyes, she merely smiled with what little strength she had
left and gently squeezed my hand. After what seems like hours, though it was
likely only a few moments, what little energy she had left departed, with a
small smile still on her face.
That smile, I will always keep that smile in my memories. While I was in
great pain from her loss, that smile told me that I should keep moving on, to
find a future and to protect that future, as I know she had done (and I often
wonder if my parents had succeeded at that also). The villagers put her to
rest, as is custom in a small
