Just hitting return wouldn't give you a "Huh?". You had to have had some text there.

I think he's saying he actually typed "ret" and that took him out. I use this as a feature when I want to vis myself, but not lose sneak. I just type "v" and I step out of the shadows, because it's a non-command.

I believe it is when he typed ret that did it, since that is short for the retreat skill, and it will draw him out of the shadows even if he doesn't know that skill.
