If I cast this spell, then go to sleep with or without any or all earth shieldings it does not wake me up. Also the echos are rather awkward, just being the same as if I was awake for the line that damage would be on, or if I dodged them (dodging boulders while asleep, nice didn't realize I tossed and turned so much.) Wonder what would happen if someone slept me with rain there...

If you're not awake, it's now the same as if you're not present to control the spell-- the spell fades.
