It was shifting, and if the impale affect is no longer present, shouldn't I be able to shift without taking damage?

It was the shifting WHILE bleeding that killed you. Bleeding affects are not shown. Just because the affects of the impale are no longer seen doesn't mean you have stopped bleeding.
Shifting while bleeding will cause you to take damage, just like shifting while boneshattered, or shifting while impaled. You just can't see the bleeding affect.
