From my experience the last 100 hours I would say that crashing doesn't seem to kick in if your using hand to hand.
Oversight or by design?

From Dio's. Log is Dasaid v Ajeagre
wilderness <559hp 584m 765mv 18624tnl (3.25%)> flur
You parry Ajeagre's punch. As you parry Ajeagre's attack, he strikes at your weapon! Ajeagre tries to disarm you, but "Taisangu" the blade of a master assassin won't budge! Ajeagre's crashing stroke DISMEMBERS you! You dodge Ajeagre's punch. You dodge Ajeagre's punch. You dodge Ajeagre's punch. You dodge Ajeagre's punch. You can't get your weapons up in time to swing. Ajeagre parries your slice. Ajeagre parries your slice. Ajeagre dodges your chaotic blast. Ajeagre is convulsing on the ground.
What's really interesting is that crashing didn't fire in the ten or so rounds that Ajeagre was wielding two swords.

I'm sure that the main function that is used for crashing has a check at the very top to make sure you have weapons, yes. So long, and thanks for all the fish!
