seems after having a shield broken if he tried again immediately i would 'evade' even though I had no shield. Not sure if the evade check comes before check if I have a shield or if it has to do with the shield recently being broken.
It is an artifact of the code, that the evade check comes before the skill checks. This is true for many different things (like evading a disarm attack even though you aren't wielding a weapon).
