#6900, "RE: Abbreviation for items"

The abbreviation for players occasionally hiccups some confusion as it is. I'd hate to see heaps of item abbreviations added to the mix, especially since many socials and commands can target both items and creatures/players.

Not to mention, unlike characters, items often have multiple keywords. That 'elemental blade' you have may have the keywords 'elemental', 'blade' and 'sword' for example - while meanwhile you may also have a 'swirling black elixir' in your inventory. 'sw', 'bl' and 'el' would end up referring to either of these items.

Many items can have half a dozen keywords, multiply that by piles of items that accumulate in inventories or on the ground or in containers, and I think you'd have a recipe for so much frusteration, it would rapidly become a 'feature' that no one bothered using. Why code a feature most people would find frusterating and not use?

Most items, after all, have a simple name available anyways (unlike a character, who might have a name like "Andrielaudriella", so thus it becomes worthwhile to have abbreviations available when you are repeatedly casting spells on or sending tells to that person.
Item names are unlikely to be imputted so repeatedly, and even when they are, there is usually a simple keyword available for use.

If you find an item that only has a long and unwieldy keyword without a short, obvious option. (Example, if you had a 'short called "Paraelementalbane" and "Paraelementalbane" is a keyword but "sword" is not), feel free to use the typo command to suggest a simple keyword be added to the item.
