I gave up on my first character because I could barely keep myself in food, let alone recall potions. Here's some tips for getting money:

Kill a PC and take their money (if they have any).

Kill a PC and sell their stuff.

Kill NPCs who ought to have decent cash.

Explore unpopular areas, and kill NPCs there.

Play a thief and steal stuff

If you want to get rich, quick, play an evil thief.

If you're playing a good character, you're going to be stuck having more friends and less money -- but killing an evil thief might help make up for that.
