RNG, random number generator, can account for a large portion of perma-lag situations. Second is, mage fights don't last long if the enemy has the opening attack, typically. Bash lag is very variable, and success dependent on many factors. Just remember that as many of these fights you see going this way, there are equally as many where they fail.
