Chapter 2

Things became tense at the lumberyard after his sons first birthday. Thera was
an ever changing battlefield, and the battlefield had started to spill into
the Lumberyard. One day, the Imperial army and the Maran of the Fortress were
locked in battle near Galadon, and a powerful necromancer of the black sect
had retreated to the lumberyard wounded and looking to invigorate himself. The
necromancer began a terrible slaughter of the cloud giants there, his negative
unholy magics twisting the flesh of his people harshly from the violet curse
that had long plagued his people. Deathly touch by deathly touch, Gazu's kin
began to fall. As the necromancer made his way through the lumberyard towards
Gazru's family, Gazru threw himself in front of his wife and child in an
attempt to stop the black mage. Gazru was hit by deathly magic, and wounded
gravely a touch away from death. The last thing he saw before he passed out
was the life being sucked out of his wife and child, watching the life wither
from his wifes eyes.

When Gazru woke, the lumberyard was in ruins. His father, mother, wife and son
all lay dead around him, their bodies twisted and withered away by necromantic
magics. Everyone he grew up with and knew was dead. He was wounded deeply,
barely having enough strength to build a pyre and burn his family in an
honorable burial. He then limped himself to Galadon and collapsed at the
temple. He awoke to a man tending to his wounds. Not a priest, but a defender
of the village of Battleragers. He had heard about the battle there and saw
Gazru near death at the temple, and had used poultices and field dressings to
keep him alive. Gazru thanked the man, and swore from that day that he would
use his hammer to crush wielders of magic, every last one of them until the
day that the power of the gods was in the hands of mortals no more. Only then
would he retire, and return to working an anvil and forge in peace. He would
avenge his family and son one mage at a time.
