Chapter 2

Dupayne Boed'ar was born of noble parents in the Temple of Loch
Grymnear, far away from Galadon in the northern-eastern corner of
Thera. Loch Grymnear, like all cities, is inhabited by both the good
and the bad, the Orderly and the less so. To the young Dupayne,
the darker side of existence always held the most attraction. He
was fascinated by the bizarrely clad worshippers of strange deities
such as Iukuru, the forgotten God, whose devotees always went
about completely swathed in thick black robes. When he reached
the age of sixteen, he sneaked into Iukuru's shrine during a mass,
and learnt why his worshippers were always dressed so as part of
ther initiation, burning brands were applied to their faces and
bodies, causing great weals and scars. If the scars formed
themselves into Iukuru's runes, the acolyte was accepted; if not,
he was taken from the temple and disposed of. Dupayne was
caught that night, lurking in the shadows at the rear of the temple,
after accidentally kicking over a large brass candle-stand. He was
given a simple choice-either to take the test of the flame, or to die
there and then.

The burns were made, and they formed themselves into Iukuru's
runes before the disappointed eyes of the high priest. Dupayne was
suddenly an initiate of Iukuru, the forgotten God! Fearing what his
parents would say when they saw his face, Dupayne fled Loch
Grymnear on board a merchant's ship bound for the Ruined City and
then a caravan to Galadon.
