Chapter 11

"The Chancellor needs me for something, a unique piece of a 'puzzle' he
mentioned, and nobody else" Iussuni originally thought, at the beckoning of
Narissorin. This was going to be something unique, especially since it was
meant only for her, and not even another soul within the circle of the Scion
was supposed to hear about it. At first it sounded delightful - a secret
between the Chancellor and herself, some sort of request that makes him even
more dependent on her.
Then the explanation came, and Iussuni was anything but pleased.
"My research?" she thought, "He's using MY research!". This wasn't spoken in
adoration, praise, or even wonder - but pure and vicious anger. Narissorin's
idea, as he explained to her, was to come as close to absolute death as
possible to attempt to gain something out of the 'brink' (as he described
it). "He thinks he can call MY void a 'brink' or a 'precipice' and pretend it
is meant for his exploration? Hardly". Iussuni was filled with a mixture of
disgust and anger, with numerous vengeful thoughts flashing through her mind.


"I'm to pull him back from it so he doesn't die, am I? Perhaps it is better
to let it take him and devour him whole. He isn't meant for it anyway. A
mage, he may be, but this requires someone with the ability to channel the
dark energies that it possesses, to become a conduit for it rather than a
master of it. Perhaps it is better to let him die, feign that I will assist
him, and instead push him over the ledge into the darkness. If he wants what
is mine so badly, let him become part of it - so later I can feast upon his
power as well".

But for the time being, she did as she had to, she agreed to his request. A
"No" could banish her from where her research flourishes most, within the
Chasm of the Scion, but a "Yes" at least provides opportunity: to assist or
deceive. But what to do, she wondered, and had not reached a decision yet.
This was something she greatly wished to inquire about with her lord, Reksah,
since no doubt he could forge more amusing ideas than Iussuni ever could.

Still, what of the benefits? Perhaps, given that Narissorin does not have
enough power to control the potential energies within, the journey and
experiment would do nothing but benefit Iussuni. It could be for the better,
then, since perhaps his brief glimpse into the unknown would be nothing in
comparison to what she could reach later. So much to ponder, so little time.
