Chapter 1

Makiki grew up amoung a peaceful group of desert nomads in the Nonviel.
She had a safe, happy life, surrounded by family and friends. It was cozy
and warm, but maybe just a little boring. She was restless even from a
young age, always flying off on her own to chase some storm across the
desert, or explore an interesting little cave the group stumbled across.
Her parents agreed to let her learn to hunt and fight, even if it wasn't
what they would have preferred, just because they could see she was going
to be getting into trouble no matter what.

She got into trouble right away, of course. Chasing around a giant
scorpion that was, like, three times her size, or skirmishing with bandits
that were trying to cause trouble for trade caravans. She took to the hunt
as eagerly as she had taken to the sky when she first learned to fly. But
it wasn't only fighting. She learned to take care of herself. To find food
and water even out in the bleakest seeming parts of the desert and to
patch up wounds. She slept out under the stars every night, always
somewhere new. She sort of fell in love with the world itself. Roaming all
over, seeing new sights, getting into danger and getting through it.

So she became a Squire for two reasons. For her family and friends and all
the nice people she met, and all the ones she hasn't met yet too. To keep
them safe and free. And for the world too. That it can stay beautiful and
wild. She'll do her best to fight for them both, and to stay cheerful and
friendly while she does it.
