As different as Dolce is from most others he encounters, being both dim
witted and distrusting, it is near impossible for him to make friends, even
with those he sees frequently. However, he is used to being alone, has
learned to embrace his solitude, and sees it as a way to challenge himself.
A way to learn without always being "taught", which is especially important
since he has trouble comprehending even the most simple directions.

What he does learn on his own, however, he keeps closely guarded. It is
"his" accomplishment, "his" triumph and he believes that if relinquishes
his knowledge he will be weakening not just himself, but the recipient

Also, he believes that by allowing others to see him as stupider than he
really is, he gains an advantage over them. He gains no satisfaction
from others acknowledging his accomplishments and achievements, as he
believes that the impact of his actions are enough.
