Chapter 3

She hated him.

That ugly little gnome her father had purchased to educate her never tired of
hearing himself speak. Even when he knew that it was something his pupil was
already aware of, he would blather on and on. Even worse, Jayundar muttered
quietly to her self, was when she understood something but couldn't explain
why or how. She just -knew- it, but this arrogant little midget would not
accept that answer.

Her father was really the one to blame.While her brother got to spar all
day with muscled and handsome Mehmet, she had to study magic instead of
working on her mosaics and poetry. But still, even if her father was to
blame it was that ugly little gnome that really made her angry.

How many times would he hold a piece of stone before her and force her to
concentrate on its elemental properties? And how could she possibly
concentrate with his incessant banter? Well, luckily she had begun tuning
him out very effectively. Usually it was just as if she couldn't hear him,
but sometimes the sound of his voice would actually seem to morph into the
crackling of flames or the chirping of crickets.

Today was even worse--she wanted to be out in her garden but this little
bastard had her in the study yet again.And he smelled terrible
today--almost like pure sulfur.Well, Jayundar had had enough of this and
was going to play a little trick on him. She gathered her concentration on
set to line the stone with fire instead of earth magic...

WHOOOSH! The entire lab exploded in flames and her tutor, Fildalalsh, was
knocked into a display of elemental ooze, his clothing and very flesh on
fire. The flames called to her even as they burned, beckoned her out into
the hot desert sands. In her fear and surprise, it seemed only natural that
fire could speak...
