It's semi-moot because my opening attack was evaded and I didn't really want to break combat and risk being strangled if I could avoid it (although really letting that happen might not have been a bad way to buy some time where I wasn't taking much damage), but you're right in that backstab or maybe blackjack would have been a smarter opener in this case than trip.
