Chapter 6

"He was sick, Jumbel" whispered Koellang. He had heard the commotion and raced
over to the Rift, but he was too late. "The magic here consumed your father" he
muttered. He placed a hand on my shoulder and uttered: "As for
your mother, she often came here in search for a divine answer to your father's
corrupted mind". I glanced up at him and replied "she was naive for turning
to the very same magic that corrupted him." I stared with rage at the rift.
"Neither its pure nor wicked form should exist, it must be destroyed!"
I cried out as I swung my axes towards the bloody altar and pious statue.
"This chaotic magic must be obliterated, in all of its forms!" I proclaimed.
Koellang frowned as he walked away from me.

I moved away from the Rift, leaving my parents behind. Blood dripped from
my axes onto the rocky stone floor as I circled the great stone. Its crystal
veins pulsated thirteen times and then went unusually dark. I thought to myself:
"What in the stones is this?" A soft whisper echoed throughout the area, inaudible
at first. I honed in and heard: "thirteen stones, thirteen roses, thirteen lashes,
thirteen steps." Over and over again, the same whisper. Puzzled, I pondered the
concept.

Staring down, I nervously adjusted the thirteen roses secured to my belt.
Upon adjusting the thirteenth rose, I smirked. I ran my finger across my
trapezius, taking note of thirteen scars. Looking down at my rucksack, I took
note of thirteen gems. I snickered to myself and took thirteen small steps.

The voice of a man drifted in from below. "Quite the lucky mess you are, Jumbel" he
snickered. "Let me introduce myself, I am Ackohin, the Priest of the Golden Wit".

Chapter 5

*A continuation*

As I advanced a little closer, the cloaked figure shifted slightly in my
direction. The Rift's light betrayed his cloaked face, revealing his
svirf features. "Your passion for mischief has gone too far this time Jumbel!"
exclaimed my father. "You should not be here!" he yelled. His eyes
glowed with magic as he casted a spell on his vile whip. A burst of
energy expelled across the chamber as his fiery whip clashed with my
trapezius. My mother's cry echoed from a distance as I saw her sprinting
towards us.

"You will be a Furystone no more" he proclaimed. He uttered another
incantation as light poured through his whip. He raised his wielding
hand preparing for his final blow. As the whip advanced towards my
face I shielded my eyes. I heard my mother's scream and the booming sound
of magic.

I opened my eyes and was overwhelmed in sorrow as I realized my
mother had stepped in front of the lashing. She laid lifeless on the ground
with a stone rose resting in her closed fist. My father rushed to her
body, devastated by his actions. Filled with rage, I grabbed
his whip with my left hand and my axe with my right. I entwined his torso
and brought my axe violently down upon his head. Blood spilled across the chamber
as I stared down at them both. I removed the stone rose from my mother's
clenched fist and secured it to my belt. As I glanced nervously at the
magical rift, I adjusted each of the thirteen stone roses secured to my belt.

Chapter 4

"You must be faster Jumbel" exclaimed Tiltaan. He swung his learning stick
at my face as I attempted to parry with a pair of axes. "Trap your
opponent with the edges!" he insisted. "That's it, now bring it down
over my head!" he yelled. With a scream of rage, I used all my strength
an executed an overhead attack. "Good, good!" he applauded. Tiltaan had
always encouraged the use of axes. He was convinced that my overly large
svirfneblin stature qualified me as the greatest axe wielder of our race.
Truth be told, I was fascinated by their shape. As we ended our daily lesson,
I sipped on my canteen and gave him a sharp salute.

It was an ordinary day, perfect for my daily walk down the Holy Cavern. I
secured my axes to my back, and walked quietly down the cavern row. I smiled
as I placed my hand on a bear claw chiseled into the damp cavern wall. It was
reminiscent of my more youthful days. As I walked further down the cavern,
I heard a barely audible chant drifting from that old Rift Chamber.
Walking somewhat stealthily I approached the chamber with caution.

"Tgeven'ah reegard ut'mun everscen" whispered the cloaked figure. The
incantation was whispered repeatedly and methodically as he sliced the neck
of a wild turkey over the Rift's bloody altar. A demonic gurgling sound
echoed throughout the chamber. Nervously eavesdropping, I adjusted each of
the twelve stone roses secured to my belt.

Chapter 3

Cries superimposed over gurgling echoed throughout the darkness. Koellang's eyes
glowed fiery red as he guided us further into the abyss. As I stared downward,
a soft glow of light became increasingly visible. The clash of weapons and the shout
or militia intensified as we approached the lowest level of Cragstone. With a sharp
jerk and loud rumble, we arrived at our destination. Koellang gave me a wink and
advised: "Be careful down here Jumbel, and may the Golden Wit guide you."
"Golden Wit?" I thought to myself, what a strange thing to say. I stepped down off
the lift and began to carefully sneak through this subterranean cavern.

The area was darker than I'd imagined - likely a result of the barely
illuminated crystal veins. Keeping my head down, and in an effort to avoid
the militia's attention, I walked quickly through the cave - searching for the
great stone's energy source. Unfamiliar with the area, I followed the sound
of dripping water and arrived at a rich mineral cache. Emeralds, rubies and
sapphires, the likes of which I'd never seen, exuded brilliance. I studied
them carefully, looking for one to pry from the cold and damp cave wall. One
emerald, exceptionally large in size, hummed softly. It was the thirteenth gem
from the top and was barely fastened to the wall. With a skillful pull, I
yanked the gem loose, and tossed it into my gem-encrusted rucksack.

As I turned from the cache, giddy with glee, my face was met by the swift blow of a
mace. The blow shattered the bridge of my nose causing my eyes to welt up and blood
to pour into my mouth. I fell to the floor in agonizing pain - passing out.

"I hope your silly little trinket was worth it Jumbel!" My father cracked his whip
searing his twelfth lashing into my trapezius. As the blood poured down my back,
my mother handed me another stone rose, promising me the cruelty would come to an
end. She whispered: "You're lucky the guards got to you in time, the vile elves
nearly ended you my son". I looked up at her and replied: "Do you think the lady
svirfs will love my shattered nose?". She snickered and said: "Do you ever take
anything seriously?". Truth is, I didn't...

Chapter 2

*Several Years Later*

"What will it be today, Jumbel?" uttered Sernat. A burst of flames bellowed
from his oven has he swung a grotesque cave rat in my direction. I gagged,
and replied: "How about some of that delicious mushroom pie?". With a
fat smile on his face, he declared: "One exquisite mushroom pie for Jumbel!".
He handed me the warm pie and winked as he whispered: "That'll be thirteen
copper coin eh?". I glanced over at his price list, noting its price
of twenty five copper. Boggled by the concept, I dug down into my
coin purse and handed him thirteen copper coins. "Want some of this squid to go?"
he chuckled. I shivered at the thought, gave him a hearty smile, and walked
out of his cook house towards the Great Stone.

As I walked passed the great life rock, I marveled at its stunning size. I ran
my hand across its surface, connecting with its life force. Beautiful crystal
veins pulsated with a soft glow - breathing vitality into our community. As I
studied the stone I could not help but wonder what lied beneath it. I whispered
to myself: "Perhaps some mischief today eh?". At that very moment, precisely
thirteen crystal veins illuminated with a vigor I'd never seen before. Intrigued,
I began a long walk towards the great lift.

On route, I paused near the Holy Cavern to admire the great lion statuette. Its
intricate detail gave it a life-like presence - as if it could pounce at any
moment. Feeling courageous, I raced over to Koellang and with shortness of breath
shouted: "Greetings my good friend!" With a curious smile he replied: "I know that
look and it's nothing good!" I fumbled through my possessions and whipped out a
precious uncut diamond. Koellang's eyes lit up, and he asked: "A fine gem - where
did you find it?". With a grin, I replied: "A keen eye and a bit of luck, Koellang".
He smirked and whispered: "What do you want for it?". I whispered in
reply: "Safe passage downward eh?". His face grew stern and he took a moment to
ponder the notion. He nodded and whispered: "Not a word of this Jumbel, I will deny
I ever allowed it". I nervously adjusted each of the eleven stone roses secured
to my belt as he lowered us into the darkness.

Chapter 1

A cold chill runs down my spine as my hands gently make contact with the
dark and damp cellar wall. My naked body trembles as beads of sweat run
furiously down my youthful face. To help with the pain, my father
offers two tiny bits of sulfuric rock to bite down on. Perhaps the rocks
offered some stress release but its greater benefit was the distraction
of its awful taste.

In the background, my mother's whimpering rings against
the walls of this hollow cave. The scraping sound of my father's whip
being dragged across the cold rock floor sends my body into a neurotic
state. With my bare back faced to him, he exclaims: "You are a Furystone,
son, your mischief and humor have no place in this family".

With a snap of his wrist the wicked tail of his whip pierces through my trapezius,
exposing bone in the process. I dropped to the floor in excruciating pain
as I attempted to hold back the tears. I looked up at my father, spit out
the sulfuric rock, gave him a sly smile and replied: "Would you like these
foul rocks as a memento?" Unamused, he muttered under his breath and walked
away as my mother rushed over to me.

"It will be okay" she whispered. My mother handed me a intricately crafted
stone rose. "Here, keep this by your side and let it remind you of beauty
in the most vile of times". She was always the compassionate and loving
parent yet it never stopped my father from his cruel punishments.

I looked up towards my mother's watery eyes, smiled at her, and whispered
"Perhaps next time I can parry his whip with this exquisite tiny rose".
We both laughed as she began lulling me into a deep sleep.
