Chapter 9

High amidst the gleaming spire tower, the light bathes the room in it's
light as it pours down from the huge stained glass window at the top. So
high above Galadon, the light reflects brilliantly off the northern altar and
continues to splash across walls lined with silver and gold. It seems so
very fitting for an organization built through revelation, bringing to light
the deeds of criminals and leaving them exposed from hiding to face justice.

Yet one window, somehow, perhaps by a trick of angles or the way the sun
rises, seems unable to be reached by light in the shaded dark alcove on the
southeast corner.

It is to this window I find myself consistently drawn...

How fitting as well to peer thru the window is to gaze upon the docks and
the shadier areas of Galadon. These are the places where unlawful activity
is not so easily revealed by light alone. No, to truly understand the
workings and illicit activity, one must step in among it, breath it, live it.
Reside in the shadow and the dark characters will show themselves.

I know this window will be a place I return to again and again. I must.
For the paladins, for those like my dearest friend and now deceased Einrai.
They could not dwell in such places, they dare not dwell in such places.
It is for them I must do this, so that they can keep their hands clean and
free from the deeds that would break their codes and very souls.

We need our paladins. Yet with the spire outnumbered three to one, we
must make sacrifices. I will bear this burden, this I tell myself.

What scares me the most...is the satisfaction I feel in accepting it.

Chapter 8

It was ambitious, but soon word began to spread like outlander fire. The
prices couldnt be beat and so much food began to send smells wafting
across all of Galadon. Was that one of the guards from the graveyard
sitting down? And look, the Mayor himself was at a table eating with the
Enforcer, the latter of which now tearing into a braised lamb shank!
Even the shapeshifter and transmuter guildmasters, who the whole town
knew NEVER got out, had shown up and were discussing biomancy over a
fillet of silverpike!

Vree grinned. Maybe she'd build an even bigger mansion than the one off
park road. No wait, maybe she would build her own private spire, made of
wood from the Refuge!

The menu and courses were perfect, the profit margins unbeatable, and the
speed of service brought unlimited scalability. She grinned. She would
be so rich even Corlx would be begging her for loans. Nothing could go
wrong. Which was good, since the whole population of Galadon was now
eating at her food stand!

Suddenly, a gnome let out an exclamation of terror. The pouches stopped
operating, and the gnomes threw up their arms in panic as the food
preparation came to a grinding halt while hundreds still waited in line!
Her only clue was one of the guildmaster patrons muttering something
about multiple veil shifts. And she hadnt even collected the money!

"Did I smell silverpike?" asked a soft felar voice.

She slowly turned around in the direction of the Copeham Inn to see three
Battleragers...Hexugar, Crraya, and Serra...stretch sleepily from a night
of too much drinking as they walked towards her.

She sighed. The idea had been perfect. Almost.

Chapter 7

It was perfect: A business idea like no other. The Galadon marketplace
stood no chance. The baker and butcher wouldnt know what hit them.

It was rare Vree had a moment to part from the time needed to administer
the laws, but this venture would be worth it. Shiny, efficient, and more
valuable than a golden goose stood Vrees new magical food stand.

The gnomish workers were set to serve, awaiting Vree's signal as she
stood looking at her watch. They would start at the break of dawn and
crush the competition.

The time had come, she barked an order, and they began to operate shelf
upon shelf of pouches lined in a row. There must have been fifty
pouches, acquired with time and effort that would now pay dividends. The
little gnomes ran up and down the line, opening and shutting the pouches
quickly. Another gnome sorted, while still more gnomes began to serve
the tables that had been spread out to cover the market square.

The pre fixe menu was perfect: Warm chunks of bread, followed by a large
clay bowl filled with hot beef stew, then an appetizer of taglo jerky
skewers. Next one could choose their main course from the three options
of fillet of silverpike, braised lamb shank, or even almost-farm-to-table
chicken. Then came the warm, and if she could say so herself,
scrumptious pastries. And then not to be outdone, who didnt want to go
home with an iced werewolf cookie?

Okay sure, there was SOME waste, as evident by the extra 162 large clay
bowls of hot beef stew and that gnome over there buried in that pile of
werewolf cookies. But what did that matter when the prices were cheap
(free) and there was always the paladin soup kitchen?

Chapter 6

Any good general can divulge not only the perfect tactical plan, but take
into considerations the unexpected, the risks, the unforeseen possibilities.

I am no general, but a master of politics, negotiation, and the occasional
capture perhaps. Yet similar lessons must be learned, similar yet to be
discovered events considered. Three things occupy my mind, some more
pressing, but all equally dangerous.

The first and deepest concern, perhaps because things go well in enlisting
the help of imperials, are those who will not reciprocate or think themselves
above even the spire. Fortune, or perhaps my negotiation skills have been with
me so far, that is until I met the Shadowlord Niji. It seems he is so blinded
in his singleminded focus, that his passion outshines even the Emperor in his
belief that "It is the oath or nothing". In this is a great risk, for
if such led the Empire, the risks to even the spires and cities could be
great. But does it outrisk the rise of chaos? At this time I do not think
it does, but it bears watching.

The second concern is the sun branch of the tree. How easy it is speak of
warning in regards to the reavers. How easy is it speak in mistrust of
the harbingers and their shifting and often violet motives. Yet in the
masked "goodness" of the sun branch is an allure, a trap, that could bring
down order while cloaking its smells in roses and its taste in honey.

Third and lastly are several of the newest recruits. We've recently, a
necromancer aside, gave the badge to several who possess desire to patrol,
but lack the tools to be effective. I met a water shifter, who knows no
other animals. When asked to assist in the scales return, he informed me
he has no animals for such things. When asked if he could fumble or faerie
fire, he stated he would not risk death. When asked if he could patrol
the Open Sea and intercept an outlander who came to defend, he ignored me
and said he would only patrol Galadon at this time. And he is just one
of three I am concerned about. We need strong weapons to enforce the spires
justice. Lack heart and we are the like a sharp ceramic dagger that cracks
under pressure, but without the tools to enforce, we are a knife that
can not cut.

Chapter 5

They moved with their heads down, chained from ankle to ankle ahead of the supply
carts full of merchant goods from around the world. The caravan line was vast, stretching
over the hill and as far as the eyes could see. One cart carried spices from Hamsah,
another cart cuendillar from Seantryn, and still another troll-hide from the Wastes of
Nonveil.

To the untrained and unknowing eye, the path of the caravan carts seemed disastrous,
heading straight into the Sands of Sorrow. But there in her dream, Vree saw a much
older version of herself, not only lathered in riches from around the world, but wearing
a powerful insignia of the spire...and not concerned...but smiling as the caravan vanished
into the eastern side of the Sands of Sorrow only to appear via ancient paths on the far
west side!

At her side, stood a member of the council and the imperial scribe himself as the latter
took notes in his ledgers and charts, sharing Vree's smile and the Empire's rise to
power. The Empire was nearly the strongest the world had ever seen and with that, the
most chaotic elements of the world hid beneath their rocks. Those that were not chained
like those before them now. The councilor saw something halt, barked an order, and a whip
cracked into the ankle-chained criminals whose eyes rarely left the ground. A wood-elf
ranger with no fire in his eyes, a priestess who no longer touched her shattered
medallion of Lyristeon, and a fire giant warrior who seemed to hunch away from the sky above.

Criminals whose punishment had been served, these useless souls, had been deemed incorrigible,
once the terrors of the cities...repeat criminals deemed "Enemy of the Cities". The
changes she had helped push thru the Spire, had fairly scooped up such useless individuals
into the law's far reach and now order finally benefited as it should. The spire was
no longer just reactionary...but had entered an age of something more, something greater.

A Golden Age had begun, an Age of Order.

Chapter 4

Majestic towers, formidable walls, the scents and smells of market...

These are all things we think of when we think of the greatest of Thera's
majestic cities. Yet it is the cobblestone that interests me most.

How curious, each stone. So small and yet a part of something so much greater.
And like the great road it forms, we each play our part: The magistrate's patrol,
the Justiciar's investigation, the Vindicators unyielding apprehending, and the
Provost the final piece that holds the rank and branches together. Yet not a one,
even the Provost, could exist without the others.

Where would the Vindicator be without the criminals marked for capture? What disarray
would the spire lay in, without the Justiciar to make sense of the final word of law?
How could the Provost, at her pinnacle, possible ever patrol all the cities without
the magistrates, no matter how thankless the job, taking their simple watch across
the continents in their steadfast vigilance?

No, each stone plays a part, and together we form a majestic thoroughfare on which
the world can march toward an ordered life of prosperous civilization. Alone, set
apart, we are but a single stone.

Chapter 3

Searing pain rackeded her body and she recoiled against a spiraling ramp of thorns
that seemed too green,too vibrant. She would have fallen to the ground if not for
the strange magic that suddenly held her rigid.

The one they called Yegrut had came out of nowhere as she rested, waiting for the
return of her magistrate warrior companion in their continued assault against the
inner tree. His assault was relentless and left no time for action as her body
failed to respond to her most basic commands and instincts.

Suddenly she was falling forward, and in horror, could not even reach out her hands
to break the fall as she landed with a sickening thud on a spiral ramp that seemed so
hard and cold. How odd... to feel pain and be unable to even recoil from it. One
arm was grotesquely twisted underneath her while her eyes were left staring straight
ahead into the tree of ages itself.

The one thing not rigid was the blood that spilled from her body as she was left
and forced to stare straight ahead unmoving across the pool and the strange wild-elf
woman who chanted her mantras. Oddly, unattended and in a pool of the strangest
ooze and substance she had ever seen was an array of weapons and armor in various
states of repair.

Yegrut uttered an incantation wretching her organs and with it bringing the final
bit of darkness to this encounter, but not before the light of an idea flittered
across her mind. A silver lining of profit for her and the spire, whether or not
the outlanders would play a willing part.

Chapter 2

Vree sat on the balcony in the dry air of her Hamsah home. Seagulls
from the nearby Open Sea circled overhead on a wind that also seemed
to carry with it the unmistakable scent of salt water.

She opened the first merchant report and couldn't help but smile. It
seemed the price of a few specific spices were raising due to politics
in Seantryn. Well, she didn't have anything to do with the politics,
but it wasn't coincidence thanks to some early informants, she had a
surplus of said specific spices in a warehouse at the docks. It seemed
with prices at their highest, it was time to release her surplus and
reap the profits.

She moved onto the second report. It seemed a certain famed shrimping
vessel was suddenly having issues with pirates outside of Arkham. Oddly,
the pirates had never attacked, but they sailed so close that the captain
no longer risked venturing there and was forced to offload huge volumes
of shrimp at the Hamsah Seaport for a huge loss. Alright, this one maybe
was her fault and she couldn't help but let out a small laugh of victory.
Never mind that said "pirates" wouldn't harm a fly and she just happened
to have taken ownership in the majority of seafood buyers at the Seaport...

Vree opened the last report, her smile halting as a sickening feeling
wrenched her stomach. A few thugs, thugs she employed, had went much too far.
They were suppose to only be harassing the outlying townships, forcing them
closer to the city and the trade and commerce it provided, but no...

...It had all went wrong, much too far, and now fires THEY had started raced
towards the city from the north where it could easily burn. She dropped her
face into her hands. There was much she would do, and had done, to turn a
profit, but never this. She would NOT bring harm to the city itself and she
would NOT play a part in the cause of this disaster. Quickly she gathered
herself, taking from a secret hiding place a gold purse that would be large
enough to buy all the water invokers she would need and determined to set
things right.

Chapter 1

Vree began her life in Galadon, her father the long serving and quite
successful Galadon trainer at the time. However, when guildmasters
throughout the land begin offering training, his business quickly
went south until he was overcome with debts. He took his life,
leaving Vree and her mother to fend for themselves.

After only one year on the streets of Galadon, enough was enough.
Her mother stepped up, jumping into a world of spice trading from
out of nothing. What started with a few goods, quickly afforded
them hull spaces on ships, and eventually even their own charters.

This worldly life would bring Vree to ports far and exotic and
quickly bring her an adept skillset in commerce, trade, and culture.
Perhaps an ideal life for mother and daughter, reaching even into
Vree's life as a young woman, it would eventually end when growing
so strong in power, and perhaps a little restless, the Outlanders
turned their eyes from a weakened Empire to begin burning the
gold hoarding shipping of the eastern Aryth, bringing with it the
downfall of Vree's mother.

Vree now returns to Galadon, her original birthplace: armed with
gifts of trade and culture, working to strengthen the spire, and
reminded thru her parents of the pitfalls to be had in both
weakness and strength.
