#38, "December 7 - Aggressive vs. Prog mobs"


          

This is another post that CF vets may already know about. Or they maybe didn't know the terms, but figured out the general idea.

Either way, hopefully this will help some folks out there.

There are various ways to create a mob that will attack PCs.

1. "Wimpy Aggro" mobs
A mob that is flagged as "Wimpy Aggro" is the type that often will flee from PCs when below a certain health threshold. They are also the sort that will not strike/track the PC, even if the PC is the one that flees.

Mobs like this will, however, strike the PC if combat stops for some reason (mob or PC flees, stun/choke/blackjack, etc.) and then they are in the same room and the PC goes to sleep.

An example of this kind of mob is the svirfneblin commoners in Lower Cragstone.


2. Aggressive mobs
This is probably the most common mob type that will attack a PC. Mobs of this type must be of a certain level-threshold in comparison to a PC - a level 10 aggro mob will not attack a level 40 PC, for example. They also must be able to SEE the PC. Some mobs are aggro but cannot see invisible (or hidden, or camo, or what have you). Probably most anyone reading this post has run into an aggro mob at some point.

Aggro mobs are interesting in that they can be avoided, sometimes, even if they'd normally be aggro and they can see you. Sometimes you can simply walk past them quickly enough. There are skills that will help you past them such as gentlewalk or duo dimension, also.

Disgusting, rotting zombies in the Mausoleum are an example of this kind of mob.


3. Greet_prog mobs
There are many types of greet_progs. Some are just straight-up greet_prog_murder. These are the ones that strike anyone who walks in and causes the PC attacked to yell. An example of this would be the demon in the middle of the Sands of Sorrow.

Other kinds of greet_progs specialize things. Some greet_progs make the mob attack (or not attack) specific alignments, races, cabals, and so on. Other greet_progs make the mob attack in a certain way (power word kill, assassinate, hold person, and so on).

4. Other progs
Some progs deal with PC's in different ways, not requiring the PC to enter the room. The skeletons on Mount Calandaryl, for instance, have a prog on them that has them act more like "aggro" mobs. I haven't viewed the prog to know for absolute certain, but I'm pretty sure that it also makes the skeletons move toward combat on the Mount.


So, what's the use of this info? Well, there's a couple things that make it very important to know whether something is aggro or if it has a prog.

1. If something is aggro, and tracking someone else, it won't be aggro to you. Something with a greet_prog_murder prog will ALWAYS attack a PC that it would normally attack, regardless of whether it is tracking someone else.

2. Greet_prog_murder mobs are (generally) not also aggro. That means if you are somehow able to get into the room WITHOUT being attacked, you won't be until you leave/re-enter the room it is in. Did you get Power Word Killed by a mob that you were trying to look at for observation experience? Well, that sucks, BUT you can (again, generally!) go back, as a ghost, and sit in the room until you unghost, then look at the mob, and leave, safely.
