Chapter 2

Drow sometimes form raiding parties and head to the surface to slay elves,
one such party found no traces of any surface elves and in order to not anger
their Spider Goddess they preyed upon a caravan of human gypsies whose men
were out hunting. They slaughtered some and raped the rest appeasing the
angered Spider Goddess at least to some degree. By the time the gypsie men
returned, the drow were long gone back into the underdark. Alelas mother was
one of the raped women. She refused to have her son, accused of being an
ill-omen for his half-drow features, destroyed at birth. He grew up in his
young years shunned and disrespected by the rest of the caravan, but his
mother had no where else to go.

Gypsies were flightful beings, prone to enjoy the simple things in life. They
danced and sang quite often, having many dances of fluid and graceful
motions. While Alelas was never able to enjoy such occassions, he did watch
intently as such nimble and deft moves came naturally to him. He secretly
would dance by himself when others could not see. Some dances included the
uses of props, including swords, which were beautiful to behold. Alelas found
those the most fascinating, watching the intricate weaves of the ornamental
blades dance about with the wielder.

After a time the gypsies came upon hard times, finding little hunting or jobs
they could do to feed themselves. Tensions ran high and alchohol was often
imbibed in large quantities. On one evening a man in the caravan got rather
drunk and decided to blame all their problems on the ill-omened child. He
argued and slapped Alelas mother around yelling at her for having kept the
bastard freak. In his fear Alelas picked up a large knife and threatened the
much larger man with it, intending to save his mother. The man in his
drunkeness shoved Alelas mother towards him and before he could react, the
dagger he held was embedded deeply within her heart. The man ran off crying
that the bastard child slew his own mother and quite quickly the rest of the
already superstitious and prejudiced gypsies, quick to believe the tale,
gathered to kill Alelas.

The quick young half-drow was too nimble for them to catch, however, and he
ran off on his own. The young man wandered for many years, often nearly
starving and freezing to death. Most settlements wouldn't take him and to
this day the only place he is even remotely welcome is within the warriors
guild, where acceptance is gathered through actions alone, not race or
background. Skill came quite easily to Alelas, easily able to use his racial
abilities to great affect with weapons. Still, he was never accepted for more
than another warrior, as the other students did not associate with him in
work or in training. Work he did as well, slaying kobolds and other lesser
vermin to earn his way through life and the guild.

Through all these experiences only two things stuck in Alelas mind very
deeply. That of hate deeply rooted from his very conception to the ever
leering eyes of those who would judge him and from his hate comes the second,
that of the desire to become strong. Strength of will and skill in combat
would dictate how to direct his hate. He was smart and clever, not prone to
short temper, but even thoughtful hate that tempered his will in ice cold
