Chapter 1

The duergar patrol stumbled upon this dark-elven boy in the Underdark near
Aran'gird. Short, even for a dark-elf, they would have killed the runt save
for a few things. Firstly, he had a certain manic intensity in his eyes that
the duergar found intriguing. Secondly, the shadows around him, or so the
patrol claimed, bunched and gathered in an unnatural fashion. The duergar
claimed that the shadows had demonic eyes and that they could hear a growling
whenever they got close. And finally, he was laying in a pool of cavefisher
venom but, for some reason, was not dying.

This was the story they told the duergar Priestess when they brought him to
her. She gave him a mild dose of poison, and he showed symptoms by the
duergar swore that he had been laying in venom when they found him. She shone
lights all around him, but his shadows didn't appear unnatural. The only
thing that she could determine as true about him were his eyes, they were
manic, almost crazed, shining out from his face with their dark red
intensity. And the growling. The dark-elf growled, a lot.

They kept him there, and tried to raise him. They learned that he knew how to
talk. At times he made perfect sense, and even spoke with a certain elegance
and nobility. Other times he spoke with a glaring harshness and roughness to
his voice. Often, regardless of how he spoke though, he spoke in a way that
can only be described as crazy.

They never knew his name, so they simply called him Growler due to his
tendency to, well, growl. Over time, this transformed into his name: Gawlar.
In time, he was taken into the clan Freth'Aran, but he never really fit in
there. When he was of age he took what he had gleaned from his training with
the Freth'Aran priests, and ran back into the Underdark, in time, he found
his way to Hamsah Mu'tazz.
